2. We live in the world of modern technology at our disposal. Many of you are familiar with the use of the internet for various purposes. Some applications of the Internet are: Commerce – ebay, amazon, online sarisari store, Foreign Exchange, Stocks Markets. Communication – VOIP, YM, twitter, chats, e-mail. Leisure – games, movies, news, social net working like friendster, facebook, myspace.

3. Education – online courses, e-learning sites, teacher tube, e-books, YouTube, Open courseware and Live streaming.

4. E-books are widely available on the internet

Internet applications for education is wide-ranging, we are already familiar with the different educational websites, e-learning sites but many of us are not yet acquainted with multimedia streaming for education. That, is where I am going to focused on today. I shall present some streaming applications that are not designed for educational purposes BUT can be utilized for education.

6. So what is Streaming Media? It is a multimedia that is constantly received by, and normally presented to, an end-user while it is being delivered by a streaming provider. The name refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than to the medium itself. Examples are; Teacher Tube, You tube, Metacafe so on and so forth.

7. There are two types of streaming, PASSIVE and LIVE streaming. Passive streaming are videos that are pre-recorded and are not in real time. It can be viewed by the audience over and over again. There is no live interaction with the host or author, and some comments may be left unanswered for days or weeks. Examples of these are; Teacher Tube, You tube, Metacafe among many others.

8. For LIVE streaming, these are videos that are in real time, which means you are watching the person live on the internet. These videos can only be watched when the author is on live feed, unlike the passive streaming, it cannot be watched over and over again. In a live streaming, there can also be a real time interaction with the author, these is done through the available comment box, similar to a chat room format.

9. For Live streaming, some popular social networking sites are Ustream.tv and Justin.tv So, how does education makes use of Streaming technologies inside the classroom? One is the use of Passive Streaming . These are Pre-recorded video lectures that can be watched by the students over and over again. It can be downloaded.

10. It is convenient for the teacher, because pre-recorded videos can only be posted on the site and let the students watch it back in the school. There is also no limitatations as to where is the venue for recording the leacture. Samples of Passive streaming Sample A – video lecture recorded inside the classroom. Sample B – video lecture recorded at home. Sample C – video lecture recorded in the office. (sample videos cannot be posted in slideshare)

11. It enable teachers to post pre-recorded video lectures and conduct classes even if they are out of town or absent. The lecture can be pre-recorded in classrooms or simply in the house. The students would simply go to the computer laboratory and log-on to the website ( You Tube, Teacher tube or Meta café) and watch the video.

12. Live Streaming These are active streaming where the teacher conducts the classes in real-time. Students will simply log-on to the computer during their designated schedule and then watch the teacher present the lesson “Live” from a remote location. Students can interact with the teacher using instant messenger or comment box.

13. The screen shot is a live streaming media, wherein teachers can utilize for remote or distance education outreach. On the left side is the comment box, so that students can interact with the teacher. Though it is not a video interaction, students can still make comments while watching teachers conducting classes online

14. Using these Social Networking Live Streaming sites for educational purposes such as these would enable teachers to reach out to places unreachable before or conduct classes despite of being away from the school.

15. These are multimedia technologies which are primarily social networking sites that can be utilized for education purposes. Utilizing these available technologies would enable teachers to reach out to far flung places, these are particularly helpful not just for ordinary classrooms but also for educating tribes and aborigines that have no access to education but can be connected online using broadband technologies. Using these technologies to fit our needs, Teachers of today can have a global reach.
