The marathon is an endurance race over 42.195 km that originated from the legend of Pheidippides announcing the Greek victory over the Persians in 490 BC. It became an Olympic event in 1896 and the distance was standardized in 1921. Over 800 marathons are held worldwide each year, with most participants running as amateurs for charity or personal enjoyment. Proper training over 3-6 months and suitable running equipment can help experienced and beginner marathoners alike to successfully complete the race.
