Babbit by Sinclair Lewis Essays
Babbitt: Conformity
In the Sinclair Lewis novel Babbitt, the character of Babbitt is completely controlled by the power of
conformity. Conformity is so powerful that even after babbitt realizes the stifling nature of the society
in which he lives he is powerless to change his fate as a member of conformist society.
George F. Babbitt is a man who is completely controlled by the conformist society in which he lives.
Pressure to conform lies in all aspects of Babbitt s life. Relationships, family, social life, and business
are all based on his ability to conform to Zenith s preset standards of thought and action. All of Babbitt
s thoughts are controlled by society. Thoughts that are not those of society are ... Show more content

Sinclair
Lewis wanted to show the reader, a man who s life is based on the ideals and standards of others.
quot;Villages overgrown towns three quarters of a million people still dressing, eating, building
houses, attending church, to make an impression on their neighbors. quot; (Lewis). This is what Lewis
thought of American society and he used Babbitt to voice his opinions to his readers. In fact that
passage was intended to be included in the original introduction of Babbitt, which was never
published.
Babbitt does well in conformist society because in the beginning of the novel he accepts all the
standards, goals, ideals, likes, and dislikes of society. Babbitt s though mirrors all those around him
and he is therefore accepted in society. At first Babbitt lives in the illusion of happiness. The happiness
Babbitt experiences is not genuine because he has replaced his desires with those of society. Since
Babbitt is controlled by society his goals are also controlled by it. The goals set by society are
economic and material worth, social standing, and conservative thought.
Since Babbitt has achieved, at least in part, these goals he is in a sense fooled into believing he is truly
happy. Babbitt s true desires however are not those of society he dreams of nature instead of
modernization, young women instead of his

Essay about The Changing of American Families
The Changing of American Families
Television reflects how American families are viewed. Leave it to Beaver and
The Brady Bunch were the ideal families in the 1960 s and 1970 s, and in the 80 s, it was Family Ties.
When the 1990 s approached us, television shows took on a whole new outlook on American Families.
There were shows such as Full House, which was about a single father raising three daughters with the
help of his brother in law and his best friend. Roseanne was also another show that showed the
dysfunctional side of families. American Families keep changing, and they will continue to change in
our future.
Topics such as the changes in family logistics are important to be informed about in this day and age.
Therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More and more women were pushed into the work force. The 1960 s and 1970 s became an era of
diversity and identity politics as a host of others sought recognition and liberation from the constraints
of discriminatory laws, social policies, and negative stereotypes (Erera 354). As more women were
entering the work force, they were becoming financially independent and were able to live on their
own. This led to many women who were unhappy in their marriage to divorce their husbands and raise
their children on their own. As more and more women became financially independent, the more
appealing single life became to them. Soon women all over were adopting and fostering children, and
many also decided to give birth while still remaining single. With the increasing numbers and
visibility of single parent, step, and adoptive families, the gay liberation movement opened the way
for the emergence of gay and lesbian families (Erera 355). Gay and lesbian families were starting to
become more common as the seventies had passed.
The eighties and nineties were a time when everyone was arguing over what a family really was. Erera
states Voices on the right blames changes in the family for a wide range of social problems, while
voices on the left look to the family to provide the basis for a more communitarian society (Erera
356). People were starting to blame the increase of family diversity to almost anything they could.

