Western Prosperity Fail
According to Deirdre McCloskey, why do some of the traditional explanations for Western
prosperity fail: The reason that explanations of western prosperity fail is because they aren t
true. One of the most traditional explanations is that the west profited and was built on slavery.
This cannot be the case because everywhere else in the world had slaves, slavery was not a
western invention. Another explanation is that the west had more resources (particularly coal)
gave it the power to produce more. This is false as well. You would expect place like Japan to be a
wasteland and third world country because of it lack of resources, but I fact Japan is one of the
wealthiest countries in the world. By the same logic Africa should be the most prosperous

The Dragon Who We Soon Discover
I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience
with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found
in the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge
of the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the
literary devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only
familiarizes students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters
an opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single
masterpiece.
To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn
of the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the
dragon has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years
and we have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of
wealth. At this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by
stealing a gem studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and
so proceeds the tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was
escaping the chains of slavery he unknowingly stumbled upon the lair, by chance finding himself
amid the

Percy Jackson Character Analysis
In Percy Jackson the character faces 4 hard missions that seems impossible but
eventually completes it with courage and dedication. In Nanabush the character presents tricks
and courage by entering the serpents territory and tricking them by thinking he is a one of the
serpents. Also in Good mind it shows dedication because Good mind works really hard on
recreating the world and making the earth a better place for animals. In the myths of Percy
Jackson , Nanabush and Iroquois creation story , the hero s share common traits of courage
and dedication. These traits help them succeed in their respective missions. In order for the

In order for Nanabush to help avenge his brother seeing as he is outnumbered and
cannot easily pass into the serpent s home. Therefore Nanabush s trickery of serpents shows
how he can avenge his brother.Percy Jackson is courageous in collecting pearls in order to
reach Hades. Percy Jackson Also collects the pearls because he uses the pearls to escape
after defeating Hades. Distract that thing! I ll get the pearl Percy is talking to his teammates
telling them to distract the dragon because he is going to get the pearls, he is not leaving
without getting the pearl because in order to escape hades he has to get the pearl. Once he got
the pearl he tells his teammates to go because he cares about them and he won t leave his
teammates behind. Percy Jackson is showing courage when he gets the pearl because the
dragon wants to stop Percy Jackson and kill him because they think he has the lighting bolt.
However, Percy Jackson faces the dragon and leaps him at bay. By getting the pearl and almost
getting killed by the dragon, he just risked his life by doing that. Him and his teammate killed the
dragon and escaped, which shows that he is brave and will not stop until he completes his
mission. This passage relates to the ability to complete a mission that seems impossible
because percy jackson has to collect 3 pearls because each pearl is guarded by a villain. He is
collecting the pearls because he is going to try to save his mother

The Summer Reading Assignment Mindset
When I first read the email about the summer reading assignment Mindset, my expectations
about what the book would be about completely differed from what it actually was. My thoughts
were that it would only pertain to school and how to stay positive while going through college.
After just five pages, I realized this books usefulness would stay with me for my entire life.
When introduced to the fixed and growth based mindsets, I felt as though the growth based
mindset defined my academic career that allowed me to get into college, while the fixed mindset
sadly resonates in my social life. Around the end of the first chapter, Dweck brings up four
questions that pertain to how easily intelligence can be changed or if it is fixed your entire... Show

I thought of myself as high and almost almighty when compared to other students that actually
had to study to be successful. In my own eyes, back three years ago, I thought that you could
only be successful from intelligence you were born with. This superior way thinking changed
suddenly when test grades started to plummet due to my lack of studying. I had just started
getting information from schools along with grade point average and standardized testing
requirements. Seeing that D for the semester made my failure into an example of what not
devolve back into. Dweck aced this chapter, as it was almost an exact timeline of this class. I
realized that studying and putting effort into my work did not make me a lower person then those
around me. When I realized this, the grades in all of my classes began to rise and so did my
confidence for my future in school after high school. Previous to the events that occurred in the
Advanced Placement class junior year, my mindset in school was fixed to the millionth degree. The
reasoning for this was my placement into the gifted program in elementary school that inflated my
ignorance and arrogance. The gifted instructors would praise the gifted student to no end, making
us strive for nothing greater, as we thought that we had already achieved as high as possible. This
positive praise clouded my thinking into

United States And International Asylum System
The principles of protection stated under Article 33(1) of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status
of Refugees requires refugees to gain access to a state s territory in order to exercise their rights to
claim asylum. In order to deter asylum seekers, EU Member States have begun adopting restrictive
national asylum systems. National asylum systems undermine burden sharing initiatives due to
regional differences. National policy harmonization is an approach to achieve a more equitable
distribution of burdens among Member States, but the lack of cooperation between entry point
states, transit states, and destination states has resulted in policies committed to deterring refugees
and asylum seekers, rather than aimed at their protection.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In 2015, hot spot relocation centres were set up in high concentration regions in order to assist
with registration, identification, fingerprinting and to debrief asylum seekers (Hassell 2). Asylum
systems in entry point states have become overwhelmed to the point where it has affected
receptions and processing conditions. The number of arrivals coupled with a lack of existing
mechanisms to mitigate resources has led to a deterioration of conditions in these regions (Hassell
8). Entry point states desire EU burden sharing mechanisms in order to alleviate the strain that
migrants place on state systems. Member States that are not in the direct path for receiving and
hosting migrants do not want to contribute to this burden, especially when they have nothing to
gain. Regrettably, there is an exception to the Dublin Regulation; Dublin transfers enable asylum
seekers who move on to other countries after being registered to be sent back to the responsible
entry point state to be processed. Dublin transfers increase pressures on entry point states in terms
of hosting more asylum seekers. Germany has recently dismissed the Dublin Regulation and has
continued to process asylum applications, regardless of the applicant s entry state. Dublin transfers
are similar to the concept of non refoulement, in which states are not to expel or send back
(refouler) refugees to countries where their life or liberty would

Roughnecks And The Saints Essay
Our society has lived around giving people nicknames, labels or titles. Schools specifically can
be a spot where these labels have been detrimental on a person s view of themselves. Labeling or
stigmatizing is when someone uses a label or nickname to degrade someone who is considered
different. Insults and jokes can enforce these labels. People who are different can be labeled
something which may make them feel more insignificant about themselves, and if these labels are
repeated the person may even come to believe the label. In the case of the Saints and the
Roughnecks it was the citizens who stigmatized these teenagers to the point where the kids were

the students by the community was in fact the Roughnecks and the Saints. Though the Roughnecks
did not seem to have a label variation, it was clear that the Saints were not as perfect as the
community believed them to be. The main reason for this variation is deception.
The Saints hid many of their reckless acts and while around the community they put on faces which
would make them seem like the best of men. The perception of the community was that of young
men who did well in school and sports, even though they had their fun, and were the models of
every day students. With this fake perception the Saints could get away with more acts including
cheating on tests or speeding through a stop sign. Police officers, teachers and more only wanted
obedience from these students. The students though seemly giving obedience in fact used deception

came a thunderbolt hit as well. A thunderbolt is something that is beyond our control, a
phenomenon that one day strikes your team/business. The thunderbolt that hindered the Lakers was
the injury bug. The Lakers lost their Rookie of the Year James Worthy, the defensive anchor Bob
McAdoo, and their lights out shooter Norm Nixon. After losing three key role players, it is easy
for a team to feel sympathetic in the midst of a title run. But sympathy is the junk food of the soul,
it contains nothing uplifting and ultimately is a negative emotion. A winning team prepares itself
for the adversity it is certain to encounter along the way to success. Adversity should almost be
welcomed because it forces the team to remain uncomfortable, which is when the most growth is

