Hunger in Ethiopia Essay
How would you feel if your body slowly turns on you, devouring the cells that make up your very
being? What would you do if you were so weak that you couldn t even hold a loved one in your arms?
How would you feel if you couldn t think straight because the pain of hunger was so intense? What
would you do..? Starvation results in a series of devastating events that can ultimately lead to death.
When a person eats, the body extracts needed nutrients for cellular maintenance and repair. This
requires energy which is provided for by the metabolism of the food. If we consume more than what is
required at that time, our body stores the excess as adipose tissue or fat. This fat serves as a reserve of
potential energy in times of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The location and geography of the country has caused the people to experience famine after famine,
leaving many to die from starvation. A famine is in definition, A great shortage or an extreme scarcity
of food over an extended period of time (Webster). There are several different types of famine that
occur in different types of the world. The type that Ethiopia generally goes through is called a
Ravallion. During a Ravallion famine, there are unusually large amounts of causalities with extreme
shortages of food in certain parts of the population. There are many things that cause famine, whether
it s draught, plague, or civil disrupt. Right now, Ethiopia is experiencing a draught that has killed
almost all of their crops. Because of the famines that Ethiopia experiences most every year, there is
usually an increase in the amount of people malnourished. This year, 11to 14 million people are
expected to go hungry leaving many to starve to death. Ethiopia has experienced many draughts like
these, the worst however, being in 1983. This draught lasted two years and the draught alone killed
over 400,000 people in one year, this doesn t include the deaths that were due to starvation
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983%E2%80%931985_famine_in_Ethiopia). Another factor that causes
starvation in Ethiopia is its economy. Ethiopia is in and has always been in a very poor economic
state. Crops account for 41% of the country s GDP however; the

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities and Hyperpolarizability of Borate LiNaB4O7 Single
Crystals: Theory and Experiment

Volume 112, Issue 5, Pages 053526 (1 11)
Since the successful demonstration of second harmonic generation by a propagation of a ruby laser
beam via a quartz crystal by Franken et al,1 borate materials have been widely studied to employ in
the potential applications such as nonlinear optics (NLO) and laser (mainly in visible and UV light)
engineering.2, 3, 4, 5 Materials with NLO properties are useful for generating new frequency laser
sources that cannot be directly produced from the common laser sources.2 Consequently, NLO
materials have enabled a wider range of frequencies produced from the available laser. Borate
materials have a few great properties, for example, short growth period, high damage threshold, large
effective nonlinear coefficient and good mechanical properties.6 This suggests that borate materials
are well fitted for the purpose of laser frequency conversion. BaB2O4, LiB3O5, CsB3O5 and
YCa4(BO3)3O are examples of well known borate based NLO crystals.2 An early review on the
comparison of the damage threshold and optical transmittance of these mentioned borate crystal
compounds have been done by Becker in which the use of the favourable anionic group and
birefringence in the borate materials are the essential features needed to produce

Marxist Criticism In David Fincher s Fight Club
Fight Club is the kind of movie that you would expect to stay on screen. But it doesn t. Many parts of
fight club are actually part of Marxism, a system of thought developed by Karl Marx. Certain scenes
connect strongly with Marxism, albeit imperfectly. In Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, the
Marxist thought of excess being a sin is portrayed through Jack s two locations of residence, Jack s
initial defense of his possessions, and the scene of Jack and Tyler making soap from human fat. Jack
initially lives a very average life. His job and life is so average that anybody can relate to him. His
apartment is decorated almost exclusively with items from the Ikea catalogue. He tells us that he has
given in to the ...Ikea nesting instinct. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He stole human fat and used it to make soap and sell it to department stores for twenty dollars per bar.
The narrator sees irony in this profit: We were selling rich women their own fat asses back to them .
This clever scheme presents the fraudulent nature of a consumer society. Often, consumers are
convinced they are buying something different than the object; they unconsciously seek to purchase
their ideal selves Even though liposuction merely changes appearance, it is solely artificial. Soap
represents the artificiality of society and its ability to wash away humanity. Consumers become so
engrossed with the spectacle of commodities that they lose their humanity, trading it for possessions.
The soap made by the Paper Street Soap Company is made of the excess of the bourgeoisie. Marla
asks to store a bag of fat in his freezer because she wanted a collagen trust fund: The best kind of
collagen is your own fat, sucked out of your thighs, processed and cleaned and injected back into your
lips. This stuff in the fridge at home, it was Marla s collagen trust fund. The fat comes from her
mother, someone who can afford to do this. Only a member of the bourgeoisie would engage in such
an activity, because only a member of the bourgeoisie would afford to be able to do so. Tyler/the
narrator scavenge through medical waste dumps to find more bags of human fat which they can turn
into soap. The creation of the soap is made from the excess of the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie in this
aspect is reabsorbing their own excess and practicing excess at the same time, by paying twenty
dollars for soap. In turn, he sells the soap to Nordstrom s at twenty dollars per bar, an exorbitant price
for something so basic that only a member of the bourgeoisie could afford to pay. To make matters
more ironic, customers say that it is the best soap

Sustainable Design Versus Aesthetic Design
Design is that area of human experience, where skill and knowledge is concerned with man s ability to
mould the environment according to his material and spiritual needs. It is used to analyse and identify
problems to find an appropriate solution. Designers have created all kind of functional designs to help
improve people s lives. They were interested in the nature of beauty, art, and taste and with the
creation and appreciation of beauty. Although there are examples of pre historic art, they are rare and
the guidelines that they followed are not so clear, Thus the aesthetic doctrines that guided their
production and interpretation one mostly unknown. However, recently designer notice what happing
to the world such as global worming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, these cultural aesthetic merits have been undermined by very restricted pro environmental
guidelines (Donald et al, 2008) such as, The Design Accord. As a result, modern architecture has lost
the engagement with the local cultural identity and the sense of creativity has been reduced (Donald et
al, 2008). Where experimenting and exploiting the plant resources will result in a better world than
trying to protect the environment (Donald et al, 2008). A good architecture does not need any ethical
diminution and responsibility regarding the environment and just design for the design sake (Donald
et al, 2008).
What they both fails to consider is that the aesthetic value and the environment value, if they are used
together it will benefit the design. Good design should have the flexibility, creativity and responsible
design approaches and methods, and also good communication (Wolf 2010). According to Meyer
(2008) the aesthetic value could increase the functionality of a particular the design. He also states that
In designing urban eras parks consider as aesthetic value, but it also has an important effect on the
environment in two ways: they are environment cleaning machines and shady groves of trees reducing
temperatures, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.

