Globalization enables the distribution of American cultural products worldwide. The spread of American pop culture through movies, music, TV and consumer goods has led to its immense global popularity in recent years. However, some view the near take-over of cultural industries in other countries by American pop culture, especially for younger audiences, as a concern.
The Contemporary World: Globalization of World PoliticsRommel Regala
This course introduces students to the contemporary world by examining the multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social sciences, it examines the economic, social, political, technological, and other transformations that have created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of peoples and places around the globe. To this end, the course provides an overview of the various debates in global governance, development, and sustainability. Beyond exposing the student to the world outside the Philippines, it seeks to inculcate a sense of global citizenship and goal ethical responsibility.
In this module, you will journey to the very heart of this course: you will be asked to identify the challenges posed by globalization and consider responses to these challenges as demonstrated by experiences on the ground. For this purpose, students will produce case studies of communities (in the Philippines and other countries) experiencing the impact of globalization and their respective responses to issues that arise. There are global-civic societies engaged in advocacies relating to climate and environmental protection, for example, human trafficking across borders, the application of advances in science and technology to serve some of the world’s poorest communities, and so on. There are, too, communities that have managed, in varying degrees of success, to deal with the effects, good and bad, of globalization.

A brief discussion about globalization through media imperialism.
Researchers focused their effort on mostly nation-states as primary actors in international relations. The flow of news and entertainment was biased in favor of industrialized countries. Developing nations received scant and prejudicial coverage in Western Media. Emphasis on commercialization of sphere of culture. On the second stage of research in Cultural imperialism, it focused on transnational corporations as the primary actors on international relations ; and on transnational capital flows
The end of cold war as a global framework for ideological, Geopolitical, and Economic competition calls for a rethinking of the analytical categories and paradigms of thought. The nation state is no longer the sale or dominant player since transnational transactions occur on sub national, national, and supranational levels. According to John Tomlinson (1991) Globalization replaced cultural imperialism because it conveys a process with less coherence and direction, which will weaken the cultural unity of all nation -states ,Not only those in the developing world. Globalization has emerged as a key perspective across the humanities and social sciences, a current undoubtedly affecting the discipline of communication.
Globalization of culture has become a conceptual magnet attracting research and theorizing efforts from a variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary formations such as anthropology, comparative literature, cultural studies, communication and media studies, geography, and sociology.
Globalization represents an unavoidable phenomenon in the history of mankind, which is making the world smaller and smaller by increasing the exchange of goods, services, information, knowledge and cultures between different countries, therefore, it is very important to understand the "why, where, what and how" of our current situation.
As per the adage, ‘Every cloud has a silver lining’, we have observed that pro- and anti-globalization go hand in hand. If one section of the society considers it to be advancing for good, other section will always pick the bad out of it.
Pro-globalists debate that globalization brings about much increased opportunities for almost everyone, and increased competition is a good thing since it makes agents of production more efficient, the anti-globalists, on the contrary, argue that certain groups of people who are devoid in terms of resources are not currently capable of functioning within the increased competitive pressure that will be brought about by allowing their economic to be more connected to the rest of the world.
Let's read more to understand the impact of both the faces of globalists, their ideology and perception.

Food is confusing: One day milk “does a body good”, the next day it causes cancer. One day we hear that eating meat will help us lose weight, the next day it’s the cause of obesity. How in the world can anyone make sense all the conflicting ideas, theories and studies? (You’d need a PhD in Biochemistry just to eat dinner!)
Over the past few years I’ve been pouring over nutritional science research from the top diets: Paleo, Atkins, Vegan, Forks Over Knives (Plant-Based), the Mediterranean Diet, etc. Where did these diets come from? How do they differ? And which is best for long-lasting health?
I was surprised to find that – amidst all chaos – there seems to be a common set of principles that all of these diets agree upon. And that’s what I’d like to share with you at Alive Berlin.
If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t necessarily like to follow a strict diet, but you want to feel confident in your eating choices, then this workshop is for you. In addition, we’ll talk about how to integrate these principles in a holistic, and positive way. This is a judgment-free zone: so if you’re brand-new, love pizza, or have your own beliefs about food, don’t fear! We welcome all opinions and eating styles in the quest for understanding.
I guarantee that when you leave you’ll feel a sense of clarity, and will have the ability to talk more intelligently about food and nutrition.