The Pros And Cons Of Distracted Driving
Distracted driving is the number one leading cause to accidents. Whether it be texting, calling,
conversing, eating, grooming or reading. The National Safety Council, NSC, says that one in four car
accidents are because of cell phones. Initial data from the National Safety Council estimates that as
many as 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016. That marks a six percent increase over
2015 and a fourteen percent increase over 2014. That is the most dramatic two year escalation in the
past fifty three years. In 2009 1.56 trillion text messages were sent and although we can t find out how
many of those were typed or received in a car, we would say most of them were. The NSC says
texting is involved in at least 100,000 crashes per year. Twenty one percent of car crashes, 1.2 million,
involve talking on the phone even with hands free devices. Distracted driving in 2009 led to half a
million injured and 5,500 killed, says the Department of Transportation. These facts led to the
conclusion that the brain can not perform two tasks at once. It switches quickly between the two, the
switch happens so fast that you believe you are multitasking and paying attention but you really are
just missing chunks of important information. While texting and driving the risks of getting into an
accident go up greatly. Per every six seconds you are using your cell phone while driving, of those six
seconds, four and a half seconds are spent with your eyes off of the road. Although 1,200 people were
surveyed, most admitted that talking on the phone and texting are the two most dangerous things you
can do while driving. Eighty one percent of drivers admit to making phone calls while driving.
Dialing, talking and listening are all dangerous but most accidents occur when you are talking or
listening because more time is spent doing those things than dialing itself. Texting causes a four
hundred percent increase in time with your eyes spent off of the road, meaning that texting and driving
is more dangerous. While not paying attention to the road many things are occurring and changing that
you do not notice since you are not looking or paying attention. Every day there are roughly 666,000
people operating a vehicle while

Essay on Gallipoli and the ANZAC Legend
Question: Courage, mateship, determination, resourcefulness, and a sense of humour are identified as
characteristics of the NAZAC tradition and spirit. Select any one or more of these characteristics and
explore its/their significance to Gallipoli and in more recent times.
To endure hardships special qualities are needed to help keep going and succeed through adversity. On
the 25th April 1915 the ANZAC Legend was born and two qualities emerged, characteristics that
would set the Anzacs apart from other soldiers.
As they charged steep cliffs these soldiers found something in themselves to succeed, to triumph over
the enemy that was raining fire down upon them. Mateship and determination became strengths that
no one could take away from the soldiers that fought, and these two distinguishing qualities are still at
the forefront of today s society, carrying on the traditions and spirit of the past into present time. These
distinctly Australian qualities of mateship and determination not only exist, but thrive in a modern
Australian society. These are prevalent in our armed forces but also in everyone in society, with Anzac
Day a celebration of all these ideals have come to mean. The determination that was showed
throughout the Gallipoli campaign gave the soldiers goals to achieve and strength to fight through the
bleakest hours.

The Contradictory Spectatorial Address Of Some Like It Hot
The Contradictory Spectatorial Address of Some Like It Hot
A film of the fifties, Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, USA, 1959) provides insight into the state of the
film industry, recently wracked by legislation and censorship, the implementation of pre existing
technology in part to combat the new limitations, the importance of the star system, and the two sided
response to the social norms, both contradicting and reinforcing the status quo. Billy Wilder seemingly
celebrates disregard for moral values of the time as a source of humor, referencing cross dressing, sex,
homosexuality, and lesbianism through leading men who execute cons without suffering negative
consequences; and expects his spectator to do the same. Overall, the film appears ... Show more

In the period, the newly implemented technological elements and unique stylistic choices present the
context of moviegoing as [a] special event, which contributed to the cultivation of an aggressive
relationship with the spectator. Wilder also spectacularizes his film through its genre subversion and
bawdy humor. However, in his references to more serious themes, such as gender, he engages the
newly developing sophisticated spectator, capable of distinguishing and appreciating the technological
features of films, the issues tackled within narratives, and the implied breeches of the Production
Code, such as when Osgood pinche[s] Jerry/Daphne (Jack Lemmon) behind the closed doors of an
elevator.
The spectacularity of the star system in this period and particularly in Some Like It Hot directly
connect with its gender issues. Steven Cohen argues that the fifties star system presents actors as both
gender models and sexual objects, and Wilder s film reinforces his conclusions. Cohen goes on to call
Monroe the most spectacularized female star of the decade, a fact Wilder openly uses to his advantage.
In the character of Sugar Kane, Wilder includes extratextual references to two of Monroe s popular
roles, Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawkes, USA, 1953) and Pola Debevoise in
How to Marry a Millionaire (Jean Negulesco, USA, 1953), both in search of rich men, like Kane.

