 The Inter-national Olympic Committee, formed by
the Paris Congress of 25th June, 1894 with control
and development of modern Olympic Games has
the following terms of reference.
 1. To see the games to be regularly held.
 2. To see to it that the games are increasingly
worthy of their glorious history and noble ideals
that was the inspiration of Coubertin and his
collaborators, when they took action to revive the
games.
 3. By encouraging and consolidating friendship
between sportsmen of all countries, to direct and
maintain Amateur sport on the right road.
 The committee has only one member from one
country, except those countries that have had an
Olympic games or have made a special contribution to
Olympic movement, which have two members. The
I.O.C. members elect a president by ballot from
amongst themselves, who holds office for 8 years. The
president can be elected for another term of 4 years.
There are two wise presidents elected for a period of 4
years. They are both eligible for re-election. The vice-
president and five members of the executive board are
elected every four years. This nine member’s body,
including the president, control the Olympic
movement and assures the holding of the games every
four years.
 Head quaters of the I.O.C. is located in
Lausanne (Switzerland) The chief executive of
the I.O.C. is the The permanent secretary
General chosen by the executive board, who
functions under the direction of the president.
 Besides the National Olympic Committee the
inter-national federation controlling the various
games included in the Olympic programme are the
important supporting factors in the Olympic
movement.
 The I.O.C. selects the sites and dates of the
Olympic games. The honour of paying host to the
games always goes to a city, not a country. The
actual planning and organisation of the games is
then done by the National Olympic Committee of
the country or the host city.
The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896
at Athens through the efforts of Baron- de- Coubertin.
India sent its contingent for the first time in 1970, when 6
competitors represented this country . The contingent
included a wrestler and athletes through the efforts of
Y.M.C.A. The Olympic movement was popularised in
India and in 1923 first Indian olympic games were held and
India sent 8 competitors in 1924 Olympic games at Paris. In
1927 Indian Olympic Association (I.O.A.) was formed with
effort of dr.A.G.Noehren and Mr. H.C. Buck . Mr. Daribi
Tata was its first president with Dr. D.G. Noehren its
secretary and G.D. Sondhi as Assistant secretary. Since
then Indian Olympic Association has been functioning in
India and is affiliated with International Olympic
Committee.
 The Indian Olympic association was formed with the
following objectives.
 1. To develop and protect the olympic movement and
amature sports.
 2. To promote and encourage physical, moral and cultural
education of youth of the nation for the development of
character, good health and good citizenship.
 3. To enforce all rules and regulation of International
Olympic Committee.
 4. To enforce and defend the exclusive right of association
to the use of Olympic flage and Olympic insignia confining
their use and as for as possible, that the words “Olympic”
and “Olympiad” to effective concerning the olympic games.
 5. To be an official organisation in complete and sole charge of all Olympic matters in
the country.
 6. To educate the people of the country as to the value of maturism in sports.
 7. In co-operation with National sport Federations /Associations to guard and enforce
armatures rules.
 8. To maintain the highest ideals of amateurism and to promote interest there,
particularly in connection with the Olympic games and other games under the
patronage of the I.O.C.
 9. To have Full and complete jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to the
participation of India in Olympic games and other games under the patronage of I.O.C.
 10. In co-operation with national sports federations/ Associations to organise and
control the teams that will represent India in Olympic games and other games under the
patronage of the I.O.C.
 11. To undertake with assistance of National sports federations/associations the
financial management, transportation, maintenance and welfare of teams from India
taking part in the Olympic games and other games under the patronage of the I.O.C.
 12. To certify the amateur status of competitors from India for such International
competition require such certification.
 13. To stimulate the interest of the people of the country in the promotion of sports and
games in Olympic programme and to that end the formation of the state Olympic
association for development of sports and games within a state and National Amateur
Sports Federation for sports and games in the Olympic programme.
 14. To act as the channel of communication between National Sports Federation and
Govt. Of India for financial or other Assistance to the Federation.
 15. To admit the membership of State Olympic Association and National Amateur
Sports Federation which shall be required to submit their annual reports and audited
statement of accounts to the I.O.A for information.
 16. To take disciplinary action against any federation for misbehaviour to any other
undesirable activity bringing discredit to the country.
 17. To do all other things that may be necessary or expeditious to promote the
development of amateur sports and games in the country and for the conduct of its
business.
 There shall be election of the office bearers once in every four years to elect the
following:-
 Executive Council
 1. A President
 2. Seven vice president
 3. A Secretary General
 4. Two Joint Secretaries
 5. One Honorary Treasurer
 6. Five members elected from among the representative of State Olympic Association.
 7. Nine members elected among the representative of National
Federations/Associations/S.S.C.B.( Service Sports Control Board)
 The office bearers of the association will hold others for one term of four years and may
be eligible for re-election for a life term of period. No such office bearers shall hold office
consecutively for more than two terms or eight years.