Ethnic Conflicts in Nigeria
The military elites made the situation even worse by staging coups and making a mockery of
democracy in Nigeria. The military era was marked by corruption, ineptitude and confusion. It drove
Nigeria into many problems including economic problems, poverty, and ethno religious conflicts until
the 1990s. The military continued intervening because they believed the civilian leaders were inept
and indecisive.
Ethnic conflicts continued to escalate through the democratic transition in Nigeria, as various ethnic
groups demanded political restructuring. The federal structure has developed deep cracks and
demands urgent action to fix it. What is most worrisome in Nigeria is the religious dimension of ethnic
conflict and competition for power and oil wealth. The numerous ethno religious conflicts that the
northern cities of Kaduna, Kano, Jos and Zamfara have witnessed, came about from the introduction
of Muslim Sharia courts, in addition to the South s demands for autonomy. The continuing conflict is a
sign Nigeria s lack of effective mechanisms to manage ethnic conflicts.
The intense ethnic conflicts that rocked Nigeria and South Africa have pushed them to develop
constitutionally backed institutions for conflict management. In South Africa, the state has prevented
further conflicts by developing multiple democratic approaches to create a foundation for peace and
security. The new constitution crafted an impressive document aimed to heal the wounds of the past
and to build a

The Fate Of The White Elephant
The Fate of The White Elephant (Draft)
The short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway is an argument between the man
and a woman about abortion. It shows how an unexpected white elephant can affect their relationship,
force them to bring life changing decisions, and present a threat to their self identity. Besides the main
argument, the author through the scenery and the dialog are presenting other conflicts and arguments.
Some of them are the nonverbal communication, what choices they have, and the couple s future. The
author of the story, Ernest Hemingway, was born in 1861 in the Chicago suburbs. In his life, he
traveled to different places in the world, and he was married four times. During the Spanish Civil War,

Although it seems simple, the story carries a couple of parallel explanations about the situation.
Hemingway has never mentioned the word in his story, but the main topic of conversation between the
couple is abortion. First of all, the story shows the balance of power of the man and the woman in the
relationship. After finding that Jig is pregnant, the man is trying to talk her into having an awfully
simple operation . (Hemingway) When it comes to power in the relationship, at first the man is trying
to be dominant. He does not show any interest in the woman s health, and he is insensitive to Jig s
needs. Hemingway in the story represents the American as a man who wants his woman to serve
solely as the source of his sexual pleasure, who denies her the motherhood that she desires. (Holder).
However, soon after, he receives a rejection from Jig. I know we will. You don t have to be afraid. I ve
known lots of people that have done it. So have I. And afterwards they were all so happy.
(Hemingway) . The woman is trying to tell the man that she does not want to end up regretting this
decision that can ruin her life. She is trying to stop the man of talking nonsense and that she knows
about the effects of such procedure. In the next dialog Hemingway is defining the pregnancy by using
the hills and the white elephants to describe the relationship:
The girl was looking off at the line of hills.

Biography of Thomas A. Becket
A Saracen princess followed a wealthy crusader from the Holy Land to London. In 1118 Thomas
Becket was born on St. Thomas day. Thomas Becket came from a loving family and was very
educated. Thomas Becket attended the canons regular a Merton Priority in Sussex, and then attended
the University of Paris. When Becket returned home from college his parents had passed away.
Thomas Becket was then urged to make his way through life with no aid from anyone and a better
future. Anyone that knows Thomas Becket knows him as a strongly built and very spirited young man.
Becket also loved to play field sports which he spent most of his spare time hawking and hunting. At
the age of twenty four Thomas Becket was given a post in the house hold Theobald, archbishop of
Canterbury. While working there Thomas took minor orders he resolved on a career in the church. For
further learning Becket received permission to study canon law at the University of Bologna, then

Analysis Of The Book Crossing The Wire
Hispanics, mostly Mexicans, are not being treated equally because of their different culture and
lifestyle and people need to treat them fairly and enforce laws against discrimination. In the book,
Crossing the Wire, Hobbs displays what a Mexican has to go through when they are crossing the
border to the United States for a good cause. Hispanics have been discriminated ever since the
Mexicans gained independence in 1821 from Spain. In recent years African Americans have been
receiving the most attention in America because of so much racial discrimination, but they are not the
only big race being discriminated. Mexicans are getting just as much hate. This problem is going to
continue because the Mexican population in the United States is rapidly growing. Humans need to
figure out a solution to stop this hatred, so all races can unite with each other. If we unite we can try to
agree with each other on things and make the earth a better place to live. Ever since the 1900s, there
has been a large number of Mexicans immigrating illegally and legally into the United States. During
this time, Mexicans mostly lived in the southwestern part of America, where most schools in the area
were segregated, job opportunities were limited, public facilities were limited to Mexican Americans
and housing was in poor quality. For example, in California, public swimming pools were open only
one day a week for Mexican Americans (Daniels). In 1993 the National School Boards Association

The Significance Of A Rose In The War Of The Roses
Q: Who was in the war and why was it started?
A: The war of the roses was fought between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. These two
houses were royal family descending from the head family of England. When king Henry the 6th
suddenly fell ill to his first of many insanity spells Richard from the House of York believed that he
had the right to temporarily take over since he was the great grand son of king Edward the third.
Except Queen Margaret had already given birth to the kings first son, his name was Edward of
Lancaster. This made Richards claim to the throne a lot weaker since Edward was a direct descendant
of the current king. The york s eventually marched against Henry and took him hostage Queen and his
son to go into exile. The queen worked to rescue her husband and restore her sons place as the rightful
king of England (Wars of the Roses British History).
2. Q: What is the significance of a rose in this war and why is it called war of the roses?
A: The significance of a rose in this was was that it was one of many symbols used by each house.
Although this wasn t there only symbol the York s had a white rose as one of there symbols. The
Lancaster s adopted the red rose as a symbol in the 1480 s, this was more towards the end of the war
so there s no real significance of a rose in this war. The war was actually called the cousins war until
the 19th century when it was changed to the war of the roses (Andrews).

Importance Of Safety In Sports
The Importance of Sports Safety
Sports can be a very dngerous game depending on how you play the sport. You can be to aggressive in
the NFL and serously hurt someone despite the gear you wear. You can be a MLB pitcher and mess up
on a pitch and hurt a player by throwing a pitch at a player s head. You have to be very careful how
you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competive and fun, but you have to
remember to be safe and care for the other competiors you are competing against. Sports safety is a
big deal, and is very important in all sports types. Like in the NFL, there are rules to help players stay
safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a
concussion. A concussion is a temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. When a NFL
player takes a hit to the head, for example getting tackled, that player who took the blow to the head
immediately gets taken off the field and is given a thorough evaluation by a doctor that all NFL teams
have present with them at games. That player could be having a fantastic game, but if the doctor has
come to the conclusion that the player may have a concussion, that player will not be able to play the
remainder of the game for the players safety. A concussion can become a danger to the brain of the
player if the player went out and took another hit to the head. These rules from the NFL are set for a
reason so that the player does not get a serious injury.