The Most Valuable Lessons Learned In Leadership
What is the most valuable lesson you have learned in a leadership role?
Leadership roles have taught me many things throughout my primary school education. I have had
a few leadership roles throughout my education including New Tech Ambassadors and National
Honors Society. The most valuable lessons I have learned include that of patience, persistence, and
austerity. I have learned that people need you to continue and press them and continue to help and
lead; to be persistent in your leadership helps those who follow you. Leadership has taught me to
have patience. Though, not to be lax. You must still be persistent. Lastly, to be respected as a leader
it is best to be stern but still approachable. An austere presence helps lead the best teams throughout
tough situations.

Apollo 13 Successful Failure
Apollo 13 the Successful Failure
How did the failure of Apollo 13 actually help NASA in some ways? Well by the end of this
paper it will show how and why the failure led to later success for NASA(National Aeronautics
and Space Administration). Apollo 13 was an interesting exploration for many reasons, and today
this paper will be showing how and why it was. First, the paper will teach about all of astronauts
in space, and the people back on Earth communicating with the crew, and all of the different
responsibilities this mission involved. It will also include what experiences they had previous to
their Apollo 13 journey, and how much time they have spent in space previous to Apollo 13.

Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission, and the third mission intended on going to the moon.
Apollo 13 was launched on April 11, 1970 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. (Dunbar,
Brian) Previous to the launch, ground tests indicated poorly insulated helium tanks. After two
days in flight, the crew began to worry. Okay, Houston. We ve had a problem here. (Space
Quotes) The Apollo 13 movie changed Swigert s famous Houston, we ve had a problem here to
Houston we have a problem here coming from James Lovell instead of John Swigert. 200,000
miles from Earth, on April 13, a low pressure warning on the hydrogen tank appeared. Knowing
there was danger to be, the crew did the cryo stir procedure. The procedure was to stop the gas
from settling into layers. Slowly running out of power and water big concerns began to worry
the crew. With no source of heat, cabin temperatures became freezing for the crew. Also with the
freezing temperatures, some food became inedible for the crew. The astronauts left the command
module section of the spacecraft and used the lunar module as a lifeboat. With the descending
spacecraft, Apollo 13 was unable to land on the moon, it was forced to circle it due to an
explosion on board. Even though it did not get to land, Apollo 13 reached 248, 655 miles from
Earth, marking the farthest humans have traveled from Earth at that time. (BBC News) The Fra

The Germ Theory
In the light of the germ theory...[d]jseases are to be considered as a struggle between the organism
and the parasites invading it. The aforementioned quote, by Henry Gandle, a professor of
physiology at Chicago Medical College, characterizes the germ theory through the collective human
struggle against disease inducing microorganisms. In a period of discovery, where the nature of
various germs and diseases were brought to light, the common conception encompassed a war
between humans and diseases; this analogy to a war implicates a united effort on the part of the
human race in battling these dangerous microorganisms. Tomes writes in The Gospel of Germs not

In the Southwood Smith excerpt, he depicts the ideal method of quarantine as influenced by neither
ancient prejudices, nor an excess of anxiety to avert possible danger, should induce the continuance
of restrictions inessential to their object. In other words, Southwood Smith acknowledges not only
the active societal biases, but also that these partialities can enter the medical realm through
prejudicial treatment of disease. A society with such prominent discrimination, including in those
with medical clout, has the capacity to formulate racial and class bias in germ theory that is but
an extension of already existing anxieties concerning other less well off members of society.
Rather than bringing people together in response to the fear of disease, quarantine had the capacity
to create a more segregated society praying on the middle and upper class fears of disease

How Does Technology Change The World Changing Technology...
In 2013, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Massachusetts General Hospital
(Mass. General) teamed up to change the world. They developed new technology that would not
only take more detailed x ray images, but also take images of soft tissue that would not have to
be enhanced with some form of contrast. This new technology could make x rays ubiquitous,
because of its higher resolution, the fact that the dose would be smaller and the hardware smaller,
cheaper, and more capable than current x rays , says Luis Velasquez Garcia, one of the main
research scientist of this technology at MIT. So how does this new world changing technology
work?
According to the developers, the key is in the coherent beam. The beam is reduced to a micro
sized point source instead of the systems that we have today, which are large points. These micro
sized point sources, which emit a beam of electrons individually, pass through a micro structured
plate that emits a beam of x ray , aka image receptor. In layman teams they are redeveloping the
cathode component of an x ray machine, to be able operate to with an optimized cathode chip .
With the prototype that the two research teams have invented so far, they have been able to
capture high resolution absorption images of samples where fine soft tissue structures are clearly
visible . This may sound like a great change the world technology but it is not without its pros and
cons.

Advantages Of Arranged Marriages
I didn t want to disappear into a forced marriage. I wanted my freedom Sabatina James. One of
today s societal norms is having the choice to marry who you desire. The long age tradition of
having arranged marriages in other countries and even in cultures in america today, arranged
marriages have different meanings and circumstances. Some countries like China and India have
modernized their tradition of arranged marriages, while other countries still use arranged marriages
for wealth and status in society. Are arranged marriages more effective to keep couple s together?
Divorce rates in America have reached a high of 40 to 50 percent. Arranged marriages in today s
era, even in America, is based on the foundation of wanting to find someone to love and have
given up on finding someone themselves, or have let their parents set up an arrangement with
another person to possibly marry. The difference with older traditions and modern arranged
marriages is the purpose. Modern arranged marriages are set up on the foundation of finding the
perfect match but the the pair can decide if they actually want to get married or not, however,
older traditions did not allow the rejection of a spouse. A muslim couple in America had an
arranged marriage, they didn t want an arranged marriage at first but, they let their parents intervene
and arrange a set up because that was traditional of their culture.
Theirs was a match with an American twist. They got to meet each other first and see if

