Book Summary of The Longevity Diet: Discover the New Science Behind Stem Cell Activation and Regeneration to Slow Aging, Fight Disease, and Optimize Weight by Valter Longo
AHS13 Stephan Guyenet Insulin and Obesity: Reconciling Conflicting Evidence Ancestral Health Society
The pancreatic hormone insulin regulates the trafficking and metabolism of carbohydrate and fat. Since insulin influences fatty acid flux in fat tissue, and manipulating insulin can influence body fatness, this has raised the possibility that insulin plays a role in common obesity. Two competing hypotheses propose that 1) elevated insulin is a compensatory response to insulin resistance that develops with fat gain, or 2) elevated insulin outpaces insulin resistance and favors fat gain. Each hypothesis appears to be supported by a large amount of evidence. This presentation will outline a framework capable of reconciling this seemingly conflicting evidence.

Lecture 3 Dietary requirements and guidelineswajihahwafa
1. Define the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs)
2. Present four (4) levels that represent five (5) food group in Malaysian Food Guide Pyramid
3. Read and understand a nutrition facts label.
4. Present the 14 key Messages of Malaysian Dietary Guidelines and 15 Key Messages Malaysian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents
Over the past century, industrialized societies have seen a meteoric rise in the so-called diseases of civilization: obesity, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, autoimmune disease and cancer. These disorders are often associated with apparent "deficiencies" in critical nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and hormones. This talk will examine the arguments for and against supplementation, together with the evidence from interventional studies. The focus will be on the supplementation with Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and calcium. I will argue that the case for supplementation as a long-term preventive strategy has not be made, and often overlooks the compensating effects of homeostatic regulation.

A thorough look at intermittent fasting and calorie restriction as a benefit ...Dr. Courtney Holmberg, ND
Many health trends come and go, but one dietary trend that has seemed to endure the craze is intermittent fasting.
The primary reason intermittent fasting (IF) has remained so popular is because it offers flexibility to fit a busy schedule, and (while I don't typically advise mindlessly eat as long as your fasting) it doesn't ultimately demand restricted eating.

Nutritional Neuroscience: Thinking Twice about the Foods that Feed your Brain. Rachel V. Gow, PhD
This talk discusses the latest neuroscientific findings on the links between nutrition and mental health, well-being and performance. It provides evidence that specific nutrients are “brain-selective” and can act in comparable ways to pharmaceutical drugs. It also outlines the implications of the change in food production as a result of the agricultural revolution in favor of mass food production and how common nutritional insufficiencies may lead to physical and mental ill-health. The presentation discusses which foods may help optimise brain function with a focus on omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids.

Paul Timms - How to build an army of raving fansSonja Bella
Our next speaker is Paul Timms.
At the age of 26, Paul gave up his 6 figure role as a scientist with BHP to start his first business. He followed the rules, made the mistakes and worked hard building the enterprise to a national franchise turning over millions of dollars each year. After 5 years in business he ended up successful, exhausted and divorced. At the age of 31, Paul had learnt how to achieve success in business through hard work, sacrifice and suffering.
In 2005, Paul established a new set of rules for rapid business growth without hard work and sacrifice. Using the principles of Sustainable Leadership he managed to establish a multimillion dollar enterprise working the hours that he chooses. He founded a national training and membership organisation with a turnover of over $5 M with well over $1 M profit annually.
He sold this business in 2010 and went about creating a raft of new businesses in the education training sector, including Registered Training Australia. Along the way, Paul has held numerous leadership roles on the board of the National Speakers Association of Australia and Fitness Queensland. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and the Institute of Learning Professionals.
Paul is the creator of the Australian Institute of Business Coaches and is passionate about raising the standards and improving the profile of business coaching in Australia. He believes that every business owner should have a qualified business coach, and every business coach should have a business coaching qualification.
Paul is a family man with 4 children under the age of 5, he still manages to squeeze in some kitesurfing and playing AFL for the mighty Sandgate Hawks.

RESULTS: Overall life span (LS) was 2252.1±1742.5 days and cumulative 5-year survival (5YS) reached 73.2%, 10 years – 64.8%, 20 years – 42.5%. 513 LCP lived more than 5 years (LS=3124.6±1525.6 days), 148 LCP – more than 10 years (LS=5054.4±1504.1 days).199 LCP died because of LC (LS=562.7±374.5 days). 5YS of LCP after bi/lobectomies was significantly superior in comparison with LCP after pneumonectomies (78.1% vs.63.7%, P=0.00001 by log-rank test). AT significantly improved 5YS (66.3% vs. 34.8%) (P=0.00000 by log-rank test) only for LCP with N1-2. Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: phase transition (PT) early-invasive LC in terms of synergetics, PT N0—N12, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells- CC and blood cells subpopulations), G1-3, histology, glucose, AT, blood cell circuit, prothrombin index, heparin tolerance, recalcification time (P=0.000-0.038). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and PT early-invasive LC (rank=1), PT N0—N12 (rank=2), thrombocytes/CC (3), erythrocytes/CC (4), eosinophils/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), segmented neutrophils/CC (8), stick neutrophils/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10); leucocytes/CC (11). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (area under ROC curve=1.0; error=0.0).
CONCLUSIONS: 5YS of LCP after radical procedures significantly depended on: 1) PT early-invasive cancer; 2) PT N0--N12; 3) cell ratio factors; 4) blood cell circuit; 5) biochemical factors; 6) hemostasis system; 7) AT; 8) LC characteristics; 9) LC cell dynamics; 10) surgery type: lobectomy/pneumonectomy; 11) anthropometric data. Optimal diagnosis and treatment strategies for LC are: 1) screening and early detection of LC; 2) availability of experienced thoracic surgeons because of complexity of radical procedures; 3) aggressive en block surgery and adequate lymph node dissection for completeness; 4) precise prediction; 5) adjuvant chemoimmunoradiotherapy for LCP with unfavorable prognosis.