On Erasmus third visit, in 1509, he wrote Encomium Moriae, or Praise of Folly, (1509), dedicating it
to More.
One of More s first acts in Parliament had been to urge a decrease in a proposed appropriation for
King Henry VII. In revenge, the king had imprisoned More s father and not released him until a fine
was paid and More himself had withdrawn from public life. After the death of the king in 1509, More
became active once more. In 1510, he was appointed one of the two undersheriffs of London. In this
capacity, he gained a reputation for being impartial, and a patron to the poor. In 1511, More s first wife
died in childbirth. More was soon married again, to Dame Alice.
During the next decade, More attracted the attention of King Henry VIII. In 1515 he accompanied a
delegation to Flanders to help clear disputes about the wool trade. Utopia opens with a reference to
this very delegation. More was also instrumental in quelling a 1517 London uprising against
foreigners, portrayed in the play Sir Thomas More, possibly by Shakespeare. More accompanied the
King and court to the Field of the Cloth of Gold. In 1518 he became a member of the Privy Council,
and was knighted in 1521.
More helped Henry VIII in writing his Defence of the Seven Sacraments, a repudiation of Luther, and
wrote an answer to Luther s reply under a pseudonym. More had garnered Henry s favor, and was
made Speaker of the House of Commons in 1523 and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1525.

America s War With Unlimited Resources Essay
After the Wright brothers embarked on the first sustained, heavier than air, man powered flight aboard
the Wright Flyer. Airplane soon had been used for the war fighting. Some airpower pioneers started to
advocate the new technology with great influence and unlimited potential to future warfare. As the
new technology apply to different country with different school of thought, the way to employ
airpower started to develop into several different model. Early British and Italian military theorists
like Trenchard and Douhet who believed that civilian morale would collapse with the bombing of
industrial center. US General Mitchell believed the airplane can easily destroy the Navy battle ship in
lower cost.
The idea of airpower can wage the war in cheaper, quicker and more humanely way is prompted by
the development of technology. In spite of this, several historical case studies and evidence shows the
technology along cannot effectively employ the airpower. In fact, the resources are limited, no country
can fight the war with unlimited resource. Then the sound strategy plays an important guild line to
control the limited resources and gave the military leader the coherence objectives to achieve. That is
to say, we cannot effectively employ airpower without the back up of technology, but the lesson learns
from World War II, Vietnam war and war in middle east shows the play mort important role than
technology. We also can use it as a guild line to prepare for tomorrow s war

I ve Lost My Faith in Organized Religion Essay
I ve Lost My Faith in Organized Religion
When I was four years old, I used to stand on top of the pews and sing my heart out. I had what my
mother still refers to as a heart for Jesus, and I loved to sing. I sang so loudly and with so much
enthusiasm that I was an embarrassment to my incredibly introverted parents and a blessing to the
adults around me.
I loved church. From belting Father Abraham to watching Gospel Bill videos to coloring pictures of
David and Goliath, it was endless fun. The Sunday School teachers seemed immortal, and I loved
talking to them, and I wanted to be just like them when I grew up. I learned to obey my parents and
love my neighbor and speak in tongues. And of course I learned to love Jesus.

The clever church does not stop at using guilt to obtain funding. It further seeks to control its members
and every aspect of their lives. The church wants carbon copies of sin free, squeaky clean, productive
citizens. Mormans are expected to spend two years of their lives volunteering as missionaries (
Oxtoby 319 ). The Catholic religion uses guilt to get its members to abstain from the use of birth
control ( Oxtoby 329 ). The Catholic Church also tries to increase church attendance by making it a
mortal sin to not attend church. Many Christian religions try to get their young people to remain
innocent and pure by teaching them that sex is a dirty and sinful act outside of marriage. Baptists are
taught to feel guilty about dancing, and Jews are forbidden from even touching ham or pork ( Oxtoby
75 ). Whether the church needs money, mass numbers of people, or specific behaviors from its
followers, it can always be sure to achieve the desired results with a little bit of good old fashioned
guilt.
One of the things that bothers me the most about religion is that it is extremely judgmental. Although
they throw around phrases like, hate the sin, not the sinner, the actions of religious people speak
louder than their words. I was told since I was born that anyone who did not accept Jesus Christ as his
personal Lord and Savior would go to hell. The Church