The Culture Of The Caribbean Culture And The Haitian...
Caribbean Culture and the Haitian Revolution The history and origins of Caribbean society and
culture are hugely important in understanding how the Caribbean is what it is today. The
struggles that colored people faced and their revolts to end slavery should not go unnoticed. The
readings by Knight, Ulysse, and Brereton, as well as the film Egalite for All, touch on most
aspects of Caribbean culture, including the Haitian revolution. The film, Pirates of the
Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, failed to include anything about Caribbean culture and
society, the biggest being slaves. Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most well known films in
the business. Altogether, the franchise has totaled billions. The same cannot be said for Egalite
for All, although most people studying anthropology would argue that Egalite for All is a more
accurate film representing the struggles of slaves and Caribbean culture. The reason Pirates of
the Caribbean is a more well known film is because it was made for a broader audience. The
audience being teenagers and even adults. It is action packed with fights, but also has small side
stories that the audience wants to see, like romances. Egalite for All is a factual film, showing real
struggles and what the colored people did to overcome these struggles. This has a very specific
audience, people who study anthropology and are interested in learning about the Haitian
revolution. Pirates of the Caribbean was about just that, pirates. It

A Comparison Of The Bachelor And The Bachelorette Franchise
If there was a topic that I was an expert in, it would be The Bachelor and The Bachelorette
franchise, and that is exactly what it is, a franchise. I have watched the shows since I was a little
girl, I remember watching them with my mother at a young age and now I watch them with my

show for entertainment or so they believe, but studies have shown that it perpetrates the way that
people think about loveand life. Although, they do get entertainment from it, often people will leave
the show feeling entertained, amused, cheered up, or stimulated. (ARTICLE)
Some background information on the show, The Bachelorette; it is based off of the show The
Bachelor. The concept of the show centers around one woman finding love within a group of 25
suitors. A season typically only lasts 7 or 8 episodes, which is normally filmed over a span of 3
months. The first episode is primarily introducing the different men to the woman, with her only
learning their names and a few things about each of them. Throughout the middle of the season,
she will go on group dates and individual dates with all of the men. Each week she gives out roses
to the men that she would like to keep around and further develop relationships with. In the last
episode, there are 2 men remaining. They will meet her family and go on one final date. On the last

Theories Of Employee Retention

the workforce. That issue is simply put is employee retention. With so many at will employment
options out there, fierce competition amongst business and those businesses looking to operate

ourselves how do we combat this issue? This issue is a very complex one here in America because

Fourth would be how to overcome low motivation. With these factors, ideas of how to communicate
the plan within the organization must be implemented. The Sheriff has hired an expert advisor in
the field of Effective law enforcement organizational planning when understaffed to achieve the
aforementioned. For the purpose of this paper let s say that I will be this expert.
One of the key factors for retention strategy and hiring of new employees goes far and beyond a
competitive benefits package and salary. However the latter is very much so important and
would need to be addressed. After brief study of surrounding law enforcement agencies I have
come to the conclusion that MCSO is behind a little when it comes to compensation and benefits.
The neighboring county of Palm Beach has a starting salary of $47,220 for law enforcement
positions (Sentinel, A. R. 2014). This is approximately a full $7,000 more than MCSO s starting
salary. Not to mention the Fire Department within Martin County has a starting salary around
$48,000. In my professional opinion public service is public service and both the fire department
and sheriff s office fall under this umbrella. There needs to be more parity here because it seems to
be a common complaint amongst the employees of the sheriff s office which negatively affects
motivation and morale.
Research suggest that employees rank recognition, flexibility and training as top priorities for

Vimy Ridge Patriotism
Vimy Ridge is a notable moment because it brought world recognition, a strong sense of
patriotism, and became a nationalist symbol of achievement and sacrifice. It marks the first time a
battle was planned and executed strategically rather than strictly by manpower. They showed the
Allies that they had the strength and ability to carry out a flawless attack of this size, in which
they succeeded in April 1917 (Christie 7). The German position on the ridge seemed invincible.
Because of Vimy Ridge, Currie became a respected strategist while the Canadians became

Hip Hop And Education
Yes, this article is based on a qualitative study. The method included instructional experiences with
elementary aged students in settings from varied geographic locations, such as: Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia. Bettina Love writes to dispel the myth that
Hip Hop should not have a place in instructional learning. Additionally, she proved that Hip Hop
extends beyond Black culture, by impacting the ways Latinas/Latinos, Indigenous Americans, Asian
Americans, and Pacific Islander Americans learn. By referencing the works of Jean Lave and
Г‰tienne Wenger, Love highlights that community strongly influences learning and identities in
early stages of life, especially for children who grow up in Hip Hop communities.... Show more

However, by referencing Rogoff and intent and guided participation, Bettina Love demonstrates
sound knowledge of sociocultural theory, the need to include the cultures and experiences of
children in a curriculum. She takes a stance to show that the musical form incites children to
concentrate and listen, while also encouraging educators to guide learning. The powerful
verbiage she uses to advocate for HHBE is capable of convincing the most skeptic person. Not
only does her problem statement emphasize that children do not have opportunities to share their
funds of knowledge, Love also shows knowledge in the area of child development, referencing
Piaget and Vygotsky for their common notion of how play is important for cognitive development;
hence, children in Love s classrooms are evolving cognitively by learning dances through rhythmic
play. After I read the article, I enjoyed how Love named television programs like Sesame Street for
featuring Hip Hop artists, and used a list of successful individuals in the Hip Hop community that
show positive contributions to society, such as LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, Russell Simmons, and

Reaction Time Lab
In this lab, the team concluded that being distracted with an activity that diverts optical attention
away from the focal point, such as texting, significantly increases reaction time. The other
distractors, including listening to music and talking on a cell phone, had effectively no impact on
reaction time in comparison to having no distraction.
In order convert the distance the meter stick fell into the given unit of time (seconds or hours), the
time equation shown in the sample calculation was used. This equation directly found the reaction
time in seconds, which allowed the team to calculate the reaction time in hours. Dimensional
analysis was used to convert seconds to hours, which resulted in extraordinarily small quantities that
warranted the use of scientific notation.
From there, the team had to determine in each case how far a car traveling at 60 miles per hour
would travel before brakes would be applied. To do this, the team used the equation v=d/t to find
distance, and thus rewriting it as d=vt. This equation determined the distance in miles, prompting
the team to again use dimensional analysis to find the distance in feet.
The data that was tested without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reaction time was constant while listening to music, and was actually .01s shorter while talking
on a cell phone. Texting, however, left both partners completely incapable of catching the meter
stick at all, which only begins to demonstrate the danger of texting while driving. In a real world
situation, you would travel a whopping 38.01ft before applying the breaks (at 60mph), which is
much longer than the 12.03ft you would travel without distraction. Using that data, it was
concluded that the only distractor that had a substantial effect on reaction time was

My First Day At The Beach Essay
My first swim without safety armbands
Wake up, wake up you lazy kids my mum said, we are going to the beach . My sister, my two
brothers, and I woke with extreme energy, happy because it was the first time we visit the beach
that summer. The day dawned bright, the sky was painted in bright blue; the beautiful sun was
gleaming and shining gloriously. It was idyllic for a picnic by the sea. We quickly packed our
stuff, we took some snacks and swimming outfits, and of course chair decks; we took a fast
breakfast, and then we headed to the beach. I was very excited because it was my first summer
without the safety armbands. However, I knew that it was going to be a bit of scary and risky but

my mouth. The waves were pulling my small fragile body to the deep sea world. I was losing the
ability to swim, and I started swallowing salty water that burned my throat (turned my throat on

despair my life fading away from me. I was filled with dread because I was too small to die, and I
wanted to see my family again. For a moment, I was convinced that I will not have the
opportunity to discover the adventures of life. The sorrowful good byes of life continued for
several minutes before a lifeguard sent from heaven saved me. He put me on his shoulders, and

