Question 1: In what ways does your
media product use, develop or challenge forms
And conventions of real media products?
Killer: The killer likes to be fast, and sneaky because he likes
to get away with murder. He gets thrilled by murdering
females, and covers up his face, so that nobody would be
able to stop him. Similar to the killer in “Halloween” played by
Michael Myers.

Victim: Our victim is a typical female teenage Blondie, who
likes to show off, party and have fun. She doesn’t know the
Consequences to her actions. Her behaviour and
characteristics are a popular target in horror movies.

Detectives: The detectives are tall, neatly presented like most
detectives in horror/crime movies. They are professional and
Serious about solving crime issues, and don’t mess about in
life or death situations. They also have a clear, and tidy
appearance.
Some typical Events Girl receives a text from
                                     Her mum saying that
                                     She is worried. Implying
Dumb blonde wakes That she might not make
Up on the bench where It home to her mother.
        Nobody is around,
        Forgetting where she last
        Was up to.

Girl sees the swings move, POV of killer watching
And hears a rattling in the The girl walk across
Bush and turns to see The bridge, getting ready
And listens to what it To kill her.
        Might be, feeling anxious.

          The girl’s body is
          Left there, after being
Brutally stabbed, Killer pops out from
We don’t actually Nowhere, the girl
Know if she’s alive, Screams really loud
Or dead 100%. Like And begins to run
“Club Dread” When he In the direction
Leaves her body That would allow her
There after killing her. With no way out.
Themes
In our film we base it around the typical horror and crime movie themes. We do this to make it
More recognisable and enjoyable for our horror and crime fans and target audience. Some of
The themes in our film, we want people to be able to relate to so that they can understand the
Meaning’s and ideologies within the film.

Iconography
Mise-en-scene: Bright and fashionable British teenage looking clothes for the Blonde female victim, which
are typical out-going teenage wear. Many female victims in horror movies have natural beauty, and are
Presented prettier to make the killing seem more shocking and dramatic. The killer’s usually always have
The darkest clothing, to contrast with the good, and so that the audience can recognise the character’s role.
The posh suits, and ties for the detectives are typical professional wear, and for crime movies. It makes
Them stand out, look upper class and allows older men to associate with them, and connect with them,
Especially business men, or real detectives.
Lighting: Most horror movies are set in the dark. We used natural lighting for all of our scenes, making them
Have a realistic looking setting. The lighting starts off with the yellow natural lighting from the street light,
Where the girl wakes up at night. This creates emotion for the audience and is effective. The lighting soon
Becomes a lot darker when the girl rushes into the dark forest where she can’t see where she is heading
Towards. We used the lighting from the computer in the killer’s house, to make it more realistic.
Setting:
Our film is set in more than one location. The first location is a forest next to a bridge with a river
Underneath it. We chose a forest because we were inspired by the film “Wrong turn” when there are a lot
Of jumpy scenes. A forest is a good location for a horror/crime movie, as a lot can happen there, and the
Emptiness of the forest at night can look very intimidating & scary. The forest at night, is a whole different
Atmosphere compared to the natural feeling it gives during the day. Forest’s are often very wide and open
With a lot of good hiding places for the killer. The killer is able to watch and follow the girl, without
Being seen, especially when hiding behind a tree or in a bush. The second location is the office, where
The detectives work. This is ideal especially to make them seem professional, with a very big important
Business, and finally our last location is the killer’s house. This is just a short scene, giving the audience some
Idea about the killer’s lifestyle, and what he does in his free time. This is all very dark and boyish like,
And the look of the killer’s room, tells a lot about what kind of person he is. Also the props in his room do too.
Narrative Structure
From my research most horror movies are structured in a way to scare the audience. They often
Go from “calm” scenes to straight away “frightening”. Our horror film is a classic narrative pattern for
Horror/crime movies. This is shown because the killer kills a victim, it then cuts away to the detectives
Searching for that victim, and then gradually finding clues. The protagonist(killer)
then goes towards his next victim,
And murders them too. The storyline ends until the villain has been found, and either taken away to prison,
Or possibly never gets caught. People in the town then keep going missing, and more death’s happen,
As more people start to get involved and help stop the crime from happening, to save lives. Like most
Horror/crime films, there is often a disruption which interrupts the killer’s circle of killing. Our storyline
Uses the 5 stages of equilibrium by Todorov’s theory, which makes our video more mainstream horror/crime
Some main steam horror examples using the similar storyline are: “Friday 13th”,”Halloween”,”Clubdread”.
“Scream", "The exorcist”.
Action codes: At the start, when the girl receives a text, and starts rushing home, the killer jumps out and
Charges at the girl but misses, and then follows her into the forest, the audience already know by this
Sudden action that the victim is most likely to get hurt or killed.
Enigma codes: We have many enigma’s in our opening sequence. The first one is why the girl wakes up on a
Bench? Then it’s how does the killer suddenly pop out in front of her when watching from further away?
And then the audience would question whether she ‘s dead or not. Then it’s where are the detectives off to?
Where will they go next, what will they find? the biggest enigma in our sequence is at the end, when the
Killer takes out the knife, and the audience don’t get to see what happens next, our idea to tease them.
Cross cutting: To separate each parts of the narrative, and the timing between daytime, and night time in
Our film, we cross cut between scenes. After the girl’s dead body is seen , it fades out into the credit,
And then goes onto the next scene. We used cross cutting so that it made sense that time was passing,
To cut out all the boring bits of action. We cross cut the facebook conversation just to get to the main
Elements of it, otherwise the shot would drag on.
Form & Style
Form:
-Introduces the main characters
-Has titles running through, producer, editors, sound creator like “Halloween”
-Only has one line of dialogue
-Starts off with a sound bridge of the train
-Our production company is introduced straight at the start.
-We used cross fade effects to show passing time.
-A lot happened in a short amount of time
-Introduced the main themes and ideologies
-Starts off with a lot of violence and blood, just like many horror films to get
The audience interested straight away.
Style: Soundtrack: like the Hit man sound track, goes well with the action, like it speeds up when the victim gradually gets
Closer and closer to the killer. Adds emotion, and tension to our whole opening. Engages the audience, making them feel tense. Our
Soundtrack rises gradually, like all kinds of horror movies.
Pace: A lot happens in our opening, a lot of action takes place, and the opening isn’t all just in one day, it’s passing time very quickly.
Getting the audience interested into the storyline and plot.
The use of POV shots of the killer, makes the audience feel as if they are looking through his eyes, and draws them into the film.
In the killer scene we edited using fast cuts, gradually building up tension and excitement until the killer finally pulls out his knife,
And the music begins to fade.