Poetry Compare And Contrast Essay
In the history of literature, different aspects are prevalent during the different time periods. The
Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote in the nineteenth century in England, which was a time
when the literature reacted against science. During this era, most people in England believed in God
being the creator. Conversely, Robert Frost is a modern poet that wrote in America during the
twentieth century. He has been described as the purest classical poet of America (Browning and
Cousin 243). Many authors throughout this time period rebelled against religion in their writing. The
poems Pied Beauty by Hopkins and Design by Frost are both characteristic of the time periods in
which the authors wrote them. These two poems have distinguishable similarities and differences, and
the main aspects of these poems that have similarities and differences is their imagery and theme. The
two poems Pied Beauty and Design have many similarities in their imagery. Both of these poems
contain natural imagery in great detail, and the imagery focuses on the unusual things about nature. A
vivid example from Beauty is I found a dimpled spider, fat and white (Frost 1). ¹ This quote describes
the appearance of the spider that is one of the characters that Frost includes in this poem. An example
from Pied Beauty is For skies of couple color as a brindled cow (Hopkins 2). ² Hopkins is painting a

school and old school skateboards dominated the scene. However one may perform tricks on
longboards, the main difference between skateboards and longboards is that longboards sole purpose
is for coasting, street riding and transportation. Furthermore, due to the increasing popularity of
longboards emerging across the world, now is the best opportunity to begin the process of opening a
board shop. The business that I am creating is called ZigZag Boards. ZigZag Boards is a grassroots

The Unlucky In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
As we all know nothing is ever as it seems. In the story the Lottery by Shirley Jackson there is a small
village in which every summer there is a lottery held. At first when we think of a lottery we think of
one lucky winner who wins a grand prize. However in this village the lottery is used to determine one
unlucky winner who gets stoned to death. As seen in the story when Tessie Hutchinson, the unlucky
winner of the lottery gets stoned to death by her own village. In the story the Lottery, Shirley Jackson
uses tone and foreshadowing to argue that all people, regardless of how civilized they seem, are
capable of great evil.
Shirley Jackson uses the setting, the villager s behavior, and the lottery itself to set the tone to show
that even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The paraphernalia of the lottery is used to indicate the evil actions that have yet to take place. For
example in the story it had said Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stone. (L16)
Later on it said eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner (L19) and that they stood together,
away from the pile of stones. This seems odd because a child has his pockets full of rocks. And it is
not apparent to why he has those stones. And the pile of rocks gives of an ominous feeling because it
makes the reader wonder why there is just a pile rocks and why the men are scared of the rock since
they stood away from it. The names of the people also hint towards the evil actions at the end of the
story. The names of the two people who help conduct the lottery are Mr.Summers and Mr.Graves .
There is also a child whose last name is Delacroix. Mr.Summers last name happens to be summer
which is when the lottery is held. And Mr.Graves last name happens to be graves which represent
death. And finally Delacroix is a French surname which comes from de la Croix which means of the
cross. And crosses refer to Jesus Christ who was killed and sacrificed on a cross. Their names together
clues that during the summer there is reoccurring death. Jackson furthermore uses the

Early Childhood Dementia
Dementia
What exactly is dementia? By definition, Dementia, which is from the Latin word dement meaning
without mind, is a progressive deterioration and eventual loss of mental ability that is severe enough to
interfere with normal activities of daily living, lasts more than six months, not present since birth, and
not associated with a loss or alteration of consciousness (Thomasson, 2014). Dementia is usually
caused by a loss of brain cells in the cerebral cortex of the brain, the part responsible for thoughts,
memory, actions, and personality (Thomasson, 2014). The loss of brain cells in this part of the brain
usually leads to what is called cognitive impairment which can at some point be diagnosed as
dementia (Thomasson, 2014). What a lot of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

diseases (Thomasson, 2014). Some major types of dementias are early onset dementia (EOD), non

European Journal of Neurology held a study looking deep into the prevalence of early onset dementia
because the disorder seems to be so much more prevalent in older aged people (Lambert, 2014). They
released a systematic review of charts which determined that a number of people can develop

people, early onset dementia and its symptoms still exist (Lambert, 2014) Pick s disease, Parkinson
disease, and Huntington s disease are technically all classified as Non Alzheimer degenerative

blood flow to the brain and a severe decline in mental function (Thomasson, 2014). And infectious
dementias can either attack the brain directly, or eventually spread to it. Brain infections can be caused