Restless Giant Chapter Summary
Kiana Wade Book Review 6 Nov 2105 Restless Giant, a book written by James T. Patterson, provides
us with a concise and historically correct assessment of the time period of the twenty seven years
between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush. Patterson makes it a
point to provide for us the relational ties between the social, economical, cultural, political aspects of
life in America. Patterson begins his narrative by placing us in the troubled 70s. He describes the
1970s as grim, tasteless years that are best put out of mind. (p. 13) The mood of the 1970s was
described as gloomy, gaudy and depressing. The issue of race remained the nation s number one
problem. During this time there were only two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
18) Along with the many racial problems of this time period, there were educational issues, drug abuse
problems and rising crime rate. Patterson also talks about the moral decline and the younger
generation. He notes that, a number of public school seemed out of control, (p. 45) doing things such
as swearing in the classrooms and on the streets, spray painting buildings and using drugs and alcohol.
Then there was the topic of sex. It seemed to be advancing in the culture almost as rapidly as violence,
says Patterson. Their was a decline in sexual morality. The sexual themes on TV seemed to be
advancing. Patterson gives us some examples: Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie s Angels.
Television shows likes these reflected a sexualizing of the culture. (p.46) Patterson later talks about
the rapid rise in divorce rates and the increase of number of births happening outside of marriage.
During this time agitation for women s rights were at an all time high. Many women began to work
and speak out against sexual discrimination. All these controversies over sex and family life would
have been cause enough for concern even in sunny economic times. (p. 58) Patterson goes on to
discuss the economic problems of this period. The stagflation persisted into the 1980s. This was a
result of the structural changes in the economy. It went from a manufacturing base to a post industrial
society that depended on services. Greater

Social Injustice In Hidden Intellectualism By Colin...
There is no question that American culture has evolved over the years. Many citizens have become far
more liberal than others, but it has become widely apparent that strong cultural differences are still a
point of debate. The idea is that every citizen possesses the same equal rights, yet in Colin Kaepernick
and the question of who gets to be called a Patriot , Wesley Morris portrays how Kaepernick calls
attention to social injustice in a televised national sport. In addition, in Hidden Intellectualism Gerald
Graff demonstrates a lack of guidance that enhances new ideas provided by the educational systems in
the nation, by focusing solely on purely academic issues. Both argue the insufficiency of schooling
and widespread social inequality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Basic Building Blocks
1. What are proteins composed of (ie basic building blocks)?
Amino acids are the smaller building blocks which protein is made of. There are 20 different amino
acids. Depending on length, sequence of amino acids and function; each protein has unique different
from each other. These amino acids have unique 3D shapes by fold up in complex ways.
2. List the amino acids and diagram their organic structure (C N bonds).
The 20 different amino acids are alanine, arginine, asparagines, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid,
glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, serine,
threonine, tryptophan, tyrosine, and valine.
Amino acids are mainly composed of an amine ( NH2), a carboxylic acid ( COOH), an atom of
hydrogen ( H) and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So in conclusion, when the pH is larger than the isoelectric point, protein has a net negative charge
and when the pH is lesser than the isoelectric point, protein has a net positive charge.
4. What are the basic secondary structures of proteins and how do they form?
The two main basic secondary structures are the alpha helix and the beta sheet. The alpha helix
secondary structure of the protein coils because of the hydrogen bonds between the backbones of their
amino acids. The backbone of the amino acid is the peptide bonds. So because of the hydrogen bonds
forming between the amine nitrogens and the carbonyl oxygens in different amino acids the protein
has become a helix shape.
The beta sheet or the beta pleated sheet is designed from the hydrogen bonds between the carbonyl
oxygens in one strand binding with the amino hydrogens of the adjacent strand.
5. What are some common protein motifs or domains? Describe three of

Examples Of Dark Humor In Slaughterhouse Five
Slaughterhouse Five (1969) is Kurt Vonnegut s book on what he feels is one of the most important
events in his entire life: the bombing of Dresden. Though throughout history many refer to this action
taken by the U.S. Army as a successful mission to fight against the Germans n WWII, but Vonnegut
sees this as a massacre killing thousands of innocent people for the sake of war. He even states And
what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, things like poo tee weet? (24 Vonnegut Jr,)
which shows the ineffable concept of the bombing. Its not the bombing of Dresden alone that led to
the creation of slaughterhouse five Vonnegut also loved comedy and dark humor is one of the aspects

The placement of jokes and humorous events in a novel with such dark subject matter allows for the

a sniper misses Billy s head and he stands still to give him a second shot Get out of the road you dumb

How Does Pip s Name Change Throughout The Novel
In Great Expectations, symbolic and frequently changing names are carried throughout the novel. Pip
s name, for instance, translates to seed which has symbolic meaning. Specifically, at beginning of the
novel he was a naive adolescent with no knowledge of the world outside the forge. However as the
book progresses, so does Pip as he learns vital lessons that allow him to grow up into an educated and
experienced adult. The same goes for a seed; it starts out as a little seedling and as it ages, it flourishes
into a beautiful plant. Pip s name also changes through the book in which his name becomes Handle .
This affection sobriquet that Herbert coins for Pip, represents his new luxurious life in London
(Forker). It shows how Pip wanted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pip and Herbert meet at Miss. Havisham s garden, where he challenges Pip to a fight. When him and
Pip are reunited in London, they become the best of friends where Herbert is there for Pip through his
transition to a gentleman (Dickens). The symbolic meaning behind this that as Pip grows a closer bond
with Herbert he learns his name. Dickens does this with several characters as Pip forms a bond with
several charterers their names are revealed. The opposite is also present in the novel in which some
character names are never revealed such as Pip s sister. We never learn her first name and is always
called Miss. Joe (Dickens). This symbolizes a yearning to escape not only his abusive sister but his
previous neglected life as well. Whether he chooses to not include their names or he chooses to have a
relationship with certain characters and ultimately learn their names, it shows how Pip grows as a
person throughout the book. In the beginning of the novel, he is young pip as he has much to learn in
regards to the real world. As he gets older he is able to mature and understand the real meaning of
relationships. This turning point is located when he is kidnapped by Orlick as he understands life is
not about money and luxury, but love and

An Open Message On All E Mail Users
An open message to all e mail users:
In recent weeks you may have received a slightly greater than usual number of e mails purporting to
be invoices or collection notices from a wide variety of sources. Despite our utilization of state of the
art e mail filtering mechanisms, it is inevitable that a certain number of these messages will still get
through. Ill willed entities (with various motivations) are continuously attempting to obviate whatever
protective mechanisms are placed in their way.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind all e mail users of the following advice:
If a message appears to come from an unexpected source, an entity you have never dealt with, or to
which you have never given your business e mail address, you should immediately be at least
somewhat suspicious of its authenticity.
If a message makes claims regarding a business connection or account which does not exist, you
should also be suspicious. Such messages almost never come from a legitimate business that is merely
mistaken about these sorts of things. They are almost always fake.
If the sender s purported address does not match the purported sender s business name, be very
suspicious. For instance, if a message appears to be a collection notice from American Express, but the
sender s e mail address appears as poubelle2167@reparationdevelosdesttropez.fr, you should
immediately be suspicious. Do look carefully, though, as a sender will sometimes use a clever, but not

