What are hashtags?
As defined by Twitter:

“The # symbol, called a
hashtag, is used to mark
keywords or topics in a
Tweet. It was created
Organically by Twitter
users as a way to
categorize messages.”

How is Google adding hashtags to search?
When you search for a hashtag, for example:
‘#Fishing,’ you will get regular results in the SERPS
(search engine results pages) and posts from
Google+ alongside.

and is now the one signal identifier across all major
social networks, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest,
Instagram etc.

People are now using hashtags more frequently to
search via Google. The ability to search using
hashtags on Google is another way to further bring
content relevance to SERPS (search engine results pages).

Thoughts from our Head of SEO & Social

"hashtags have become a permanent fixture in social media. Initially a Twittercraze, the other major players have since caved. Facebook and now Google
have implemented them into their algorithms and content. Importantly,
hashtags are not keywords and need a completely different approach. They
grow through promotion and memes and thus, usually have a much shorter
shelf-life. They need a unique approach, centered on timeliness, audience
targeting and as ever, truly engaging content."
