Adverb clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions like when, where, why, how, before, after, since, until, while, whenever, wherever, as, because, although. Punctuation use depends on whether the adverb clause comes before or after the main clause. Common types of adverb clauses include those expressing cause and effect, contrast, condition, concession, and time.

18. Using Only If: Expresses the idea that there is only one condition that will cause a particular result. Examples: The picnic will be canceled only if it rains. Only if it rains will the picnic be canceled.