Disney and US Imperialism
Cultural Imperialism
Imperialism can be defined as the guiding principle of broadening a nation's power by the acquiring of other countries, or by the formation of financial and political authority over other nations.
Cultural
imperialism can then be defined as the cultural impact of imperialism. This can mean many different things, as culture is such a broad term. When looking at popular culture and cultural imperialism, it is important to look again at the concept of dominant culture. The dominant culture is created, controlled, and spread by the ruling class. The ruling class refers to those individuals or corporations with the most economic power and cultural influence. The political actions of a nation, or the values and beliefs of a society, could be examples of cultural elements that are affected by cultural imperialism, and that is what is being referred to in this lecture.
The Commodification of American Culture
The global power of American culture has been in full effect since the 19th century, when distinctly American commodities were exchanged with other nations on an increasingly large scale. These consumer products ended up being sold in countries such as Britain, or other Western European countries, and this helped to spread dominant American culture. With the advent of mass media, particularly radio and television broadcasting, American consumerist culture was further circulated throughout the world. American cultural commodities, such as films, cars, fast food, music, etc., have increased American influence on an international scale. In turn, some of the commodities produced by the United States since the 1950's have arguably become symbolic of American culture.
Coca-cola
, McDonalds, and Disney products have gained international recognition of what America represents, and this is problematic for a number of reasons. Most importantly, consumer products, or the ideologies that are attached to them, should not ultimately define American culture. Unfortunately, people from nations that have no direct knowledge of American people or their values, have developed opinions about the United States that are based upon capitalism, and its products.
Consumerism and Identity
Regardless of whether the ideologies, or beliefs that have become attached to popular commodities have been placed there intentionally or not, the "cultural work" that these American products perform must be examined. This "cultural work" functions by implying to audiences, or consumers, of cultural products, that they should think or feel a certain way, and that buying this consumer product ultimately means that the consumer is buying into the ideology attached to it. For example, McDonalds is known around the world, and there is a McDonalds restaurant in nearly every country in the world today.
The beliefs attached to McDonalds' products on the surface reveal family values, fun, and enjoyment. However, underneath th.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. LEVEL OF ANALYSIS
PRESTRUCTURAL LEVEL
Globalization enables foreign companies to distribute
American cultural products
UNISTRUCTURAL LEVEL
Spread of ‘’pop culture’’ the popularity of western
fads and fashions, from cloths to television to sports, leads
to cultural contact between ordinary people in everyday life.
MULTISTRUCTURAL LEVEL
US is the biggest producer of popular cultural goods.
pop culture is manifested around the world through movies,
music, television shows, newspapers, satellite broadcasts
etc.
3. RELATIONAL LEVEL
Popular culture has attained an immense global
following precisely because it is popular. For many
citizens of other countries though, the near take-over of
their own cultural industries, especially for younger
audience, is of great concern.
CRITICAL/OUT OF THE BOX
Has the regular and extensive knowledge of
American popular culture as an instrument of influence on
cultural changes in other countries.
4. POP CULTURE
• INTRODUCTION
Among the three effects of globalization on culture the
growth of global ‘’pop culture ’’ tends to get the most attention, and
to strike people on a visceral level. Many complain that this form of
globalization is actually Americanization, because the United
States is by far the biggest producer of popular culture goods. Pop
culture is manifested around the world through movies, music,
television shows, newspapers, satellite broadcasts, fast food and
clothing, among other and consumer goods.
5. QUESTIONS
1.In the light of the above account, evaluate the view that culture is a highly difficult
barrier to international business?
In international business, there is one hidden barrier that no one can
take away. That is the fact that culture influences people in trade. This
is because trading partners lives in a different environment. The
environment could be different in a number of aspects. The most
distinct difference will include; social structure, business organization
and family life. Economically different cultures have different spending
powers and perception on wealth. Political structures, government
influence and laws, state of technological advancement among other
may all be different.
Since culture may be vastly different, it may sometimes prove difficult
to understand what the other party is saying, their feeling and their
action. Since there are no manuals on the subject to bridge the
cultural gap your biggest bet will be your trading partner.
6. 2) What are the implication of the spread of pop culture for
business?
Among the three effects of globalization on culture, the growth of global
“pop culture” tends to get the most attention, and to strike people. Many complain
that this form of globalization is actually Americanization, because the United States
is by far the biggest producer of popular culture goods. Pop culture is Manifested
around the world through movies, music, television shows, newspapers, satellite
broadcasts, fast food and clothing, among other entertainment and consumer
goods. For the United States, the entertainment industry is one of the most
important spheres of economic activity. In fact, the U.S. entertainment industry
generates more revenue from overseas sales than any other industry other than the
commercial aerospace industry

8. 4) Can pop culture encourage achievement motivation?
Popular culture is represented in a variety of ways,
modalities and expressions executed in styles varying from one traditional
culture to another. Distinguishable from the original manner a new pop
trend may had been originally portrayed, localized versions to which the
youth responds form no less than an emerging genre that introduces new
styles, habits and other sorts of prescribed behaviors and attitudes.
9. 5) Discuss the impact of pop culture on the domestic business?
What strategies they should adopt to fight the adverse impact
of the pop culture on their business?
American popular culture truly poses a threat to national and
regional cul-tural traditions, values and tastes or whether America's
popular commodities in fact bear the potential of cultural diversity in
receiving cultures.
• Incorporated with civilizations
• Study deep about the civilizations
• Educate customers about pop culture
10. 6) Discuss the social implications of the pop
culture?
Popular culture, or pop culture, affects everyone. In society today, the
media bombards teens with images and trends. Media defines Popular culture
(or pop culture), what the trends are, what people should be wearing, what
they should be listening to, how they should act, and what they should look
like. Pop culture, in turn, defines what one should look like through movies,
television, magazines, catalogs, billboards, fashion, and music.
Wherever we look, catalogs, magazines, television, movies, and
billboards, images show us the cultural standard, what we should be like and
that is in fashion. The standards that women should be beautiful and sexy are
present throughout these images. Girls as young as twelve start to dress up
and imitate Britney Spears (left) wanting to be like her. On Opera, there was a
show on girls between the ages of ten to thirteen dressing up like Spice Girls,
wearing a miniskirt, a tube top, and makeup. Jennifer Lopez (right), in the
movie industry, and Britney Spears, in the music industry, show how pop
culture depicts women, to have the "sexy •look no matter what they do, as they
exercise or just going through an ordinary day.
11. SUMMARY
Globalization enables foreign companies to
distribute American cultural products, including music and
books. The spread of American restaurant chains and
consumer products world wide is accompanied by the
spread of American popular culture. In recent years,
American movies, music and TV shows have consistently
gained more and more audiences worldwide. Almost by
definition, pop culture has attained an immense global
following precisely because it is popular.
