2. The aim of this project was to find and explore the
connection of maths with the world of green car technology.
Today Group I will provide you with a tour of the areas of
mathematics involved and their use in Green car technology.
Some examples of the use of maths in Green car technology
is the use of angles while adjusting the rear view mirror of
the car to see or the use of surface area of the car roof and
find the number of solar panels used by dividing the surface
area of the roof with the area of
one solar panel. Today’s
presentation will help understand
that maths and our everyday life
is inextricably linked.

3. Bertrand Russell says ,“Mathematics takes us into the region
of absolute necessity, to which not only the actual word, but
every possible word, must conform.”
A green car or environmentally friendly car is a car that
produces less harmful impacts to the environment than
comparable conventional internal combustion engine cars.

4. Many people think Green Cars are very different from
cars using internal combustion engine. The Green car
we are discussing today is a PHEV(plug-in hybrid
electric vehicle), which shares the characteristics of
both a conventional hybrid electric vehicle, having
an electric motor and an internal combustion
engine (ICE) and of an all-electric vehicle, with
photovoltaic cells on the roof that are connected to the
battery . The addition of solar panels not only helps
utilize solar energy but also helps in reducing costs of
charging the rechargeable battery in the car. You will
find that most of the mathematical concepts
implying to this car will also imply to cars using
ICE.

6. • Mensuration can be defined as the geometry
applied to the computation of lengths, areas, or
volumes from given dimensions or angles or
the act of measuring or the branch of geometry
dealing with measurement of length, area, or
volume

7. • Mensuration plays an important role in Green cars as it help in
determining the number of solar panels through the formula given
below.
• Number of solar panels = Area of roof
Area of one solar panel
• Mensuration is used in the building of the car and play a very important
role in the making of a blueprint/diagram of the car and is used for
measuring the components of the car and ensuring that all the
components such as the engine etc, fit in the car comfortably and
perfectly, in order for the proper functioning of the car.

8. • Statistics is the study of the collection, organization,
analysis, interpretation and presentation of data
especially for the purpose of inferring proportions in
a whole from those in a representative sample.
Methods of data collection include bar graphs, pie
charts etc.

9. • Pie charts show the relationship between a whole and
its parts. Here the whole circle is divided into sectors.
The size of each is proportional to the activity or
information it represents. Pie charts are very widely
used in the business world and the mass media.

12. • A bar chart or bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with
lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The
bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. A vertical bar
chart is sometimes called a column bar chart.
• Categorical data is a grouping of data into discrete groups,
such as months of the year, age group, shoe sizes, and
animals. These categories are usually qualitative.

15. • The term shape is commonly used to refer to the
geometric properties of an object or its external
boundary (outline, external surface). A shape may be
defined as a collection of two or more points, a line ,
a curve, a plane, a plane figure (e.g. square or circle), or a
solid figure (e.g.cube or sphere).

Windshield and windows of a car
Number plate of a car and its mudflap

17. • The angle measures the amount of turn between the two arms
with a common point of intersection (vertex) and is measured in
degrees. Angles that are exactly 90 degrees are called right
angles. Angles less than 90 degrees are called as acute angles.
Angles that are exactly 180 degrees is called as straight angle.
Angles less than 180 degrees yet greater than 90 degrees are
called as obtuse angles. Angles more than 180 degrees and less
than 360 degrees are called reflex angles.

18. • While inspecting or even during the manufacturing
of the car, it is important to see the car from
different perspectives to point our the flaws and
inspect the design of different parts of the car.
Without realizing it, we are actually using angles to
look at the car from different perspectives.

19. • We even use angles while adjusting the mirror. We
adjust the rear view mirror in such a way that we
are able to see the cars behind and therefore,
unknowingly use the mathematical concept of
angles to adjust the rear view mirror or any other
mirror in the car.

20. • Another use of angles in green cars is during the
manufacturing of the car. During the manufacturing
the solar panels are fit on the roof in such a way that
the angles between the panels and the sun is such
that the panels can receive maximum light intensity
for maximum power generation.