Playing Piano Benefits
Studying and playing piano does provide powerfully positive effects on the brain. Anyone who
learns and or plays piano can experience these benefits. The benefits range from: improved hand
eye coordination, better Intelligence Quotient (IQ) scores (these results were on children), higher
self esteem, reduced anxiety, lower levels of stress, and less periods of depression. People who play
pianoalso have a lot of enthusiasm, dexterity, and reading tone. According to First Tutors and the
article titled The Neurological Benefits of Learning Music, these benefits and effects are
inarguable as they are supported by a multitude of studies. Of chief concern in many studies are
the effects that playing piano has on the brain and its development this includes the outcomes of
practicing or taking piano lessons. As a result of all this inquiry and observation, it is clear that
piano positively benefits everyone of all ages. These benefits will be discussed in greater detail
followed by a conclusion summarizing the most important impacts that playing the piano has on a
person s brain.
While a person s intelligence quotient is not a measure of one s full intellectual capabilities,
consider for example that there are studies that have shown that playing piano can increase the IQ
average of a person by about seven points. This benefit is cited in an article entitled The
Neurological Benefits of Learning Music found on The First Tutors website. Despite the fact that

She sees Clay, who was the only person on the subway at the time, looking at her through the
window. She takes that as a seductive invitation and boards the subway. She approaches him and is
very forward with him as they converse and eat apples. During their conversation, Lula attempts to
be alluring, mysterious, and at times, standoffish.
After becoming more acquainted with one another, Clay realizes other passengers have boarded.
He becomes uncomfortable and less intimate with Lula. Eventually, Lula s actions become more
peculiar to Clay. She begins offending and embarrassing him. He chases her around the subway
train, then snaps, yelling and cursing. As he takes his leave, Lula stabs him and several male
passengers carry his corpse away.
Since Dutchman was written in 1963, the play was heavily influenced by the Civil Rights
Movement and racism is a reoccurring theme. Baraka lived with a white woman in a
predominately Caucasian community, and he d felt as though he was not being true to himself.
That was where he got the inspiration for Clay s character. It is often pointed out in the film by
Lula that Clay is acting like a white man and is pretensions for that. She sees him as a stereotype,
constantly commenting I know the type (Dutchman). I assume she doesn t actually knows the type,
but instead she know the stereotypes associated with African American male. Through this
knowledge, she is able guess certain details of Clay s life. She constantly

Victor... Creator or Destroyer Victor Frankenstein worried about everyone else and playing God,

create the monster. After the creation of the monster, everyone including Victor abandoned him.
Victor refused to create a girl creature to avoid a lot of problems, but he did not realize the hell the
monster would end up causing him. Victor regrets trying to play God because his action would
cause him great troubles and consequences. Victor Frankensteinhad the great idea of creating a

The process and steps took a lot longer than what Victor predicted. When the creature finally

Although, Jesus saved people because it was a duty imposed upon him by his father. Elmer
Gantry however, had a different reason for preaching the word of the lord. Elmer found it
convenient to preach about the lord when he knew he could get something in return. He had no
ulterior motive than to use the words in the Bible to his advantage to gain something for him. In
the film, Elmer sees a good thing in Sister Sharon Falconer s evangelical troupe and cons his way
into her tent tabernacle, her graces, and her heart (Weiler, 1960). Elmer used the Bible to get
closer to and ultimately to win over Sister Sharon. Elmer Gantry was an opportunistic character.
He used religion when it could benefit him. Not only was Gantry opportunistic about religion,
but was opportunistic when it came to sex and alcohol as well (Bluestone, 1961). Many people
can relate to a character such as Elmer Gantry. When the opportunity arises for something to go
in his favor, he grabs the opportunity. Many people may feel the same way today. If an
opportunity arises to get something for yourself, you will. Elmer is an ordinary person with
ordinary impulses. He sees Sister Sharon as something he desires and works his way into her
inner circle to be closer to her. An ordinary man would do something similar to be closer to a
woman he finds attractive. Both characters had very different reasons for selling religion, but both
were extremely successful.

Ireland In 1494
In its strenuous efforts to subject Ireland to English Rule, the English government strategized on
how to most effectively surrender the Irish people to its supreme governance. One of the most
influential if not destructive methods was the implementation of Poynings Law in 1494, which
under its terms maintained that all Irish Bills be submitted by the English chief governor in Ireland
to the King and Privy Council by way of the English Parliament. Only Bills that were subsequently
approved and returned to Ireland under the Great Seal of Englandcould be presented to the Irish
parliament. The purpose of this bill followed a number of other direct changes to Ireland that
stemmed from King Henry II and King Henry VIII and their momentous wish to rescue Ireland
from the decades of neglect England had subjugated the state collectively to, up until the sixteenth
century. The original purpose of the passage of the law in 1494 had been to to curb the
independence of Ireland s Anglo Norman chief governors. However, it became most destructive

Similarities Between The New England, The Middle Colonies...
In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed to find the Indies, but instead he found an undiscovered
continent which would soon be called the New World. The New World was full of fresh
possibilities, promises of treasures, and religious freedom; it was a place that could be called
home. After years of conquest and settling, four regions came about on the East Coast of North
America: New England, the Middle Colonies, the Southern Colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies.
The colonists had their similarities such as that they were ruled by England, though their
government was the majority self governed, they were mostly Protestants who did not agree with
the Roman Catholic Church, they had the same culture, and there was some religious tolerance.
Despite these similarities, they were still quite different. The New England region contained two
combined colonies. There was Massachusettsand Rhode Island, made to be the Massachusetts Bay
Colony. This colony began with settlers differing from religious norm. The religion was mainly
Puritan, those who wanted to get rid of Catholicism from the Church of England. On the other hand,
the Toleration Act, declared in 1649, and made by Parliament towards New England, forced their
tolerance of other religions. Despite that tolerance, the Puritans were still reluctant to accept the
other religions causing colonists of those religions to travel to further west for their own religious
freedom. The Massachusetts Bay Colony s economy relied on fishing,