Governing bodies and policies of physical education and

  • 2.  The Inter-national Olympic Committee, formed by the Paris Congress of 25th June, 1894 with control and development of modern Olympic Games has the following terms of reference.  1. To see the games to be regularly held.  2. To see to it that the games are increasingly worthy of their glorious history and noble ideals that was the inspiration of Coubertin and his collaborators, when they took action to revive the games.  3. By encouraging and consolidating friendship between sportsmen of all countries, to direct and maintain Amateur sport on the right road.
  • 3.  The committee has only one member from one country, except those countries that have had an Olympic games or have made a special contribution to Olympic movement, which have two members. The I.O.C. members elect a president by ballot from amongst themselves, who holds office for 8 years. The president can be elected for another term of 4 years. There are two wise presidents elected for a period of 4 years. They are both eligible for re-election. The vice- president and five members of the executive board are elected every four years. This nine member’s body, including the president, control the Olympic movement and assures the holding of the games every four years.
  • 4.  Head quaters of the I.O.C. is located in Lausanne (Switzerland) The chief executive of the I.O.C. is the The permanent secretary General chosen by the executive board, who functions under the direction of the president.
  • 5.  Besides the National Olympic Committee the inter-national federation controlling the various games included in the Olympic programme are the important supporting factors in the Olympic movement.  The I.O.C. selects the sites and dates of the Olympic games. The honour of paying host to the games always goes to a city, not a country. The actual planning and organisation of the games is then done by the National Olympic Committee of the country or the host city.
  • 6. The first modern Olympic games were held in 1896 at Athens through the efforts of Baron- de- Coubertin. India sent its contingent for the first time in 1970, when 6 competitors represented this country . The contingent included a wrestler and athletes through the efforts of Y.M.C.A. The Olympic movement was popularised in India and in 1923 first Indian olympic games were held and India sent 8 competitors in 1924 Olympic games at Paris. In 1927 Indian Olympic Association (I.O.A.) was formed with effort of dr.A.G.Noehren and Mr. H.C. Buck . Mr. Daribi Tata was its first president with Dr. D.G. Noehren its secretary and G.D. Sondhi as Assistant secretary. Since then Indian Olympic Association has been functioning in India and is affiliated with International Olympic Committee.
  • 7.  The Indian Olympic association was formed with the following objectives.  1. To develop and protect the olympic movement and amature sports.  2. To promote and encourage physical, moral and cultural education of youth of the nation for the development of character, good health and good citizenship.  3. To enforce all rules and regulation of International Olympic Committee.  4. To enforce and defend the exclusive right of association to the use of Olympic flage and Olympic insignia confining their use and as for as possible, that the words “Olympic” and “Olympiad” to effective concerning the olympic games.
  • 8.  5. To be an official organisation in complete and sole charge of all Olympic matters in the country.  6. To educate the people of the country as to the value of maturism in sports.  7. In co-operation with National sport Federations /Associations to guard and enforce armatures rules.  8. To maintain the highest ideals of amateurism and to promote interest there, particularly in connection with the Olympic games and other games under the patronage of the I.O.C.  9. To have Full and complete jurisdiction over all matters pertaining to the participation of India in Olympic games and other games under the patronage of I.O.C.  10. In co-operation with national sports federations/ Associations to organise and control the teams that will represent India in Olympic games and other games under the patronage of the I.O.C.  11. To undertake with assistance of National sports federations/associations the financial management, transportation, maintenance and welfare of teams from India taking part in the Olympic games and other games under the patronage of the I.O.C.
  • 9.  12. To certify the amateur status of competitors from India for such International competition require such certification.  13. To stimulate the interest of the people of the country in the promotion of sports and games in Olympic programme and to that end the formation of the state Olympic association for development of sports and games within a state and National Amateur Sports Federation for sports and games in the Olympic programme.  14. To act as the channel of communication between National Sports Federation and Govt. Of India for financial or other Assistance to the Federation.  15. To admit the membership of State Olympic Association and National Amateur Sports Federation which shall be required to submit their annual reports and audited statement of accounts to the I.O.A for information.  16. To take disciplinary action against any federation for misbehaviour to any other undesirable activity bringing discredit to the country.  17. To do all other things that may be necessary or expeditious to promote the development of amateur sports and games in the country and for the conduct of its business.
  • 10.  There shall be election of the office bearers once in every four years to elect the following:-  Executive Council  1. A President  2. Seven vice president  3. A Secretary General  4. Two Joint Secretaries  5. One Honorary Treasurer  6. Five members elected from among the representative of State Olympic Association.  7. Nine members elected among the representative of National Federations/Associations/S.S.C.B.( Service Sports Control Board)  The office bearers of the association will hold others for one term of four years and may be eligible for re-election for a life term of period. No such office bearers shall hold office consecutively for more than two terms or eight years.