Porter s Five Forces Model
Porter s Five Forces In order to further figure out the failure of GM in Korea, we decided to analyse it
from industrial perspective. The five forces model, which was developed by the Harvard professor
Michael Porter, is going to be applied to the case. Porter s five force model demonstrates that the
Threat of New Entrant, the Threat of Substitute Products or services, the Bargaining Power of Buyers,
the Bargaining Power of Suppliers and the Rivalry among the Existing Competitors are the forces that
shape the industry competition. Throughout the investigation of GM Korea, factors from the five
forces model except for the Bargaining Power of Suppliers, will be discussed briefly regarding the
failure of GM Korea. Research tells us that, GM Korea sold in total of 780,518 vehicles during the
year 2013; 629,478 of the total productions were exported to the world, the remaining 151,040
vehicles were managed to sell within Korea. Compared to the sales in 2012, the domestic performance
was actually raised by 25%, though oversea orders reduced 13.2% and lead to a 6.2% reduction in
total sales. The research implicates that, GM Korea is actually heavily relied on global trading instead
of domestic demand. In terms of the threat of new entrants, it is reasonable to illustrate that the threat
of new entrants for the industry because GM Korea does rely a lot on global sales and the constant
industry structure from local market, and in this case, it mainly comes from the global market.

Analysis Of The Movie The Heart Of The Sea
December is usually a time of celebration where most people enjoy the holidays loved ones. Unlike
every other year, this season will include a blockbuster film that is loosely based off the classic tale,
Moby Dick. However, the trailers for In the Heart of the Sea, directed by Ron Howard, are based of a
book version with the same title. The abstract idea of this movie sounds phenomenal, but the when it
comes to the teaser trailer that is supposed to be about a giant whale, it did not seem to make a splash.
The movie is not slated to be released until December 11, 2015, but it is clear to see that the teaser
trailer has given the movie a negative vibe. Luckily, the official trailer was released about a month
later, and it has revived the film through the extremely well crafted usage of plot details, appropriate
music, and dialogue.
Ron Howard started his career as a child actor on the classic television shows. Soon later he began
breaking the barrier into movies, and Howard convinced Roger Corman, a producer, to help him direct
Howard s film project. Three years later, Howard evolved into a well established movie director. Mr.
Howard has now directed many movies that have resulted in success. For example, he is the genius
behind the movie, Apollo 13 (Ron Howard Biography). The award winning director s latest project
has had a difficult beginning, but is now steadily evolving into a great film thanks to the official
trailer.

Comparing Nectar In A Sieve And Greek Mythology
The Indian culture of Nectar in a Sieve and the Greek culture Mythology are without doubt very
different. However, despite those differences, both cultures share some similarities. The link between
the Indian culture in Nectar in a Sieve and Greek culture is the fact that both cultures are polytheistic,
meaning that they worship more than one god. For instance, in Nectar in a Sieve, a massive storm
came upon the village where Ruku (main character) and her family lived, which caused the
destruction of their home and more importantly the crops, which provided them with food in order to
survive. Since Ruku and her family, amongst the other villagers, saw that the situation was not going
to improve any time soon they began to pray to their gods.

Haitian-American Religious Beliefs
Religious Beliefs and Rituals
Approximately 90 percent of Haitians are Catholic and 10 % are Protestant (Jacobson, 2003). Within
the Haitian American community, however, Voodoo exists side by side with Christian faiths. Jacobson
goes on to explain that many Haitians see no contradiction in calling themselves Christians while
engaging in Voodoo practices (2003). In Haiti, Catholicism is highly ritualistic and religious practices
combine the ancient rituals of African based cultures with Western based faith practices. Jacobson
explains that Voodoo cosmology is made up of a large numbers of supernatural spirits...these spirits
are believed to have great influence on human beings and for that reason, they must be respected

The Effect of Temperature on the Light Transmission on the Permeability of a Beetroot Cell
When the bathing solution is between 3°C and 60°C the light transmission decreases. The light
transmission decreases more rapidly when the bathing solution is over 60°C. The amount of beetroot
pigment released does increase as the bathing temperature increases. The light transmission average
was 85.8% when the bathing solution was 3°C so less pigment was released. At 80°C the light
transmission was 33.0% which shows that more pigment was released from the beetroot cell at a
higher temperature.

