- People are an organization’s most important asset. Mention that people are critical and, as we learned on 9-11, may not always be available. You don’t want to have the “Unix guy” on vacation when the disaster strikes if he’s the only one that knows how to direct the recovery of data. So while “redundancy of people” may seem a bit callous, it’s important to think about creating a wide knowledge base among many people geographically distributed that can carry out any necessary recovery process. The second most critical asset is an organizations data or information. Getting data back on-line with tightening budgets is challenging. Data growth is increasing, but generally IT budgets are not. So IT professionals need to do more with the same (or less). There’s also an increasing level of complexity as newer computing and storage technology get deployed in an effort to improve availability and ultimately improve competitiveness. These newer technologies (like SANs) can dramatically change the way data protection and availability are managed. Also, to meet cost objectives there’s a trend towards centralizing. It’s easier to manage more when everything is managed and located centrally.