What Is The Importance Of African Music
Spencer Rubinoff
History of Africa
12/4/17
African Music
African Music Traditionally, music has played a very important role in Africa s culture and history.
If you observe any part of the culture you can see that music is essential in representing their
heritage. Unlike most cultures today, ancient African cultures brought music into their lives every
day. Music also helps with African story telling, dance, and even religious practices. Music is
especially important for African dance because in some cultures there is not even a spoken
language, they tell their stories through songs and dance. When discussing the impact of music in
Africa it is important to also mention the power of dance as well.
In the African culture, music and dance mean so much more than just something done for a good
time, it has a much greater purpose. In the African culture, a dance is usually done by a group and
usually for a specific purpose. That being said, having a group of people means that these tribes run
with utilitarianism. The idea of Utilitarianism suggests that the value of a thing depends on its use,
and not its beauty. In many ways, African music is a utilitarian function used in vital aspects of life
such as, a child s naming ceremony (The Importance of Music in the African Culture: More Than
Just a song). This list could also include initiation rites, agricultural activities, national ceremonies,
war times, religious ceremonies and ceremonies for the dead. Indigenous tribe s

The Middle East State System
Course overview
This course aims to educate students regarding the modern (post 1970) trajectory of US foreign
policy in regards the Middle East, and how such policy has influenced the Middle East state
system. Both in recent history and presently, the US role in the region has been pivotal in shaping
the regional system as well as ensuring the stability of the regional status quo. The various interests
that drive US foreign policy in the region will be examined.
The US, of course, does not implement its foreign policy in a void, and therefore gaining a
background on the regional state and non state actors that the US must grapple with is vital. The
regional dynamics which affected the US position in the region, such as the Arab Spring, also must
be accounted for in any thorough description of the formulation of US policy.
To account for these factors, the course utilizes both a chronological approach to the historical
development of US foreign policy toward the region, as well as including substantial background on
the important regional actors with which the US interacts with. Finally, it includes a select few
readings related to theoretical concepts in International Relations to provide a context for analysis
of policy. All these elements should grant students a well rounded comprehension of the various
factors which influence the Middle East state system and related US foreign policy.
Through this course, students should gain a fuller understanding of the role that the

In today s society this media becomes viral at its full effect on social media platforms, most
specifically twitter and facebook as with one post or retweet can cause a chain reaction to even
further distribute the content to expand the audience. Virality is often achieved due to its power
to evoke emotions in a visceral way as well as tell us whole stories in a fraction of the time
reading text would take. ( The Social Media Wildfire. ) The concept of viral media is not
subjected to only a certain group of people but is rather extended to others even if they are not
on social media as in many cases videos that have made it onto international news channels.
What makes viral videos viral does not exclude anyone but is rather meant for a large audience
due to it being known for breaking down cultural barriers by allowing people all over the world
to witness significant or interesting events for themselves. ( The Social Media Wildfire,. 2015)
With this viral media revolution, many people see it as a chance to change their lives, socially,
but viral fame is most notably connected to a new financials status as well. By seeing other
people go viral it would start this belief that by going viral, you have made it, which creates this
sense of achievement in regards to their social life. There have been plenty of good and bad

he perpetuation of human sex trafficking and the rising numbers of trafficked victims is also linked
to Thailand s weak government. The combination of widespread corruption among government

(Gugic,2014365). This lack of enforcement allows traffickers and brothel owners to avoid
punishment by the government. For example, petty spas in Thailand open for the purpose of

There is evidence that both low and high level police officers are involved in the facilitation of
human sex trafficking (Niamvanichkul,2013,41). Officers have been known to accept bribes for
favors, like knowingly letting brothel owners operate despite the fact that prostitution is illegal
in Thailand (Troubnikoff, 2003,135). For example, In Mai Sai, brothels have been known to
pay police every month for each girl who is brought in or in order to avoid police raids (Obokata,
2006,54). Back in 2003, fifty police officers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Department
were taken off active duty for accepting bribes from brothel owners (Obokata, 2006,54). Some
police officers even participate in the actual trafficking of girls, like transporting women from
Myanmar to brothels within Thailand (Obokata, 2005, 54). In these instances, trafficking victims
are being exploited by not only their employers but also by the police (Gugic, 2014, 366). Thai
police officers are paid low salaries, which makes them more likely to turn to bribery and
corruption (Tarancon, 2013, 72). Even politicians and political parties have been known to take
proceeds from the sex industry, while using its services for free (Davy,2014,803;
Opanovych,2016,108). Human sex trafficking cases that involve Thai officials or law
enforcement often take a very lenient approach. In 2007, a police officer suspected of being
involved with sex trafficking was convicted, fined and fired, but no jail

It should be noted that some materials exhibit more than one of the above properties and It is
better to use them in combination with conventional material. Sensing Materials 1. Optical
Fibers: Fiber optic sensors with crack monitoring capability have been developed by Wolff and
Messelier (1992), Ansari et al (1993); Voss and Wanser (1994).It is also used to detect moisture
content. A sensor for moisture detection have been developed by Michie et al (1994). 2.
Piezoelectric materials: Piezoelectric materials have two unique properties which are
interrelated. When a piezoelectric material is deformed, it gives off a small but measurable
electrical material it experiences a significant increase in size (up to a 4% change in volume).
They are often used to measure fluid compositions, fluid density, fluid viscosity, or the force of an
impact. In stress and pressure sensing, the PVDF materials have been found to give a better
electrical response. Actuating Materials 1.Piezoelectric materials: A piezoceramic material can be
used as a strain sensor by taking advantage of the direct piezoelectric effect that converts a
mechanical action into an electric charge. But the same material can be also used for actuation
applications by using the converse piezoelectric effect that.converts an electrical field into a
mechanical strain. 2. Shape memory alloys: Shape memory alloys (SMA s) are

The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury
Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the
question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a
fireman, he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and
destroy illegal books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite.
Montag is prideful of his work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling.
Montag is the protagonist, although there are countless others who could have taken his place
as the protagonist; there were also others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the
one fireman that went against his ideals and changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse,
Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for the meaning of his existence. After
meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is very straightforward and clear
to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did other people s faces take
of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought?
(Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred that Clarisse
was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury 72).
Through his friendship with Clarisse McClellan, Montag recognizes how cruel society can be as
opposed to the joys of nature in which he rarely experiences. When Clarisse makes

The Philosophical Aspects Of The Abortion Debate
The philosophical aspects of the abortion debate form two logical arguments, which oppose and
support abortion. These arguments are based on what is ethical and the rights of an individual.
The view that abortion should be illegal rest on the moral right of the life of a human being at or
near conception killing an embryo is unjust since it violates the right to life (Hershenov 129).
Therefore, the law should prohibit violation of the right to life. The view that abortionshould be
legal, generally argues that women have the right to control what in their body. On the same note, it
explains that they have the right to control what happens on their body. In addition, it argues that
abortion is a just act and the law should not criminalise the act of controlling one s body and its life
support functions (English 234). Philosophical literature has to kinds of argument regarding the
moralityof abortion. One of the families of argument asks the question whether the embryo has the
right to life. It bases its argument on the moral status of the embryo and it would be wrong to kill an
innocent human being. In the matter concerning abortion, philosophical litterateur has two kind of
argument and this paper will tend to defend the abortion. Therefore, it will support Judith Jarvis
Thomson argument in relation to abortion. In other words, the paper will argue that it is just to
have an abortion.
Judith Jarvis Thomson wrote a moral philosophy paper known as A Defence of Abortion and

Punishment In The Monkey s Paw
In Louis N. Parker s play rendition of The Monkey s Paw, Mr. White s good friend Sergeant Major
Morris pays the White family a visit and introduces them to a cursed artifact called the Monkey s
Paw. He informs the family about how the cursed artifact grants wishes in an undesirable
method.Despite that Mr. White continues on to wishfor 200 pounds, in hopes of paying off their
rent. Nonetheless, the 200 pounds does arrive but comes in the form of compensation from
Herbert s death by machinery equipment at his workplace. However, the question still left
unanswered by the short story is, who s to blame for the sorrow and despair that took over the
White s? Is it the one who introduced the cursed paw, Sergeant Major Morris? The victim himself,...

