Smart was a joint project between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz to create small, ecological cars for urban use. Introduced in 1998, the Smart City Coupe was just 2.5 meters long and used recycled plastic body panels, powder painted steel that was less harmful than conventional paint, and ran without oil using electricity instead. Though costing between $100,000-$120,000, the Smart aimed to be a sustainable transportation option for cities.
