Group 044's presentation discusses their plans for an opening scene for a social realism film project. The scene involves two muggers who rob a drug dealer, finding drugs instead of money. When the dealer learns his drugs were stolen, he shoots the dealer. The presentation provides details on the film genre, target audience, characters, locations, key scenes, mise-en-scene, institutional details, and editing techniques that will be used.

1. Group 044’s (Lee, Ellie, Louie and Carla) Presenta9on
For planning, we looked at different social realism films like
“Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Adulthood”.
Our film genre is social realism, so we can use the features
used in these films in our opening scene. The features are:
• Camera angles to show view of bystander.
• Story centered around crime.
• Story involves teenagers.
• Loca9on of story a poor area with a lot of crime.
• Involves the story of a good criminal and a bad criminal
against each other.

2. Our story
Our story begins with a long shot of the area the scene is set in. There
is a shot of two muggers walking down the street, talking that they
need to mug someone for money. The scene cuts to two drug
dealers preparing drugs in a house. The character is going to
deliver the drugs somewhere and the other drug dealer threatens
him if the drugs go missing. The character goes out of the house to
the street and starts walking, but he gets mugged by the two
muggers. The muggers run off, and the scene cuts to them looking
through the bag. Their shocked when they find drugs. The scene
cuts to the character talking to the other drug dealer, explaining to
him how he lost the drugs. The drug dealer shoots the character,
and the shot fades to the character lying on the floor. The scene
ends here.

3. Target Audience
For social realism films, teenagers are the target audience, so
therefore our target audience are also going to be teenagers.
We researched this by looking at professional films of the
same genre and to see the majority of their audience and to
see what the age group could understand the character’s
situa9on. Another research approach is a ques9onnaire that
we gave to members of the public to see which age group
liked social realism films the most.

4. Characters
The first character is the person who delivers the drugs, the
“good guy”. The “bad guy” is the drug dealer and maker and
two characters who mug the good guy. The audience will fell
aVracted to the good guy because he is doing this as he has
no choice, which makes him innocent. The audience will hate
the bad guy because he forces the good guy to do his dirty
work for him. The audience will also hate the muggers as they
are bea9ng up the good guy who has done nothing. We are
going to confirm the audience’s preconcep9ons as it will make
the characters and their situa9on easier for the audience to
understand if they know the characters well.

5. SeWngs and loca9ons
For our loca9on, we will use Reigate. This is typical for social
realism films as Reigate has some urban areas, like an social
housing estate, in it that will give the feel that this is everyday
life for some people in low income areas. The loca9on is also
prac9cal for us as it is easy for us to reach and it doesn’t take
much 9me to get to Reigate. An example below of the
loca9on that we’re looking for.

6. Key scenes and effects
Suspense will be created at the end of the opening scene when
the character will be shot and the audience will be leZ to
wonder whether he survives.
Ac9on will be created when the character gets mugged as the
pace will be fast when this ac9on takes place.
There is enigma around all the characters as we don’t know why
the two drug dealers are dealing drugs for or why the
muggers need to mug people.

7. Mise‐en‐scene
Costumes that we are going to use are hoodies and jeans
because this is commonly worn by the people who have this
lifestyle in real life, so therefore the audience can see who the
characters are meant to be.
Props – ladies handbag, powder (sugar/salt or flour) for drugs in
a clear plas9c bag
Ligh9ng/colour – dark seWng in the house, normal day light in
outside scenes (ideally cloudy, grey day).

9. Edi9ng Techniques
• Straight cuts for most transi9ons to keep it as realis9c as
possible (e.g. as in beginning of Lock Stock, ShiZy)
• No Special FX as they are not used very much in social realism
films
• Fade to black may be used at the end of the opening
sequence where character is about to get shot. This will let
the audience think about what has happened and what will
happen next. This will also avoid having to show the shoo9ng
which could be very difficult to do properly.
• Titles will be superimposed over the top of the film content.
