design, its Principles and
Elements
Graphic design, also known as communication design, is the art of
planning and constructing ideas and information with visual and
textual content.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
1. Lines - are considered as the simplest or the most basic element of
art.
2. Color - is the most influential element of design.
3. Texture - refers to the feel of a surface.
4. Shape - usually serves as container of information.
5. Text - refers to the font or font styles used in design.
6. Space - is the area occupied and unoccupied by the other elements.
7. Size - suggests emphasis of information.
8. Value – This element refers to the lightness of an area in a design.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
1. Balance – This refers to how elements are put together in the design.
2. Movement – This principle refers to the repetition of elements to direct the
movement of the eye through the design.
3. Contrast – This refers to the distinctiveness of the elements.
4. Emphasis – This refers to the use of colors, size and contrast to provide
special attention and importance to the to the subject of the design.
5. Pattern- This element refers to the organization of alternated or repeated
elements or motifs.
6. Unity – In this principle, all the parts of the design must be arranged to give
the viewer the feeling that all are linked together.