The Red Pyramid Cultural Differences
Egyptian culture is quite different from mine; on the other hand, there are some similarities between
the two. The book which I am comparing and contrasting is The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan. This
fiction book is about two kids that are my age named Carter and Sadie. The want to live a normal life
but their Egyptian ancestry makes it a little difficult. They Learn that their ancestors were pharaohs,
and they have royal blood. They have to go on a journey to defeat the god of chaos. They must learn
about Egyptian culture and some magic! Throughout this essay I am going to go through various
topics and aspects dealing with the two cultures and comparing and contrasting them. In my opinion
the biggest differences between the Egyptian and my culture is probably religion. First off Sadie and
Carter are polytheistic. This means they believe in more than on god. I on the other hand an
monotheistic. I am catholic so I believe in one god. I believe that god created everything on his own.
The Egyptian mythology explanation for the world is So the sky goddess Nut was married to the earth
god Geb...Geb and Nut wanted to have kids, but the kind of gods, Ra He was the sun god and he
forbade a child to be born on any day or night of the year... (Riordan, 101). She ended up having five
kids who all became gods. In my religion I believe that God one day one, God created heaven and
earth, day two he created the sky and sea, day three God created land and vegetation, day four, the

Relationship Between Orthodontic And Periodontics
The term synergy refers to two or more agents acting together to create an effect greater than that
predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents. This definition is applicable to
the classic relationship between orthodontic and periodontics specialties in treating patients.1
An Interdisciplinary approach is often necessary to treat complex dental problems in our patients and
the example is ortho perio inter relation. A desire to improve dentofacial appearance has been found to
be the primary motivating factor for seeking treatment in adults.
Plaque is a major etiologic factor in the development of periodontal disease.
Results from past animal studies done in dentitions with reduced periodontium showed that in the
absence of plaque, orthodontic forces and tooth movements do not induce gingivitis. The orthodontic
bands, brackets and wires compromises the self cleansing property of the dentition which further
contribute to the development of gingival inflammation. Gingivitis and gingival over growth appear to
be the main short term effects of orthodontic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In adult patients, the loss of teeth or periodontal support can result in pathological migration of teeth
involving either a single tooth or a group of teeth. This may result in the development of a midline
diastema or spacing between the teeth with or without incisal proclination, rotation or tipping of
bicuspids and molars with the collapse of the posterior occlusion and decreasing vertical dimension.
Orthodontic treatment either helps to correct these problems, or it helps to prevent them from
progressing further. The main reasons cited to justify the provision of orthodontic treatment are
improvement of facial and dental aesthetics with dental health and function. However, association
between malocclusions and periodontal condition is still

During that period he carved several prophets for the Florentine Campanile, including the Zuccone
(Baldhead), a vibrant characterization. In 1430 32, he went to Rome with Brunelleschi and became
one of the first Renaissance artists interested in ancient monuments. Reflections of classical putti
(male infants) can be found in his rendering of the lively cherubs in the Singing Gallery (1433 38,
cathedral mus.) and in the pulpit at Prato. Classical influence is also evident in his bronze David
(c.1432, Bargello), one of the earliest freestanding nude figures of the Renaissance. In demand
throughout Italy, Donatello was invited to Padua in 1443, where he stayed for 10 years as the head of
an enormous workshop. He designed the equestrian statue of Gattamelata (1447 53) and the high altar
for Sant Antonio (1446 50). Upon his return to Florence, he carved the acutely expressive Magdalen
(c.1460?, baptistery), which was greatly damaged by the flood of 1966. In his last years he worked on
the pulpits of San Lorenzo, creating a magnificent series of reliefs. He was one of the most influential
painters and sculptors of his time. Most of his works have remained in Florence, but a good
representation can be seen in London s Victoria and Albert Museum. Two examples of his work can be
found in American collections, an unfinished David (National Gall. of Art, Washington, D.C.) and the

The Gebusi Research Paper
Avery Urban Anthropology 12/15/15 002724241 The Gebusi The Gebusi have come a long way from
where they were when Bruce first found them in 1980. They made progress from what they once
were, having skyrocketing homicide rates and being classified as a tribe of cannibals; to being a tribe
that basis their economy off of reciprocity and sister marriage. The Gebusi were once a tribe of people
that had very stringent beliefs. The Gebusi were a tribe of people that worked together in all aspects of
life, from felling trees and semi domesticating pigs, to living in long houses and participating in
reciprocity. In 1998 Knauft noted that the Gebusi have dramatically changed from what they were in

The Gebusi had done something rather remarkable. This new development had changed their culture
in every way possible, we see that in the differences between the 1982 and the 1998 Gebusi; however
in 2002 instead of doing what most cultures would have done, which is continued with the western
development, they instead found a medium between what they once were and what they had become.
The Gebusi created this in between culture that included both traditional and modern influences. The
Gebusi built new long houses over in the Gasumi corners, which indicated that the youngest
generation had been initiated in accordance with the older traditional ways and their farming was also
indicative of being traditional, using semi domestic pigs. The customs that still resembled the modern
influences were those that of religion, and maturation. Because of the introduction of Christianity and
Catholicism their belief system never reverted back to what it once was but did show a mixture
between the traditional practices and the new ones. Also because of the independency that this
development brought for the women, they never regressed back into their traditional customs, but
instead decided to continuously allow the women the opportunity have the free will to choose whom

The History of Major Earthquakes Around World Essay
The term earthquake comes from the Greek term for shaking. An earthquake is a visible rip across the
Earth s surface due to a release of energy and stored stress in the Earth s crust and causes seismic
waves. Earthquakes have been around since the time of the earliest civilizations. Earthquakes used to
be compared to the unrest of spiritual beings. Specifically, Aristotle and the Ancient Greeks stated that
earthquakes were the result of the underground winds . The earliest earthquakes were recorded by
seismometers which calculate the waves generated by each earthquake. The original seismometer was
the Wood Anderson seismometer. When an earthquake would occur a structure would dangle and

The plates are in constant motion. Where they interact, along their margins, important geological
processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes (Spall 1).
Plate tectonics are one of the most influential factors of earthquakes. When tectonic plates slide past
each other an earthquake occurs. Typical plate tectonics move at about the same rate your fingernail
grows. The process is extremely slow before the plate moves significantly enough to cause an earth
quake but it does happen. These tectonic plates are on the fault lines which are considered earthquake
hot spots.
Earthquakes typically occur in relation to other earthquakes. After shocks that follow earthquakes,
typically occur around the same fault break as the original earthquake or can occur on nearby fault
lines as well. Earthquakes can also be triggers for future earthquakes occurring on the same fault line
or neighboring fault lines anytime from seconds to years after the orginal mainshock. In recent
decades, scientists have learned that faults and earthquakes communicate with one another in far more
diverse and interesting ways than the classic foreshock mainshock aftershock (Hough 1).
A specific type of catastrophic earthquake that comes to mind is a tsunami. A tsunami is considered an
undersea earthquake. Tsunamis are caused

