Why set goals? Having a clear direction for your future and a picture of what you plan to do is
extremely important for maintaining a positive attitude. Having clear goals is a key to creating and
maintaining a positive mindset even when “things get tough.”
Qualities of Goals
In order for goals to be useful, they need to have the following qualities:
The goals that you set for yourself must be based on your values and beliefs.
No one else can choose goals for you. Others can make suggestions, but you must "own" your
goals for them to be useful.
You must decide what you want to achieve.

In Unit 7 you investigate the power of setting goals. You seek to recognize the importance of goal setting and actually apply this
S.M.A.R.T. concept to your Unit 7 interview with completion and submission of your project in Unit 8. Goal setting will assist you and
motivate you to reach for success.
Why is Goal Setting Important?
Imagine you decide to build a house. You do not bother with setting any goals for its completion. Wow. What a mess. Imagine you want
to be a doctor when you grow up, but never thought you needed to take a science class in high school, or did not even plan on going to
college.
Goals motivate us.
Goals stimulate your creativity. You use one of the best creative words possible — you visualize. When you engage in visualization,
you are on the top step of Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. You are fully engaged in critical thinking. Without goals, you will not achieve that
visualization.
Goals guide you.

Goals are set to lead you as you move from beginning to end. They carry you along your way.
Goals inspire you.
Goals help you to recognize that you are the creator of your own stories. You can achieve anything that you want to achieve with the
inspiration you will get from goal setting. You will take things one step at a time and with each step you feel the power of completion.
Goals challenge you.
If not for the challenge involved in accomplishing a goal, you would not get past the first step. Goals do not have to be extremely hard to
reach, and they should not be too simple either, as there is no challenge in that. You reach when you set goals. You want that object,
job, or future that.

lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant
age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives
you the overall perspective that shapes all
other aspects of your decision making.

what is a SMART GOAL?
6. SMART is the acronym for
SPECIFIC,MEASURABLE,ATTAINABLE,REA
LISTIC and TIME BOUND.
This aspect of the slide would focus on setting
SMART GOALS.
7. Goals should be SPECIFIC. “I want a job when
I graduate” is too general. Drill down further to
identify more specific goals, revisiting your
assessment and exploration.
An example of a better goal is, “I want a job with
a Big five consulting firm, working at the Capacity
building Department and earning $1000 monthly.”
8. Goals should be MEASURABLE. It is
important to identify clear objectives so you
can measure progress towards your goals,the
goal you set should be quantified in terms of
numbers so that when you get it, you would
know. Setting up smaller, measurable goals is
the answer. “I will attend five campus recruiting
events sponsored by Big five consulting firms” is
measurable, as you will know you have
reached your goal upon attending five events.
9. Goals should be ATTAINABLE. Are your
goals reasonable? Are you willing and able to
accomplish your goals? It is important to
address these questions when goal setting so
you don’t set yourself up for failure.
In order words, whatever goal you set for your
self you should be able to fulfill them.For
instance you can not set goals for working in a
consulting firm ,if you do not have a
consulting firm in your country or location.
10. Goals should be RELEVANT/REALISTIC.
Your goals should be related to the direction
you want your career to take. It is important
that your short-term and long-term goals are in
sync.
For realistic, you can not set a goal to be the
President of Ghana(my country) when all you
have is a BECE certificate and do not belong to
any political party. This is not a realistic goal.
11. Goals should be TIMELY. Setting deadlines
for achievement of goals will keep you on
track. What do you want to achieve and when
do you want to achieve it? Seeing the finish
line, so to speak, will motivate you to work
towards completion of your goals.
I want to Be the CEO of XYZ company in 10
years time is a timely or a time bound go as it
gives you the impetus to work hard to achieve
it.