White to rescue the paw from burning in the fire, but choosing to make a wish upon the paw was
the most irrational move that he could have made. Before he makes his first wish, it was noticed
that Mr. White was reluctant in using the paw. I believe he behaved in this manner because he
was reflecting upon the mentioned dangers and consequences that was conveyed to him by S.M
Morris and deciding whether it was worth the risk. He then proceeds to say, I wonder whether
we hadn t better chuck it in the fire?...(Holds up the paw, as if half ashamed) I wish for two
hundred pounds (Jacobs 126). The first half of the quote displays Mr. White doubting his choice
in saving the paw. I believe he behaved in this matter because it was a natural instinct for him to
feel this way given all the warnings and advice he had received against it. In the second half of
the quote, we witness Mr. White s greed cloud his common sense as he chooses to shamefully wish
for two hundred pounds despite knowing that there may be consequences in addition to his wish. I
believe that if Mr. White had thought through his actions better and did not wish upon the cursed
paw, the tragic death of his son would have never occurred. After all, it was this wish that tampered
with the White family s fate thus resulting in Herbert s

Mozart Classical Style Essay
Introduction:
In the classical period most people only described the 18th century music as classical music
(style) but it was carefully divided between 3 main styles namely the Gallante style, the
Empfindsam style and Sturm und Drang and finally the Classical style. Later during the 17th
century the music styles became more important and because of the large number of instrumental
players in the orchestra and most of the growth took place in the orchestra field. The first genre
that came to rise was the style gallant around the 1720s to the 1770s it was also known and
described as sophisticated and elegant (Burkholder, Grout Palisca 2010).
2 composers came to rise early in their lives during the Classical period, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

He started to compose them in a three movement form, but later he used the standard four
movements. According to Burkholder Mozart s symphonies served as models for the older
composers . (Burkholder, Grout Palisca 2010:559).What made Mozart and Haydn s symphonies
similar, they both were more serious in their music and with the complexity and the climatic ending
made Mozart s music more popular and in high demand for public concerts. The difference between
these two great composers was the fact that Haydn s finales left the audience with a more cheerful
mind than Mozart. (Gretchen:1991 and
String Quartet in E flat major, Op. 33, Russian, No. 2, Hob.III:38, Joke
Haydn was referred as the father of string quartets and this particular one, String quartet in E flat
major, Op.33, composed in 1781, shows great examples of all the different element he used in his
string quartets. The name, The Joke originated because of the fact that Haydn replaced the normal
minuet into a scherzo, which meant playfulness. (Gretchen:1991)
In this composition, he introduces the theme several times, which played in his advantage, because
it would help the audience remember the theme. And his dance like rhythm and pulse was regular
and he used abrupt changes in his meter, tempo and dynamics.

Views of Death and Loss in the Poems of Pablo Neruda and...
Death has inspired poets across time and space, language barriers, and cultures allowing them to
create transcendent works that resonate with many individuals. Two poets whose works
incorporate the theme of death are Dylan Thomas (1914 1953), a Welsh poet and writer, and
Pablo Neruda (1904 1973), a Chilean poet, diplomat, and politician. Thomas s Do Not Go Gentle
Into That Good Night, one of his most famous poems, focuses on Thomas s struggle to come to
terms with his father s death. Neruda s poem, The Dead Woman focuses on the poets resolve to
overcome the loss of the woman he loves. Both Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night and The
Dead Woman demonstrate how each poet views death and how he is able to come to terms with
the loss of a loved one.
Thomas wrote Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night shortly before his father s death. In the
poem, Thomas supplicates his father to fight against his instinct and desire to give in to death
through various appeals. Thomas argues, Old age should burn and rave at close of day (Thomas
2). Through this statement, Thomas maintains that despite one s age, there is a desire to fight
against death, whether because one is afraid to face the inevitable or because one wishes to live
as long as they can. Thomas provides his father with various examples of different types of men,
who despite their differences share a common goal. He describes how wise men who at their end
know dark is right, Good men, the last wave by, crying