The Effects Of Nature On The Hospital Setting
The use of nature in the hospital setting has been used to reduce stress and provide a getaway not only
for the patient but for visitors and hospital staff as well. A review article by Ulrich, Quan, Zimring,
Joseph, and Choudhary (2004) summarized the role of physical environment which included nature.
Nature is emphasized in providing a distraction for the patient from their illness and the hospital
setting. (Ulrich et al., 2004) Simply using pictures of nature has been found to reduce anxiety and
reduce the dosage of pain medications of patients in the ICU. (Ulrich, 2004) The presence of nature
through a bedside window was found to be just as beneficial in improving the patients recovery and
well being. (Ulrich 2004) The presence of nature dramatically reduced the agitation of Alzheimer s
patients when bathing with recorded nature sounds. (Ulrich, 2004) Hospital gardens can be a direct
source of nature in proximity for patients that are easily accessible. Scenic art can be soothing in
comparison to a white wall. The descriptive colors can stimulate the mind and provide a focal point
away from medical devices. All these examples support the claim that nature does remedy the stress
patients feel in the hospital setting. It allows patients to relax and have a sense of calm when
confronting the daunting idea of fighting for their lives against a sickness. Nature provides an escape
that is outside the white walls of the hospital. Patients can forget for a moment that they are

The On The Beauty Of Lionfish
Lionfish come with red, maroon or brown stripes and specks on their body and flashy fins. Their
beautiful long fins flowing gracefully in the water and dramatic colors are fascinating and inspiring.
No doubt lionfish are one of popular aquarium fishes as well as painting subjects. As my final project,
I want to create a captivating image, while enjoying exploration of the beauty and details of lionfish.
For the underwater backdrop, I want to suggest a coral reef environment. A solid or simple blue
underwater backdrop would be sufficient to show the beauty of lionfish, but it is too plain for my
taste. I decide to paint underwater ripples along with a brain coral. The challenge is creating a
background that doesn t compete against the flamboyant and colorful lionfish, yet adds enough
interest to the viewer s eye.
Palette : new gamboge, quinacridone gold, phthalo green, cobalt turquoise, phthalo blue, ultramarine
blue, Prussian blue, indigo, burnt sienna, brown madder, magenta, purple
1. I sketch out the Lionfish first on tracing paper. I have a few reference photos of lionfish, however
none of them has a perfect form of their fins. After I select one which has a good body shape, I alter
the imperfect fin shapes. Once I finalize the shapes of the fins, I draw the details of stripes on the body
and fins. I also pay close attention to fin rays and specks. When I finish working on the lionfish, I
draw the outline of the dome shaped brain coral and a few lines across the

Essay on Shakespeare s Macbeth and Kurosawa s Throne of Blood
Throne of Blood, the 1957 filmed translation of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, was made in Japan,
written in Japanese by Shinobu Hashimoto, Ryuzo Kikushima, Akira Kurosowa and Hideo Oguni and
directed by Akira Kurosawa. It has many times been called an adaptation of Macbeth, however it is
not. As storytellers have done since time began, Kurosawa took a story and made it his own:
translating a play text into another medium; a separate setting; a differing culture in a completely
different style and for a completely contrasting audience.
The film wasn t even intended to be an adaptation of Macbeth. When composing Throne of Blood, the
writing team involved did not even consult Shakespeare s script, as Stuart Galbraith details in ... Show

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth for James I of England, a Scottish King, who was an ancestor of Banquo.
Kurosawa wrote for a contemporary audience of 1950 s Japan, setting his story in a culture that was
known to them, as Shakespeare had done. Similar to the kabuki historical drama or jidai mono, Throne
of Blood bases its story around the warriors and noblemen of the feudal Japan, a worthy equivalent to
Shakespeare s Scottish soldiers and aristocracy of the early middle ages.
In Akira Kurosawa and Intertextual Cinema, James Goodwin says that Kurosawa `demonstrates a
preference for eras of disruption in samurai culture, of massive social upheaval, or of civil war. For
Throne of Blood he had in mind the Sengoko period of civil wars (1467 1568) when there were
frequent incidents of gekokujo, the overthrow of a superior by his own retainers. Kurosawa uses his
setting in a similar way to that of Shakespeare, who uses various examples of imagery concerning the
idea of imbalance: of order and disorder. In Act Two, Scene Four of Macbeth he uses many hints to
tell his audience how chaotic things have become for his characters.

Lovato s Acting Career
Both Lovato s mother and father were involved in the music industry, so it only made sense she would
one day fall in love with music as well. Not only was her mother a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader, she
was also a recording country music artist (Cruz, 2015). Her father, Patrick Lovato, was a musician and
a sound engineer. Lovato, herself, got into music at a young age, when she sang Celine Dion s, My
Heart Will Go On, at her kindergarten talent show. From then on, her mother and sisters knew she was
gifted, and music would have a major impact on her life. Lovato s music and acting career initially
began in the pageant industry (Lovato et al., Davis, 2017). Both she and her sister, Dallas, were in

her first larger character role (Cruz, 2015; Lovato et al., Davis, 2017). Being casted in the Disney

Mackenzie King Research Paper
Mackenzie King and his Leadership
Intro:
Strong leadership is taking ownership of a responsibility, willingly, creatively and effectively. Strong
leaders provide direction and support through unstable times, think deeply about the future, account
everyone s beliefs and opinions, and influence their followers. Every successful leader needs four
qualities; confidence, fairness, intelligence and persuasiveness. One of history s strongest leaders was
William Lyon Mackenzie King. Mackenzie King is remembered as one of the greatest Canadian
leaders in history as he lead the Liberal and Canadian Parliament through the happiest and most
troubled times for over two decades. His leadership was composed of his strong confidence, the

Strong leaders require the character trait of fairness as it shows equal treatment and respect of different
opinions, and avoids many conflicts. Mackenzie King demonstrated fairness with the English and
French speakers in Canada to unite Canada as one, and to avoid conflicts. For example, when King
was first elected in 1921, his major goal was to unite all Canadians, mainly focusing on Protestants
and Catholics. A month prior to being elected, King wrote in his diary; A United Canada I made the
first consideration...I want farmers, labour, soldiers, business and professions represented, and balance
between Protestants, and Catholics. This demonstrates the fairness Mackenzie King shows towards all
labour workers and professions as well as both Anglophones and Francophones, even before getting
elected. His first consideration is a balance between Protestants and Catholics , which displays the
significance fairness has in King s eyes, as it shows that King s first priority is the fairness between
the two groups. Specifically, Mackenzie King demonstrates his fairness with French and English
during the Conscription Crisis of 1944. To obtain the support from the French, King had pledged The
present government believes that conscription of men for overseas service would not be necessary or
an effective step. Let me say that so long

Jose Domingo Ulloa was born in Chitre, Republic of Panama. Domingo lived from 1919 1997 and
was known as The Father of Chicano Art. Domingo created this piece of art work in 1957. The
painting was based upon real life events that happen day to day. It was one event that really stood out
to Domingo which took place in 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The painting is about nine black
students who tried to enter one of the most highly accomplished and prestigious school in Arkansas,
Little Rock High School on September 23, 1997. As these students were entering the school they got
assaulted with stones, rocks and rubbish by the whites. As you can see on the painting Domingo tried