Couples presenting to the infertility clinic- Do they really have infertility...Sujoy Dasgupta
Dr Sujoy Dasgupta presented the study on "Couples presenting to the infertility clinic- Do they really have infertility? – The unexplored stories of non-consummation" in the 13th Congress of the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2024) at Manila on 24 May, 2024.
Acute scrotum is a general term referring to an emergency condition affecting the contents or the wall of the scrotum.
There are a number of conditions that present acutely, predominantly with pain and/or swelling
A careful and detailed history and examination, and in some cases, investigations allow differentiation between these diagnoses. A prompt diagnosis is essential as the patient may require urgent surgical intervention
Testicular torsion refers to twisting of the spermatic cord, causing ischaemia of the testicle.
Testicular torsion results from inadequate fixation of the testis to the tunica vaginalis producing ischemia from reduced arterial inflow and venous outflow obstruction.
The prevalence of testicular torsion in adult patients hospitalized with acute scrotal pain is approximately 25 to 50 percent

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

13. Diets to get lean?
All diets work in the short term, but
none of them work in the long-term
14. Is Paleo the way forward?
Little change to human genome during
last 10,000 yrs
Our diet & lifestyle progressively more
divergent from our ancient ancestors
“Socially, we are people of the 21st
century, but genetically we remain citizens
of the Paleolithic era” Loren Cordain
Is our high rate of
hypertension, CVD, diabetes & metabolic
syndrome the result of this?
15. What is a Paleo diet?
Most studies have estimated diets for 229 populations… i.e
there is not one paleo diet, but many
Diets varied depending on geographical location, seasonality
Our ancestors essentially adapted to whatever food was
available
The ability of humans to adapt to a number of different diets is
undoubtedly part of our relative success as a species
But common features all their food came from hunting
(animals & birds), gathering (wild plants & small land fauna) &
fishing (including shell fishing)
16. Modern Paleo… is it true Paleo?
Foods including bacon, butter, sausages & ham were not consume
Not just the lean fillet consumed – bone marrow, organ
meats, smaller animals etc.
Even vegetables today are far different – all influenced by
agriculture
Debate over when grains were introduced
Watch paleontologist Christina Warriner “debunking the paleo diet”
18. Can we use Paleo with our
clients?
The idea sells.. particularly to
men
Minimising processed food –
great
Overly restrictive – poor long
term compliance
Use aspects & then modify
Include (ancient)
wholegrains, legumes, dairy –
in „close-to-nature‟ forms
19. Intermittent fasting
Eat what you like for 5 days
& on 2 non-consecutive
days you fast
Long term compliance?
Effect of gene expression?
Do we just train ourselves
to get better at dealing with
famine?
Nutrient intakes?
I‟m not convinced

22. Carbs are not a food group
Teach clients carbohydrate is a
macronutrient ie a fuel for our bodies
30% of blood glucose goes to fuel brain
Essential for endurance & tough training
sessions “when the going gets tough, the
tough eat carbs” Louise Burke
Cannot put all foods containing carbs in one
basket
Moderate intake of low GI quality carb-rich
foods
23. GI is a tool – not the central
mechanism
Not all low GI foods are smart choices e.g. icecream is clearly not best food for getting lean!
Use it to choose between nutrient-rich foods
Fibre, nutrient-density & other nutritional factors
important
Keep it simple – no need to know the numbers

25. Staying lean: importance of selfmonitoring
N=3003 consistent self-weighing improved
weight loss maintenance
“catch weight gains before they escalated”
Decreasing self-weighing frequency
associated with greater weight gain
Obesity 2007 Dec;15(12):3091-6
26. Long-Term Maintenance
Study
To maintain their weight loss, subjects report
high levels of physical activity ( approximately 1 h/d)
eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet
eating breakfast regularly
self-monitoring weight
maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and
weekends.
Weight loss maintenance may get easier over time; after individuals
have successfully maintained their weight loss for 2-5 yrs, the
chance of longer-term success greatly increases.
Continued adherence to diet and exercise strategies, low levels of
depression and disinhibition, and medical triggers for weight loss
are also associated with long-term success.

eating less & moving more
It is harder for some than others
Protein rich, moderate carbs, healthy fat
Vase analogy – fill with nutrient-dense foods
Rigid eating plans leads to disinhibition &
overeating
Monitor progress & maintenance
Support from peers & family
Good sleep essential
Manage stress & work/life balance
It‟s a complete lifestyle
