In the 1980s, the Brandt Line was developed as a way of showing
how the world was geographically split into relatively richer and
poorer nations. Richer countries are almost all located in the
Northern Hemisphere, Poorer countries are mostly located in
tropical regions and in the Southern Hemisphere.
The terms the North and the South, when used in a global context,
are alternative designations for “developed” and “developing”
countries. The North–South divide is broadly considered a socio-
economic and political divide.

The Global North (one quarter of the world
population) refers to developed societies of Europe
and North America, which are characterised by
established democracy, wealth, technological
advancement, political stability, aging population,
zero population growth and dominance of world
trade and politics.
PROBLEMS
- OVERCONSUMPTION AND FOOD WASTAGE
- WIDESPREAD POVERTY (IRELAND AND UK
SPECIFICALLY)
- EXPENSIVE HEALTHCARE
- INCREASING RATE OF MENTAL HEALTH
PROBLEMS
The Global South (the developing countries) (
three quarters of the world population)represents
mainly agrarian economies in Africa, India, China,
Latin America and others that are not as
economically sound and politically stable as their
global North counterparts and tend to be
characterised by turmoil, war, conflict, poverty,
anarchy and tyranny (Odeh, 2010).
PROBLEMS
- CONTEMPORARY GLOBAL CAPITALISM
- NEOCOLONIALISM
- labor conditions
- globalisation, global health governance, health,
and prevention needs
- Market liberalization
However economic development is not the only
way to measure progress per Human
Development Index, there are other factors too
such as: life expectancy and education.
Reasons for development gap:
Environmental factors:
Historical:
Wars
Socio economic:
Globalization
Lack of trade
Abundance of Debt
Neo-colonialism
Lack of aid
UN addressed this by developing program
dedicated to narrowing the divide through its
Millennium Development Goals through
improving health care, promoting gender
equality and ensuring environmental
sustainability
Economic Difference
Between North and
South
North- Industrial Revolutionized,
they opposed slavery.
South- Was a lot more rural,
plantations and small farms,
slavery.
Reasons why our world is so
unequal today:
1. Colonialism
2. Trade
3. Debt

Editor's Notes

  1. Defining development History Where it starts??
  2. Put country lists here
  3. Refrences
  4. PROBLEMS WITH GN -overconsumption - explains high rate of obesity in america - high percentage of food wastage in USA and UK WIDESPREAD POVERTY- Widespread growing poverty including child poverty is serious concerns and most people you see on the street are graduates who have gone to school. They are educated and heavily in debt. (student loans) Expensive medicines - hiv drug in africa is 75usd while it’s 3900usd in us also, not all have health insurance in first world countries MENTAL HEALTH PROBS- Looking at the lifestyle adopted by “First World”, its designed for Individualistic lifestyle, with less to no interaction within family and community. The emotional needs are fulfilled by increased consumption of goods/products. No one identifies this underlying design, and attributes Mental Health issues to genetics.
  5. Characteristcs and such
  6. The problems with GS -contemporary global capitalism -neocolonialismq` Global South captures a deterritorialized geography of capitalism’s externalities and means to account for subjugated peoples within the borders of wealthier countries, such that there are economic Souths in the geographic North and Norths in the geographic South. Following independence and decolonization, these states had dire need of new infrastructure and economic stimulation. Many relied on investment from foreign countries. This funding focused on improving infrastructure and industry, but led to a system of systemic exploitation. They sold raw materials, like as rubber, for a bargain. In return, Western countries used cheap labor in the Global South for production. The West benefited significantly from this system, but left the Global South undeveloped. This system of exploitation is called Neocolonialism. A -contractualization -lack of health facilities MARKET LIBERALIZATION LOSE COMPETITION IN THE NORTH EX: global brands/companies are reffered rathen than the other ex: cars: subaru, kia, nissan // ford chevrolet toyota
  7. Refrences What made the gap so big? Why does the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? Socio, geological, and economic differences Richer countries r less religious