Gender Inequality And Ethnic Inequality
Introduction
To begin with, it might be necessary to define the terms of Gender inequality and ethnic inequality in
employment. While gender disadvantage refers to the prejudicial treatment of an individual or group
based solely on issues of gender (Robert, 2008); ethnic inequality indicates the unfair distribution of
opportunities and resources between the majority white and black and minority ethnic groups in the
labour market. The two issues have been rooted in the job market for long, and despite recent progress
of improvement, the issues remain and probably have evolved into more covert and complex forms. In
the following context, the two kinds of disadvantages will firstly be introduced respectively, together
with reasons behind the scene; yet, acknowledge the relevance of gender differences to ethnic
inequality, the explanations given for BME group s predicament will be aware of the overlaps between
gender and ethnicity issues; a brief conclusion will also be provided in the final part, however, given
the complexity of the picture, for example, the extent to which women and men from different ethnic
groups experience disadvantages varies (Vittachi, 2011), it is hard to generalise and any predictions
about future prospect may not be realized.
The Position of Women in the Labour Market
Over the last 40 years, women have achieved great success in gaining their equalities in the
workplace, this view is particularly advocated by a stream of feminists called Liberal

the same. I m less worried about the economic rise of other countries, and more worried about future
conflicts over natural resources and power policies. Historically, a major change in world order is

If you control the mass media, you can take the masses in any direction, they we are all subject to the
mercy of who heads the government and those who brought them to power. CEO Q This is a grim
outlook of the future, isn t it? Med Jones Not at all, we see that as a realistic outlook. The forces of
change existed throughout history, except now the international community is better at managing
change than in the past. In fact, I m more optimistic this time, the odds are in favor of peace more than
wars. Globalization has many issues; however, one of the main benefits of globalization is that it
created global companies and global markets that allowed investors and traders to share in the benefit
of each other. Despite the intense competition, US and China has far more to gain from working
together than fighting each other. As long as the communications, investments, and trade routes
remain open, I m not worried. As long as the cooperation activities are more than the competition, I m
not worried. I would worry when I see developments in the other direction. CEO Q It has been several
years since your paper on the US economic risks and strategies in 2006, what can be done to
overcome the challenges for the next decade? Med Jones The categories of US challenges and
opportunities remain the same, except that they have become more intensified, that is more debt, more
technological advancement, more partisan politics. This

