What is a Group?
ā€¢ A group, in the context of organizational communication, is defined as a
collection of individuals who interact with each other, accept expectations and
obligations as members of the group and share a common identity.
What is a Discussion?
ā€¢ A discussion is understood as an activity of sitting and talking about a specific
subject. The word ā€˜discussā€™ has been derived from the Latin word ā€˜discutereā€™,
which means to shake or strike. Thus ā€˜discussionā€™ refers to thoroughly shaking
up the subject, that is, examining it thoroughly to reach a conclusion.
What is a Group Discussion?
Group discussions are a very important aspect of group
communication. Group discussions are a creative and dynamic activity
which stimulates reflective thinking among the members
Definition of Group Discussion:
ā€œGroup Discussion is a modern method of assessing students personality. It
is both a technique and an art and a comprehensive tool to judge the
worthiness of the student and his appropriateness for the jobā€.
ļƒ¼ The term suggests that a discussion among a group of persons.
ļƒ¼ The group will have 8 & 12 members who will express their views freely,
frankly in a friendly manner, on a topic of current issue.
ļƒ¼ Within a time limit of 20 to 30 minutes, the abilities of the members of the
group is measured.
Prerequisites of a Group Discussion:
ā€¢ Topics given by panelists
ā€¢ Planning and preparation
ā€¢ Knowledge with self-confidence
ā€¢ Communication skills/power of speech
ā€¢ Body Language and personal appearance
ā€¢ Being calm and cool
ā€¢ Extensive knowledge base related to state, country and globe.
ā€¢ Areas are politics, sports, science & trade, commerce, Industry and
Technology, MNC, etc
ā€¢ Listening skills
ā€¢ Co-operation
Purpose of Group Discussions:
ļƒ¼ To reach a solution on an issue of concern.
ļƒ¼ To generate new ideas or new approaches to solving a problem.
ļƒ¼ For selecting candidates after the written test for employment or for
admission to educational institutes.
ļƒ¼ To provide us with an avenue to train ourselves in various interpersonal
skills.

ā€¢ Understanding of your strength and weakness.
ā€¢ Your true personality is revealed and qualities of leadership.

ā€¢ Topic may be given to judge your public speaking talent.
ā€¢ Discussion revolves around a specific subject.
ā€¢ The examiner does not interfere once he announced the topic.
ā€¢ Maintain cordiality and free expression of thought and opinion.
Do`s in group discussion:
ā€¢ Appropriate to the issue .
ā€¢ Make original points & support them by substantial reasoning .
ā€¢ Listen to the other participants actively &carefully.
ā€¢ Whatever you say must be with a logical flow & validate it with an example as
far as possible.
ā€¢ Make only accurate statements.

ā€¢ Be considerate to the feelings of the others.
ā€¢ Try to get your turn.
ā€¢ Be an active and dynamic participant by listening.
ā€¢ Talk with confidence and self-assurance.
Donā€™ts during group discussion:
ā€¢ Being shy /nervous / keeping isolated from G.D.
ā€¢ Interrupting another participant before his arguments are over.
ā€¢ Speak in favour; example: Establish your position and stand by it stubbornly.
ā€¢ Changed opinions.
ā€¢ Donā€™t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny.
ā€¢ Donā€™t engage yourself in sub-group conversation.
ā€¢ Donā€™t repeat and use irrelevant materials.
ā€¢ Addressing yourself to the examiner.
ā€¢ Worrying about making some grammatical mistakes, for your interest the
matter you put across are important.

ā€¢ Be assertive: An assertive person is direct, honest careful about not hurting
others ā€˜self-respectā€™.
ā€¢ Be a patient listener: listening to another person is one way of showing
appreciation.
ā€¢ Right language: Words can make friends & right words at the right time make
the best results.
ā€¢ Be analytical and fact-oriented: It is necessary to make relevant points which
can be supported with facts and analyzed logically.

ā€¢ Never try to bluff.
ā€¢ Practice group discussion with friends on different subjects.
ā€¢ Remember speech is a powerful weapon.

What is a Group? ā€¢ A group, in the context of organizational communication, is defined as a collection of individuals who interact with each other, accept expectations and obligations as members of the group and share a common identity. What is a Discussion? ā€¢ A discussion is understood as an activity of sitting and talking about a specific subject. The word ā€˜discussā€™ has been derived from the Latin word ā€˜discutereā€™, which means to shake or strike. Thus ā€˜discussionā€™ refers to thoroughly shaking up the subject, that is, examining it thoroughly to reach a conclusion.
  • 6. What is a Group Discussion? Group discussions are a very important aspect of group communication. Group discussions are a creative and dynamic activity which stimulates reflective thinking among the members Definition of Group Discussion: ā€œGroup Discussion is a modern method of assessing students personality. It is both a technique and an art and a comprehensive tool to judge the worthiness of the student and his appropriateness for the jobā€. ļƒ¼ The term suggests that a discussion among a group of persons. ļƒ¼ The group will have 8 & 12 members who will express their views freely, frankly in a friendly manner, on a topic of current issue. ļƒ¼ Within a time limit of 20 to 30 minutes, the abilities of the members of the group is measured.

Purpose of Group Discussions: ļƒ¼ To reach a solution on an issue of concern. ļƒ¼ To generate new ideas or new approaches to solving a problem. ļƒ¼ For selecting candidates after the written test for employment or for admission to educational institutes. ļƒ¼ To provide us with an avenue to train ourselves in various interpersonal skills.

Donā€™ts during group discussion: ā€¢ Being shy /nervous / keeping isolated from G.D. ā€¢ Interrupting another participant before his arguments are over. ā€¢ Speak in favour; example: Establish your position and stand by it stubbornly. ā€¢ Changed opinions. ā€¢ Donā€™t make fun of any participant even if his arguments are funny. ā€¢ Donā€™t engage yourself in sub-group conversation. ā€¢ Donā€™t repeat and use irrelevant materials. ā€¢ Addressing yourself to the examiner. ā€¢ Worrying about making some grammatical mistakes, for your interest the matter you put across are important.

Important points in group discussion: ā€¢ Be assertive: An assertive person is direct, honest careful about not hurting others ā€˜self-respectā€™. ā€¢ Be a patient listener: listening to another person is one way of showing appreciation. ā€¢ Right language: Words can make friends & right words at the right time make the best results. ā€¢ Be analytical and fact-oriented: It is necessary to make relevant points which can be supported with facts and analyzed logically.
