Wendell Johnson devised the Monster study in 1939 at the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans Home in
Dayton, Iowa to find the true cause of stuttering, which he and many others suffered from
(Reynolds, 2003). The popular theory at the time was that stuttering was a physiological defect,
meaning the brain s signals misfired; however, Johnson believed that stuttering was a learned
behavior and could be unlearned (Reynolds, 2003, n.pag). To see if his hypothesis was correct,
Johnson devised an experiment now known as the Monster Study. Before he could begin he
requested the help of one of his students at the time, Mary Tudor, to carry out the experiment for
him. Before the experiment Tudor and 5 other graduate students ranked twenty six children s
speech on a scale of one to five, one being poor and five being fluent (Reynolds, 2003, n.pag).
Based on this the children were separated into four groups: IA consisted of five children who
stuttered, but were told nice things; IB consisted of five children who stuttered and were told
negative things; IIA consisted of six children who did not stutter but, were told they did, and,

International Typographic Style Essay
The focus of this essay is to explain why the International Typographic Style or Swiss style was so
important to the mid twentieth century and how it got started. Firstly, it is an art movement that
internationally began in the 1950 s, but the origins can be traced back at least thirty years. It can be
thought of as a combination of elements from other movements such as Constructivism, De Stijland
the Bauhaus. According to Richard Hollis book Swiss Graphic Design, there are at least three
factors that account for the Swiss style (Hollis, R. 2006, P9), these being the country s location,
the language and the culture. There is evidence to prove that there are at least 2 other factors,
especially for the origin of the style, which is shown in the book, along with several others.
Although not directly linked to the foundation of the style itself, these 2 other factors include the
designers and the typography, after all, it is known as the International Typographic Style. In this
essay we will be discussing each of them in turn, and explaining views as to why they were
important and what effect they had on graphic design in the mid twentieth century.

Some studies have shown that preservice teachers and in service elementary teachers have
knowledge gaps in their mathematics content and pedagogical content knowledge (e.g., Ball, 1990;
Ma, 1999). The knowledge that teachers have for teaching influence their instruction and the lack of
such can limit how they teach mathematics for understanding (Borko Putnam, 1996). For this
reason, teacher preparation programs and professional development forums should emphasize and
provide the opportunities for learning to teach mathematics for conceptual understanding. Not only
do such opportunities build on preservice teachers mathematics content knowledge, but they also
introduce them to the new ways of teaching mathematics that they may not have experienced in
their earlier mathematics learning.
The findings from this study suggest that frequent experiences in learning mathematics for
conceptual understanding through particular strategies is related to an increase in PSTs knowledge
about teaching mathematics. In particular, more opportunities that allow PSTs to learn to show
why a procedure works was significantly related to the average PSTs increase in content knowledge

For humans to go faster than they have ever gone before they had to research many different
things spend both money and time to finally reach this goal and this paper will take you through
that process of research done for that goal to be reached. With the possibility of faster flight
people will always want to see how fast they can push the aircraft they design. The development
and research that went into the aircrafts that helped break the sound barrier, took a long time and
many people co operation. But after many years of research and testing with several different
types of aircrafts they were able to succeed in producing an aircraft that could surpass the sound
barrier and bring us into a new era of flight. The ideas on how to get an aircraft up to the speed
and the designs of many researcher had to come together in order for this feat to be accomplished.

In the book, Nickel and Dimed, Barbara Ehrenreich leaves behind her lifestyle as a journalist for
one of a low wage worker. As we follow Ehrenreich on her journey, we are exposed to the
struggles the working poor have to face as Ehrenreich attempts to survive on a minimum wage pay.
In hopes of changing the way readers perceive its working poor, Ehrenreich uses rhetorical
strategies conveyed throughout the book, in particular, ethos, logos, and pathos.
Ehrenreich uses the rhetorical strategy, ethos, to effectively support her argument in her novel.