  • 2. Hunger in Ethiopia Essay How would you feel if your body slowly turns on you, devouring the cells that make up your very being? What would you do if you were so weak that you couldn t even hold a loved one in your arms? How would you feel if you couldn t think straight because the pain of hunger was so intense? What would you do..? Starvation results in a series of devastating events that can ultimately lead to death. When a person eats, the body extracts needed nutrients for cellular maintenance and repair. This requires energy which is provided for by the metabolism of the food. If we consume more than what is required at that time, our body stores the excess as adipose tissue or fat. This fat serves as a reserve of potential energy in times of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The location and geography of the country has caused the people to experience famine after famine, leaving many to die from starvation. A famine is in definition, A great shortage or an extreme scarcity of food over an extended period of time (Webster). There are several different types of famine that occur in different types of the world. The type that Ethiopia generally goes through is called a Ravallion. During a Ravallion famine, there are unusually large amounts of causalities with extreme shortages of food in certain parts of the population. There are many things that cause famine, whether it s draught, plague, or civil disrupt. Right now, Ethiopia is experiencing a draught that has killed almost all of their crops. Because of the famines that Ethiopia experiences most every year, there is usually an increase in the amount of people malnourished. This year, 11to 14 million people are expected to go hungry leaving many to starve to death. Ethiopia has experienced many draughts like these, the worst however, being in 1983. This draught lasted two years and the draught alone killed over 400,000 people in one year, this doesn t include the deaths that were due to starvation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983%E2%80%931985_famine_in_Ethiopia). Another factor that causes starvation in Ethiopia is its economy. Ethiopia is in and has always been in a very poor economic state. Crops account for 41% of the country s GDP however; the ... Linear and Nonlinear Optical Susceptibilities and Hyperpolarizability of Borate LiNaB4O7 Single Crystals: Theory and Experiment Ali Hussain Reshak, Xuean Chen, S. Auluck and H. Kamarudin Journal of Applied Physics 2012 Volume 112, Issue 5, Pages 053526 (1 11) Since the successful demonstration of second harmonic generation by a propagation of a ruby laser beam via a quartz crystal by Franken et al,1 borate materials have been widely studied to employ in the potential applications such as nonlinear optics (NLO) and laser (mainly in visible and UV light) engineering.2, 3, 4, 5 Materials with NLO properties are useful for generating new frequency laser sources that cannot be directly produced from the common laser sources.2 Consequently, NLO materials have enabled a wider range of frequencies produced from the available laser. Borate materials have a few great properties, for example, short growth period, high damage threshold, large effective nonlinear coefficient and good mechanical properties.6 This suggests that borate materials are well fitted for the purpose of laser frequency conversion. BaB2O4, LiB3O5, CsB3O5 and YCa4(BO3)3O are examples of well known borate based NLO crystals.2 An early review on the comparison of the damage threshold and optical transmittance of these mentioned borate crystal compounds have been done by Becker in which the use of the favourable anionic group and birefringence in the borate materials are the essential features needed to produce ... • 5. Marxist Criticism In David Fincher s Fight Club Fight Club is the kind of movie that you would expect to stay on screen. But it doesn t. Many parts of fight club are actually part of Marxism, a system of thought developed by Karl Marx. Certain scenes connect strongly with Marxism, albeit imperfectly. In Fight Club, directed by David Fincher, the Marxist thought of excess being a sin is portrayed through Jack s two locations of residence, Jack s initial defense of his possessions, and the scene of Jack and Tyler making soap from human fat. Jack initially lives a very average life. His job and life is so average that anybody can relate to him. His apartment is decorated almost exclusively with items from the Ikea catalogue. He tells us that he has given in to the ...Ikea nesting instinct. Often, consumers are convinced they are buying something different than the object; they unconsciously seek to purchase their ideal selves Even though liposuction merely changes appearance, it is solely artificial. Soap represents the artificiality of society and its ability to wash away humanity. Consumers become so engrossed with the spectacle of commodities that they lose their humanity, trading it for possessions. The soap made by the Paper Street Soap Company is made of the excess of the bourgeoisie. Marla asks to store a bag of fat in his freezer because she wanted a collagen trust fund: The best kind of collagen is your own fat, sucked out of your thighs, processed and cleaned and injected back into your lips. This stuff in the fridge at home, it was Marla s collagen trust fund. The fat comes from her mother, someone who can afford to do this. Only a member of the bourgeoisie would engage in such an activity, because only a member of the bourgeoisie would afford to be able to do so. Tyler/the narrator scavenge through medical waste dumps to find more bags of human fat which they can turn into soap. The creation of the soap is made from the excess of the bourgeoisie. The bourgeoisie in this aspect is reabsorbing their own excess and practicing excess at the same time, by paying twenty dollars for soap. In turn, he sells the soap to Nordstrom s at twenty dollars per bar, an exorbitant price for something so basic that only a member of the bourgeoisie could afford to pay. To make matters more ironic, customers say that it is the best soap ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Sustainable Design Versus Aesthetic Design Design is that area of human experience, where skill and knowledge is concerned with man s ability to mould the environment according to his material and spiritual needs. It is used to analyse and identify problems to find an appropriate solution. Designers have created all kind of functional designs to help improve people s lives. They were interested in the nature of beauty, art, and taste and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. Although there are examples of pre historic art, they are rare and the guidelines that they followed are not so clear, Thus the aesthetic doctrines that guided their production and interpretation one mostly unknown. However, these cultural aesthetic merits have been undermined by very restricted pro environmental guidelines (Donald et al, 2008) such as, The Design Accord. As a result, modern architecture has lost the engagement with the local cultural identity and the sense of creativity has been reduced (Donald et al, 2008). Where experimenting and exploiting the plant resources will result in a better world than trying to protect the environment (Donald et al, 2008). A good architecture does not need any ethical diminution and responsibility regarding the environment and just design for the design sake (Donald et al, 2008). What they both fails to consider is that the aesthetic value and the environment value, if they are used together it will benefit the design. Good design should have the flexibility, creativity and responsible design approaches and methods, and also good communication (Wolf 2010). According to Meyer (2008) the aesthetic value could increase the functionality of a particular the design. He also states that In designing urban eras parks consider as aesthetic value, but it also has an important effect on the environment in two ways: they are environment cleaning machines and shady groves of trees reducing temperatures, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. ... • 7. Ethnic Conflicts in Nigeria The military elites made the situation even worse by staging coups and making a mockery of democracy in Nigeria. The military era was marked by corruption, ineptitude and confusion. It drove Nigeria into many problems including economic problems, poverty, and ethno religious conflicts until the 1990s. The military continued intervening because they believed the civilian leaders were inept and indecisive. Ethnic conflicts continued to escalate through the democratic transition in Nigeria, as various ethnic groups demanded political restructuring. The federal structure has developed deep cracks and demands urgent action to fix it. What is most worrisome in Nigeria is the religious dimension of ethnic conflict and competition for power and oil wealth. The numerous ethno religious conflicts that the northern cities of Kaduna, Kano, Jos and Zamfara have witnessed, came about from the introduction of Muslim Sharia courts, in addition to the South s demands for autonomy. The continuing conflict is a sign Nigeria s lack of effective mechanisms to manage ethnic conflicts. The intense ethnic conflicts that rocked Nigeria and South Africa have pushed them to develop constitutionally backed institutions for conflict management. In South Africa, the state has prevented further conflicts by developing multiple democratic approaches to create a foundation for peace and security. The new constitution crafted an impressive document aimed to heal the wounds of the past and to build a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Fate Of The White Elephant The Fate of The White Elephant (Draft) The short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway is an argument between the man and a woman about abortion. It shows how an unexpected white elephant can affect their relationship, force them to bring life changing decisions, and present a threat to their self identity. Besides the main argument, the author through the scenery and the dialog are presenting other conflicts and arguments. Some of them are the nonverbal communication, what choices they have, and the couple s future. The author of the story, Ernest Hemingway, was born in 1861 in the Chicago suburbs. In his life, he traveled to different places in the world, and he was married four times. During the Spanish Civil War, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it seems simple, the story carries a couple of parallel explanations about the situation. Hemingway has never mentioned the word in his story, but the main topic of conversation between the couple is abortion. First of all, the story shows the balance of power of the man and the woman in the relationship. After finding that Jig is pregnant, the man is trying to talk her into having an awfully simple operation . (Hemingway) When it comes to power in the relationship, at first the man is trying to be dominant. He does not show any interest in the woman s health, and he is insensitive to Jig s needs. Hemingway in the story represents the American as a man who wants his woman to serve solely as the source of his sexual pleasure, who denies her the motherhood that she desires. (Holder). However, soon after, he receives a rejection from Jig. I know we will. You don t have to be afraid. I ve known lots of people that have done it. So have I. And afterwards they were all so happy. (Hemingway) . The woman is trying to tell the man that she does not want to end up regretting this decision that can ruin her life. She is trying to stop the man of talking nonsense and that she knows about the effects of such procedure. In the next dialog Hemingway is defining the pregnancy by using the hills and the white elephants to describe the relationship: The girl was looking off at the line of hills. ... • 10. Analysis Of The Book Crossing The Wire Hispanics, mostly Mexicans, are not being treated equally because of their different culture and lifestyle and people need to treat them fairly and enforce laws against discrimination. In the book, Crossing the Wire, Hobbs displays what a Mexican has to go through when they are crossing the border to the United States for a good cause. Hispanics have been discriminated ever since the Mexicans gained independence in 1821 from Spain. In recent years African Americans have been receiving the most attention in America because of so much racial discrimination, but they are not the only big race being discriminated. Mexicans are getting just as much hate. This problem is going to continue because the Mexican population in the United States is rapidly growing. Humans need to figure out a solution to stop this hatred, so all races can unite with each other. If we unite we can try to agree with each other on things and make the earth a better place to live. Ever since the 1900s, there has been a large number of Mexicans immigrating illegally and legally into the United States. During this time, Mexicans mostly lived in the southwestern part of America, where most schools in the area were segregated, job opportunities were limited, public facilities were limited to Mexican Americans and housing was in poor quality. For example, in California, public swimming pools were open only one day a week for Mexican Americans (Daniels). In 1993 the National School Boards Association found ... You can be to aggressive in the NFL and serously hurt someone despite the gear you wear. You can be a MLB pitcher and mess up on a pitch and hurt a player by throwing a pitch at a player s head. You have to be very careful how you play the sport you are playing. Sports are supposed to be competive and fun, but you have to remember to be safe and care for the other competiors you are competing against. Sports safety is a big deal, and is very important in all sports types. Like in the NFL, there are rules to help players stay safe. One of the most common and important problems you hear about is when a player gets a concussion. A concussion is a temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. When a NFL player takes a hit to the head, for example getting tackled, that player who took the blow to the head immediately gets taken off the field and is given a thorough evaluation by a doctor that all NFL teams have present with them at games. That player could be having a fantastic game, but if the doctor has come to the conclusion that the player may have a concussion, that player will not be able to play the remainder of the game for the players safety. A concussion can become a danger to the brain of the player if the player went out and took another hit to the head. These rules from the NFL are set for a reason so that the player does not get a serious injury. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Patterson, provides us with a concise and historically correct assessment of the time period of the twenty seven years between the resignation of Richard Nixon and the election of George W. Bush. Patterson makes it a point to provide for us the relational ties between the social, economical, cultural, political aspects of life in America. Patterson begins his narrative by placing us in the troubled 70s. He describes the 1970s as grim, tasteless years that are best put out of mind. (p. 13) The mood of the 1970s was described as gloomy, gaudy and depressing. The issue of race remained the nation s number one problem. During this time there were only two ... He notes that, a number of public school seemed out of control, (p. 45) doing things such as swearing in the classrooms and on the streets, spray painting buildings and using drugs and alcohol. Then there was the topic of sex. It seemed to be advancing in the culture almost as rapidly as violence, says Patterson. Their was a decline in sexual morality. The sexual themes on TV seemed to be advancing. Patterson gives us some examples: Mary Tyler Moore Show and Charlie s Angels. Television shows likes these reflected a sexualizing of the culture. (p.46) Patterson later talks about the rapid rise in divorce rates and the increase of number of births happening outside of marriage. During this time agitation for women s rights were at an all time high. Many women began to work and speak out against sexual discrimination. All these controversies over sex and family life would have been cause enough for concern even in sunny economic times. (p. 58) Patterson goes on to discuss the economic problems of this period. The stagflation persisted into the 1980s. This was a result of the structural changes in the economy. It went from a manufacturing base to a post industrial society that depended on services. The alpha helix secondary structure of the protein coils because of the hydrogen bonds between the backbones of their amino acids. The backbone of the amino acid is the peptide bonds. So because of the hydrogen bonds forming between the amine nitrogens and the carbonyl oxygens in different amino acids the protein has become a helix shape. Ill willed entities (with various motivations) are continuously attempting to obviate whatever protective mechanisms are placed in their way. I would like to take this opportunity to remind all e mail users of the following advice: If a message appears to come from an unexpected source, an entity you have never dealt with, or to which you have never given your business e mail address, you should immediately be at least somewhat suspicious of its authenticity. If a message makes claims regarding a business connection or account which does not exist, you should also be suspicious. It has many times been called an adaptation of Macbeth, however it is not. As storytellers have done since time began, Kurosawa took a story and made it his own: translating a play text into another medium; a separate setting; a differing culture in a completely different style and for a completely contrasting audience. Kurosawa wrote for a contemporary audience of 1950 s Japan, setting his story in a culture that was known to them, as Shakespeare had done. Similar to the kabuki historical drama or jidai mono, Throne of Blood bases its story around the warriors and noblemen of the feudal Japan, a worthy equivalent to Shakespeare s Scottish soldiers and aristocracy of the early middle ages. In Akira Kurosawa and Intertextual Cinema, James Goodwin says that Kurosawa `demonstrates a preference for eras of disruption in samurai culture, of massive social upheaval, or of civil war. For Throne of Blood he had in mind the Sengoko period of civil wars (1467 1568) when there were frequent incidents of gekokujo, the overthrow of a superior by his own retainers. Kurosawa uses his setting in a similar way to that of Shakespeare, who uses various examples of imagery concerning the idea of imbalance: of order and disorder. In Act Two, Scene Four of Macbeth he uses many hints to tell his audience how chaotic things have become for his characters. • 34. Mackenzie King Research Paper Mackenzie King and his Leadership Intro: Strong leadership is taking ownership of a responsibility, willingly, creatively and effectively. Strong leaders provide direction and support through unstable times, think deeply about the future, account everyone s beliefs and opinions, and influence their followers. Every successful leader needs four qualities; confidence, fairness, intelligence and persuasiveness. One of history s strongest leaders was William Lyon Mackenzie King. Mackenzie King is remembered as one of the greatest Canadian leaders in history as he lead the Liberal and Canadian Parliament through the happiest and most troubled times for over two decades. His leadership was composed of his strong confidence, the fairness he demonstrated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strong leaders require the character trait of fairness as it shows equal treatment and respect of different opinions, and avoids many conflicts. Mackenzie King demonstrated fairness with the English and French speakers in Canada to unite Canada as one, and to avoid conflicts. For example, when King was first elected in 1921, his major goal was to unite all Canadians, mainly focusing on Protestants and Catholics. A month prior to being elected, King wrote in his diary; A United Canada I made the first consideration...I want farmers, labour, soldiers, business and professions represented, and balance between Protestants, and Catholics. This demonstrates the fairness Mackenzie King shows towards all labour workers and professions as well as both Anglophones and Francophones, even before getting elected. His first consideration is a balance between Protestants and Catholics , which displays the significance fairness has in King s eyes, as it shows that King s first priority is the fairness between the two groups. Specifically, Mackenzie King demonstrates his fairness with French and English during the Conscription Crisis of 1944. To obtain the support from the French, King had pledged The present government believes that conscription of men for overseas service would not be necessary or an effective step. Let me say that so long ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Jose Domingo Ullo The Father Of Chicano Art Jose Domingo Ulloa was born in Chitre, Republic of Panama. Domingo lived from 1919 1997 and was known as The Father of Chicano Art. Domingo created this piece of art work in 1957. The painting was based upon real life events that happen day to day. It was one event that really stood out to Domingo which took place in 1957 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The painting is about nine black students who tried to enter one of the most highly accomplished and prestigious school in Arkansas, Little Rock High School on September 23, 1997. As these students were entering the school they got assaulted with stones, rocks and rubbish by the whites. As you can see on the painting Domingo tried to capture as much of the horror on the canvas that those black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Gender Inequality And Ethnic Inequality Introduction To begin with, it might be necessary to define the terms of Gender inequality and ethnic inequality in employment. While gender disadvantage refers to the prejudicial treatment of an individual or group based solely on issues of gender (Robert, 2008); ethnic inequality indicates the unfair distribution of opportunities and resources between the majority white and black and minority ethnic groups in the labour market. The two issues have been rooted in the job market for long, and despite recent progress of improvement, the issues remain and probably have evolved into more covert and complex forms. In the following context, the two kinds of disadvantages will firstly be introduced respectively, together with reasons behind the scene; yet, acknowledge the relevance of gender differences to ethnic inequality, the explanations given for BME group s predicament will be aware of the overlaps between gender and ethnicity issues; a brief conclusion will also be provided in the final part, however, given the complexity of the picture, for example, the extent to which women and men from different ethnic groups experience disadvantages varies (Vittachi, 2011), it is hard to generalise and any predictions about future prospect may not be realized. The Position of Women in the Labour Market Over the last 40 years, women have achieved great success in gaining their equalities in the workplace, this view is particularly advocated by a stream of feminists called Liberal ... • 37. What Is The New World Order CEO Q In 2009 you spoke about the New World Order and the decline of the US empire and rise of Asia and China, do you have an update for our readers? Med Jones We see a slowing and acceleration of momentum in different periods over the next few decades, but the forces and the direction remain the same. I m less worried about the economic rise of other countries, and more worried about future conflicts over natural resources and power policies. Historically, a major change in world order is usually accompanied by wars. CEO Q Are you forecasting a world war? Med Jones Not necessarily a world war and not an immediate one, but more likely proxy or covert wars, political interference and sabotage, similar to the cold war era. It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you control the mass media, you can take the masses in any direction, they we are all subject to the mercy of who heads the government and those who brought them to power. CEO Q This is a grim outlook of the future, isn t it? Med Jones Not at all, we see that as a realistic outlook. The forces of change existed throughout history, except now the international community is better at managing change than in the past. In fact, I m more optimistic this time, the odds are in favor of peace more than wars. Globalization has many issues; however, one of the main benefits of globalization is that it created global companies and global markets that allowed investors and traders to share in the benefit of each other. Despite the intense competition, US and China has far more to gain from working together than fighting each other. As long as the communications, investments, and trade routes remain open, I m not worried. As long as the cooperation activities are more than the competition, I m not worried. I would worry when I see developments in the other direction. CEO Q It has been several years since your paper on the US economic risks and strategies in 2006, what can be done to overcome the challenges for the next decade? Med Jones The categories of US challenges and opportunities remain the same, except that they have become more intensified, that is more debt, more technological advancement, more partisan politics.