It would be difficult to keep the temperature constant for this amount of time so we put the boiling
tube with the bathing solution into a beaker of water at the required temperature. This insulted the
bathing solution so that it stayed at the right temperature for the full 2 minutes. Some groups did not
do this so over the 2 minutes the temperature was not exact. If the bathing solution was not at the
correct temperature the results may not be as reliable. Using an electronic thermostatic water bath
would keep the temperature of the bathing solution constant during the 2 minutes and therefore the
results would be more reliable.
For the lowest temperature, 3°C, we used ice. The highest light transmission is 97% and the lowest is
77%. This large range could be because as th experiment went on the temperature of the ice increased.
The 97% could have been measured in the beginning and the 77% measure at the end. The results for
3°C could be taken again all at the same time. The results taken at 20°C have the smallest range. This
could be because it was the closest to room temperature and therefore easier to maintain the bathing

Psychology, Climate Change And Sustainable Behavior
Environmental psychology provides a relatively new and at the same time complex perspective on the
connection between the human being and the surrounding environment. Despite the fact that this area
of expertise represents a mix of several sciences, among which economics, psychology, sociology
(Bechtel and Churchman, 2002, p2 5), it provides a structured view on the interactions humans have
with their surroundings. Given this co dependence, there are numerous events that happen every day
that affect the relation between the human being and its environment.
We live in an ever dependent world and environment. Therefore, it is only natural that world breaking
events shape and influence life for communities and countries. Alexa Spence and Nick Pidgeon point
out this very fact in an article presented in the online version of Environment Magazine, Psychology,
Climate Change Sustainable Behavior (2009). They provide certain tools that can be used to change in
the behavior of consumers and ordinary citizens once climate change has become a subject for
discussion for the international community.
The main point the authors are raising concerns the way in which the society, aware on the intrinsic
need to change in order to adapt to new challenges faced by climate change, can actually find the
motivation, means, and capacity to do this. More precisely, the authors raise the issues of What
represents a sustainable lifestyle, and how might competing visions of this be

Pros And Cons Of Child Adoption
Adopting children is common all around the world. It has been a normal thing to see for a while. What
many do not know is that a single person can take ownership of someone in their youth. It has been
allowed for a while, yet many people who I have asked are not knowledgeable on the subject. People
who plan to adopt or have kids in the future can benefit from this. It is an awesome way to have a
child at any stage of life. I know that many people are looking to have children but cannot because of
one reason or another. The problem is, some people say that one parent isn t enough to raise a child.
With more issues happening in the world, people tend to worry more about how each child will be
when they grow up. Equally, I get where people are coming from if they believe that. Some citizens
totally disagree that a person can adopt alone. They argue that every child needs two people to look
out for them. According to that mindset, mentally a parent cannot raise a child on their own. Raising
children is also physically tough too. It is felt to be that way because the energy, money, and love that
they need to give the child. Supporting the kid can get stressful because it s needed to be at work most
of the time to get money but also be with their children. Single parents, children with only one parent,
or people who know of them are ones who tend to feel this way. Raising someone is difficult with two
parents, and they believe it is way harder with half the support.

Commentary On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
(adapted for the stage by Simon Levy)
Introduction
F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby is an impressive social commentary on many themes
such as power, money, greed, social status, and so on. The Great Gatsby is originally a novel which
has been adapted as a play by Simon Levy. I intend to look at the theoretical aspects of this play and
my major focus will be on the social stratification, inequality and gender roles in the American life at
that time. The story of the Great Gatsby falls into the timeline of the 1920s.
The Story
The story of the Great Gatsby is very interesting. It takes place in Long Island in America. A
mysterious man Jay Gatsby builds a mansion in West Egg (a fictional place in Long island). Jay ...