  • 2. Western Prosperity Fail According to Deirdre McCloskey, why do some of the traditional explanations for Western prosperity fail: The reason that explanations of western prosperity fail is because they aren t true. One of the most traditional explanations is that the west profited and was built on slavery. This cannot be the case because everywhere else in the world had slaves, slavery was not a western invention. Another explanation is that the west had more resources (particularly coal) gave it the power to produce more. This is false as well. You would expect place like Japan to be a wasteland and third world country because of it lack of resources, but I fact Japan is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. By the same logic Africa should be the most prosperous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Dragon Who We Soon Discover I had qualms at first about how exactly to complete a task such as this, being that my experience with this type of writing is limited at best. However, I will confess there is much fun to be found in the fanciful wordplay. Not only are we asked to fill in a piece of the story, requiring knowledge of the plot line at this point in the story, but the task also prompts a deeper understanding of the literary devices and influences present in this style of writing. A task of this nature not only familiarizes students with both the plot line and the technical aspects of the writing, but also fosters an opportunity to incorporate creativity and merge all of these dynamic fragments into a single masterpiece. To begin, I considered the surrounding plot of the story. Just before the section begins we learn of the dragon who we soon discover is a major player in this epic tale. Thus far in the story the dragon has played a rather dormant role. Beowulf has been ruling the kingdom for over 50 years and we have heard not a single mention of the beast that sleeps as he guards his sparkly trove of wealth. At this point we are also introduced to an escaped slave who wakes the fiery beast by stealing a gem studded goblet from the lair. He claims that his thievery was in fact accidental, and so proceeds the tale of his misadventures in the earthen pit. His story recounts that as he was escaping the chains of slavery he unknowingly stumbled upon the lair, by chance finding himself amid the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Summer Reading Assignment Mindset When I first read the email about the summer reading assignment Mindset, my expectations about what the book would be about completely differed from what it actually was. My thoughts were that it would only pertain to school and how to stay positive while going through college. After just five pages, I realized this books usefulness would stay with me for my entire life. When introduced to the fixed and growth based mindsets, I felt as though the growth based mindset defined my academic career that allowed me to get into college, while the fixed mindset sadly resonates in my social life. I thought of myself as high and almost almighty when compared to other students that actually had to study to be successful. In my own eyes, back three years ago, I thought that you could only be successful from intelligence you were born with. This superior way thinking changed suddenly when test grades started to plummet due to my lack of studying. I had just started getting information from schools along with grade point average and standardized testing requirements. Seeing that D for the semester made my failure into an example of what not devolve back into. Dweck aced this chapter, as it was almost an exact timeline of this class. I realized that studying and putting effort into my work did not make me a lower person then those around me. When I realized this, the grades in all of my classes began to rise and so did my confidence for my future in school after high school. Previous to the events that occurred in the Advanced Placement class junior year, my mindset in school was fixed to the millionth degree. The reasoning for this was my placement into the gifted program in elementary school that inflated my ignorance and arrogance. The gifted instructors would praise the gifted student to no end, making us strive for nothing greater, as we thought that we had already achieved as high as possible. This positive praise clouded my thinking into ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. United States And International Asylum System The principles of protection stated under Article 33(1) of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees requires refugees to gain access to a state s territory in order to exercise their rights to claim asylum. In order to deter asylum seekers, EU Member States have begun adopting restrictive national asylum systems. National asylum systems undermine burden sharing initiatives due to regional differences. National policy harmonization is an approach to achieve a more equitable distribution of burdens among Member States, but the lack of cooperation between entry point states, transit states, and destination states has resulted in policies committed to deterring refugees and asylum seekers, rather than aimed at their protection.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 2015, hot spot relocation centres were set up in high concentration regions in order to assist with registration, identification, fingerprinting and to debrief asylum seekers (Hassell 2). Asylum systems in entry point states have become overwhelmed to the point where it has affected receptions and processing conditions. The number of arrivals coupled with a lack of existing mechanisms to mitigate resources has led to a deterioration of conditions in these regions (Hassell 8). Entry point states desire EU burden sharing mechanisms in order to alleviate the strain that migrants place on state systems. Member States that are not in the direct path for receiving and hosting migrants do not want to contribute to this burden, especially when they have nothing to gain. Regrettably, there is an exception to the Dublin Regulation; Dublin transfers enable asylum seekers who move on to other countries after being registered to be sent back to the responsible entry point state to be processed. Dublin transfers increase pressures on entry point states in terms of hosting more asylum seekers. Germany has recently dismissed the Dublin Regulation and has continued to process asylum applications, regardless of the applicant s entry state. Dublin transfers are similar to the concept of non refoulement, in which states are not to expel or send back (refouler) refugees to countries where their life or liberty would ... • 8. Roughnecks And The Saints Essay Our society has lived around giving people nicknames, labels or titles. Schools specifically can be a spot where these labels have been detrimental on a person s view of themselves. Labeling or stigmatizing is when someone uses a label or nickname to degrade someone who is considered different. Insults and jokes can enforce these labels. People who are different can be labeled something which may make them feel more insignificant about themselves, and if these labels are repeated the person may even come to believe the label. In the case of the Saints and the Roughnecks it was the citizens who stigmatized these teenagers to the point where the kids were they were not given any other future besides the one that follow what their label was. Though the Roughnecks did not seem to have a label variation, it was clear that the Saints were not as perfect as the community believed them to be. The main reason for this variation is deception. The Saints hid many of their reckless acts and while around the community they put on faces which would make them seem like the best of men. The perception of the community was that of young men who did well in school and sports, even though they had their fun, and were the models of every day students. With this fake perception the Saints could get away with more acts including cheating on tests or speeding through a stop sign. A thunderbolt is something that is beyond our control, a phenomenon that one day strikes your team/business. The thunderbolt that hindered the Lakers was the injury bug. The Lakers lost their Rookie of the Year James Worthy, the defensive anchor Bob McAdoo, and their lights out shooter Norm Nixon. After losing three key role players, it is easy for a team to feel sympathetic in the midst of a title run. But sympathy is the junk food of the soul, it contains nothing uplifting and ultimately is a negative emotion. A winning team prepares itself for the adversity it is certain to encounter along the way to success. Adversity should almost be welcomed because it forces the team to remain uncomfortable, which is when the most growth is seen. It is the combination of hardiness and ability to grasp context... In a period of discovery, where the nature of various germs and diseases were brought to light, the common conception encompassed a war between humans and diseases; this analogy to a war implicates a united effort on the part of the human race in battling these dangerous microorganisms. • 14. How Does Technology Change The World Changing Technology... In 2013, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass. General) teamed up to change the world. They developed new technology that would not only take more detailed x ray images, but also take images of soft tissue that would not have to be enhanced with some form of contrast. This new technology could make x rays ubiquitous, because of its higher resolution, the fact that the dose would be smaller and the hardware smaller, cheaper, and more capable than current x rays , says Luis Velasquez Garcia, one of the main research scientist of this technology at MIT. So how does this new world changing technology work? According to the developers, the key is in the coherent beam. The beam is reduced to a micro sized point source instead of the systems that we have today, which are large points. These micro sized point sources, which emit a beam of electrons individually, pass through a micro structured plate that emits a beam of x ray , aka image receptor. In layman teams they are redeveloping the cathode component of an x ray machine, to be able operate to with an optimized cathode chip . With the prototype that the two research teams have invented so far, they have been able to capture high resolution absorption images of samples where fine soft tissue structures are clearly visible . This may sound like a great change the world technology but it is not without its pros and cons. One pro that came to mind when reading the article ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some countries like China and India have modernized their tradition of arranged marriages, while other countries still use arranged marriages for wealth and status in society. Are arranged marriages more effective to keep couple s together? Divorce rates in America have reached a high of 40 to 50 percent. Arranged marriages in today s era, even in America, is based on the foundation of wanting to find someone to love and have given up on finding someone themselves, or have let their parents set up an arrangement with another person to possibly marry. The difference with older traditions and modern arranged marriages is the purpose. Modern arranged marriages are set up on the foundation of finding the perfect match but the the pair can decide if they actually want to get married or not, however, older traditions did not allow the rejection of a spouse. Caribbean Culture and the Haitian Revolution The history and origins of Caribbean society and culture are hugely important in understanding how the Caribbean is what it is today. The struggles that colored people faced and their revolts to end slavery should not go unnoticed. The readings by Knight, Ulysse, and Brereton, as well as the film Egalite for All, touch on most aspects of Caribbean culture, including the Haitian revolution. The film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, failed to include anything about Caribbean culture and society, the biggest being slaves. Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most well known films in the business. Altogether, the franchise has totaled billions. The same cannot be said for Egalite for All, although most people studying anthropology would argue that Egalite for All is a more accurate film representing the struggles of slaves and Caribbean culture. The reason Pirates of the Caribbean is a more well known film is because it was made for a broader audience. The audience being teenagers and even adults. It is action packed with fights, but also has small side stories that the audience wants to see, like romances. Egalite for All is a factual film, showing real struggles and what the colored people did to overcome these struggles. This has a very specific audience, people who study anthropology and are interested in learning about the Haitian revolution. Pirates of the Caribbean was about just that, pirates. It ... One of the key factors for retention strategy and hiring of new employees goes far and beyond a competitive benefits package and salary. However the latter is very much so important and would need to be addressed. After brief study of surrounding law enforcement agencies I have come to the conclusion that MCSO is behind a little when it comes to compensation and benefits. The neighboring county of Palm Beach has a starting salary of $47,220 for law enforcement positions (Sentinel, A. R. 2014). This is approximately a full $7,000 more than MCSO s starting salary. Not to mention the Fire Department within Martin County has a starting salary around $48,000. In my professional opinion public service is public service and both the fire department and sheriff s office fall under this umbrella. Reaction Time Lab In this lab, the team concluded that being distracted with an activity that diverts optical attention away from the focal point, such as texting, significantly increases reaction time. The other distractors, including listening to music and talking on a cell phone, had effectively no impact on reaction time in comparison to having no distraction. In order convert the distance the meter stick fell into the given unit of time (seconds or hours), the time equation shown in the sample calculation was used. This equation directly found the reaction time in seconds, which allowed the team to calculate the reaction time in hours. Dimensional analysis was used to convert seconds to hours, which resulted in extraordinarily small quantities that warranted the use of scientific notation. From there, the team had to determine in each case how far a car traveling at 60 miles per hour would travel before brakes would be applied. To do this, the team used the equation v=d/t to find distance, and thus rewriting it as d=vt. This equation determined the distance in miles, prompting the team to again use dimensional analysis to find the distance in feet. The data that was tested without ... What Is The Importance Of African Music Spencer Rubinoff History of Africa 12/4/17 African Music African Music Traditionally, music has played a very important role in Africa s culture and history. If you observe any part of the culture you can see that music is essential in representing their heritage. Unlike most cultures today, ancient African cultures brought music into their lives every day. Music also helps with African story telling, dance, and even religious practices. Music is especially important for African dance because in some cultures there is not even a spoken language, they tell their stories through songs and dance. When discussing the impact of music in Africa it is important to also mention the power of dance as well. In the African culture, music and dance mean so much more than just something done for a good time, it has a much greater purpose. In the African culture, a dance is usually done by a group and usually for a specific purpose. That being said, having a group of people means that these tribes run with utilitarianism. • 43. Prostitution Prevention And Prevention Act he perpetuation of human sex trafficking and the rising numbers of trafficked victims is also linked to Thailand s weak government. The combination of widespread corruption among government officials and the lack of enforcement of laws concerning the Thai sex industry has lead to the prominence of human sex trafficking. The 1996 ProstitutionPrevention and Prevention Act was implemented to punish pimps, procurers, brothel owners and customers, however; this law and many others designed to protect victims of human sex trafficking are poorly enforced. (Gugic,2014365). This lack of enforcement allows traffickers and brothel owners to avoid punishment by the government. For example, petty spas in Thailand open for the purpose of relaxation,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is evidence that both low and high level police officers are involved in the facilitation of human sex trafficking (Niamvanichkul,2013,41). Officers have been known to accept bribes for favors, like knowingly letting brothel owners operate despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in Thailand (Troubnikoff, 2003,135). For example, In Mai Sai, brothels have been known to pay police every month for each girl who is brought in or in order to avoid police raids (Obokata, 2006,54). Back in 2003, fifty police officers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Department were taken off active duty for accepting bribes from brothel owners (Obokata, 2006,54). Some police officers even participate in the actual trafficking of girls, like transporting women from Myanmar to brothels within Thailand (Obokata, 2005, 54). In these instances, trafficking victims are being exploited by not only their employers but also by the police (Gugic, 2014, 366). Thai police officers are paid low salaries, which makes them more likely to turn to bribery and corruption (Tarancon, 2013, 72). Even politicians and political parties have been known to take proceeds from the sex industry, while using its services for free (Davy,2014,803; Opanovych,2016,108). Human sex trafficking cases that involve Thai officials or law enforcement often take a very lenient approach. A sensor for moisture detection have been developed by Michie et al (1994). 2. Piezoelectric materials: Piezoelectric materials have two unique properties which are interrelated. When a piezoelectric material is deformed, it gives off a small but measurable electrical material it experiences a significant increase in size (up to a 4% change in volume). They are often used to measure fluid compositions, fluid density, fluid viscosity, or the force of an impact. In stress and pressure sensing, the PVDF materials have been found to give a better electrical response. Actuating Materials 1.Piezoelectric materials: A piezoceramic material can be used as a strain sensor by taking advantage of the direct piezoelectric effect that converts a mechanical action into an electric charge. • 47. The Character Analysis Of Guy Monttag, By Ray Bradbury Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer (Campbell). Guy Montag is very dedicated to his work as a fireman, he fits the stereotypical role due to his physical appearance. His job is to burn and destroy illegal books. The book is named after the temperature at which book papers ignite. Montag is prideful of his work, he burns everything to the ground, devoid of thinking or feeling. Montag is the protagonist, although there are countless others who could have taken his place as the protagonist; there were also others who fought against society, nevertheless he was the one fireman that went against his ideals and changed significantly due to meeting Clarisse, Faber and the old woman, because he was searching for the meaning of his existence. After meeting Clarisse, Montag begins to question society. Clarisse is very straightforward and clear to Montag. He said that he can see himself in her eyes. How rarely did other people s faces take of you and throw back to your own expression, your own innermost trembling thought? (Bradbury 11). She makes him aware that he never stops to think. He tells Mildred that Clarisse was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted (Bradbury 72). Through his friendship with Clarisse McClellan, Montag recognizes how cruel society can be as opposed to the joys of nature in which he rarely experiences. When Clarisse makes ... • 48. The Philosophical Aspects Of The Abortion Debate The philosophical aspects of the abortion debate form two logical arguments, which oppose and support abortion. These arguments are based on what is ethical and the rights of an individual. The view that abortion should be illegal rest on the moral right of the life of a human being at or near conception killing an embryo is unjust since it violates the right to life (Hershenov 129). Therefore, the law should prohibit violation of the right to life. The view that abortionshould be legal, generally argues that women have the right to control what in their body. On the same note, it explains that they have the right to control what happens on their body. In addition, it argues that abortion is a just act and the law should not criminalise the act of controlling one s body and its life support functions (English 234). Philosophical literature has to kinds of argument regarding the moralityof abortion. One of the families of argument asks the question whether the embryo has the right to life. It bases its argument on the moral status of the embryo and it would be wrong to kill an innocent human being. Death has inspired poets across time and space, language barriers, and cultures allowing them to create transcendent works that resonate with many individuals. Two poets whose works incorporate the theme of death are Dylan Thomas (1914 1953), a Welsh poet and writer, and Pablo Neruda (1904 1973), a Chilean poet, diplomat, and politician. Thomas s Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, one of his most famous poems, focuses on Thomas s struggle to come to terms with his father s death. Neruda s poem, The Dead Woman focuses on the poets resolve to overcome the loss of the woman he loves.