The Buchanans would never accept Gatsby as being in the same social status as them because the
Buchanans have had wealth and power in the family for generations and Gatsby had just acquired the
wealth. The Buchanans know that Gatsby comes from the lower class background and so they think
Gatsby s manner, behavior and taste can never match that of the Buchanans. Warner, Meeker and Eels
(2006) describe the concept of the American Dream as follows: In the bright glow and warm presence
of the American Dream all men are born free and equal. Everyone in the American Dream has the
right, and often the duty, to try to succeed and to do his best to reach the top . Warner, Meeker and
Eells do consider this definition of American Dream contradictory though as they state that If all men
are born equal, there can be no top level to strive for. No such equality, neither in position nor in
opportunity, exists and that a person s opportunities are very much dependent on family background
(Warner, Meeker Eells 2006). So, Gatsby s wealth still doesn t let him enter the elite social class and
this shows the inequality between the rich. During the play, we can clearly see this when Daisy
Buchanan is completely dazzled in the new found riches of Jay Gatsby but later when Tom exposes
Gatsby about his shady businesses, Daisy s reaction is of shock and she stops talking to Gatsby after
that. For Daisy, just being wealthy is

We All Have Evil Inside
We All Have Evil Inside Nathaniel Hawthorne is best known for his use of allegorical figures in his
short stories. The use of allegories help its readers seek a hidden meaning of an object or character to
help them understand their significance to the story. In 1835, Hawthorne wrote the short story of
Young Goodman Brown where the reader is introduced to an innocent and pure couple who are all
about religion and against any evil worshippers. Faith and Goodman Brown will face a diabolic
journey to hell, and fight against the will of the evil which is nearly impossible for everyone in town
has walked through sin. I am writing about Young Goodman Brown because I am trying to show you
how Hawthorne relies on the allegorical figures of Faith, the old man, and Goodman Brown to explain
that everyone has evil within their own nature.
Faith plays an important role that functions as an allegorical figure throughout Goodman Brown s
diabolic journey. For example, at the beginning of the story, young Goodman Brown comes late to his
meeting with the old man. As a result, he excused himself by stating Faith kept me back (Hawthorne
pg. 387). Besides Faith being his wife s name, it is an allegory for religious faith. It is emphasized at
the beginning of the story that this couple comes from a Puritan s society. In addition, their religious
beliefs are strict, for they fear that any careless action may lead them to hell. In this scene, Goodman
Brown commits a careless mistake when he

Shiloh Symbolism
One such symbol is the log cabin that Leroy wants to build for Norma Jean. The log cabin is
mentioned continually throughout the story in discussions between Leroy and Norma Jean. At first
glance the log cabin seems to be just an obsession by Leroy s thinkering side (Leroy builds numerous
models during the course of the story such as a B 17 Bomber (p. 804)). However, the log cabin
actually represents Leroy and Norma Jean s marriage. Leroy wants to build the cabin for Norma Jean
while Norma Jean thinks the cabin is a stupid idea. Determinedly, Leroy states that I m going to build

Birds are used in Shiloh to describe a sense of freedom for Norma Jean but a sense of nesting for
Leroy. While Leroy wants to be at home with Norma Jean and settle down in the log cabin, a nest,
Norma Jean wants to be free and fly off like a bird would. Symbolically, the narrator is likening the
main character to birds: It (Leroy s rig) sits in the backyard like a gigantic bird that has flown home to
roost. (p. 804). Leroy s rig is an extension of him and shows that both he and his rig are home to stay
and settle with Norma Jean. However, Norma Jean has a different association with birds. Additionally,
the narrator describes that, She is picking cake crumbs from the cellophane wrapper, like a fussy bird.
(p. 812). Obviously, this relates Norma Jean to a bird in the way she was eating the cake crumbs.
Moreover, Norma Jean is specifically stated as a fussy bird . Norma Jean has finally hit her end and
wants to leave but does not know how to say it to Leroy. Norma Jean seems fussy to Leroy but in
reality she is conflicted internally and ready to move on with her life. While birds are an important
symbol in the story, the graveyard at Shiloh is immensely important as

The Scarlet Letter Archetypes
Archetypes in The Scarlet Letter

Babbitt is a man who is completely controlled by the conformist society in which he lives. Pressure to conform lies in all aspects of Babbitt s life. This conformist man is exactly who Sinclair Lewis wanted to show the reader, a man who s life is based on the ideals and standards of others. quot;Villages overgrown towns three quarters of a million people still dressing, eating, building houses, attending church, to make an impression on their neighbors. quot; (Lewis). This is what Lewis thought of American society and he used Babbitt to voice his opinions to his readers. In fact that passage was intended to be included in the original introduction of Babbitt, which was never published. Babbitt does well in conformist society because in the beginning of the novel he accepts all the standards, goals, ideals, likes, and dislikes of society. Babbitt s though mirrors all those around him and he is therefore accepted in society. At first Babbitt lives in the illusion of happiness. The happiness Babbitt experiences is not genuine because he has replaced his desires with those of society. Since Babbitt is controlled by society his goals are also controlled by it. The goals set by society are economic and material worth, social standing, and conservative thought. Since Babbitt has achieved, at least in part, these goals he is in a sense fooled into believing he is truly happy. Babbitt s true desires however are not those of society he dreams of nature instead of modernization, young women instead of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay about The Changing of American Families The Changing of American Families Television reflects how American families are viewed. Leave it to Beaver and The Brady Bunch were the ideal families in the 1960 s and 1970 s, and in the 80 s, it was Family Ties. When the 1990 s approached us, television shows took on a whole new outlook on American Families. There were shows such as Full House, which was about a single father raising three daughters with the help of his brother in law and his best friend. Roseanne was also another show that showed the dysfunctional side of families. American Families keep changing, and they will continue to change in our future. More and more women were pushed into the work force. The 1960 s and 1970 s became an era of diversity and identity politics as a host of others sought recognition and liberation from the constraints of discriminatory laws, social policies, and negative stereotypes (Erera 354). As more women were entering the work force, they were becoming financially independent and were able to live on their own. This led to many women who were unhappy in their marriage to divorce their husbands and raise their children on their own. As more and more women became financially independent, the more appealing single life became to them. Soon women all over were adopting and fostering children, and many also decided to give birth while still remaining single. With the increasing numbers and visibility of single parent, step, and adoptive families, the gay liberation movement opened the way for the emergence of gay and lesbian families (Erera 355). Gay and lesbian families were starting to become more common as the seventies had passed. The eighties and nineties were a time when everyone was arguing over what a family really was. Erera states Voices on the right blames changes in the family for a wide range of social problems, while voices on the left look to the family to provide the basis for a more communitarian society (Erera 356). People were starting to blame the increase of family diversity to almost anything they could. From ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Pros And Cons Of Distracted Driving Distracted driving is the number one leading cause to accidents. Whether it be texting, calling, conversing, eating, grooming or reading. The National Safety Council, NSC, says that one in four car accidents are because of cell phones. Initial data from the National Safety Council estimates that as many as 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016. That marks a six percent increase over 2015 and a fourteen percent increase over 2014. That is the most dramatic two year escalation in the past fifty three years. In 2009 1.56 trillion text messages were sent and although we can t find out how many of those were typed or received in a car, we would say most of them were. The NSC says texting is involved in at least 100,000 crashes per year. Twenty one percent of car crashes, 1.2 million, involve talking on the phone even with hands free devices. Distracted driving in 2009 led to half a million injured and 5,500 killed, says the Department of Transportation. These facts led to the conclusion that the brain can not perform two tasks at once. It switches quickly between the two, the switch happens so fast that you believe you are multitasking and paying attention but you really are just missing chunks of important information. While texting and driving the risks of getting into an accident go up greatly. Per every six seconds you are using your cell phone while driving, of those six seconds, four and a half seconds are spent with your eyes off of the road. Although 1,200 people were surveyed, most admitted that talking on the phone and texting are the two most dangerous things you can do while driving. Eighty one percent of drivers admit to making phone calls while driving. Dialing, talking and listening are all dangerous but most accidents occur when you are talking or listening because more time is spent doing those things than dialing itself. Texting causes a four hundred percent increase in time with your eyes spent off of the road, meaning that texting and driving is more dangerous. While not paying attention to the road many things are occurring and changing that you do not notice since you are not looking or paying attention. Every day there are roughly 666,000 people operating a vehicle while ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Characteristics Of Gallipoli And The Anzac Legend Chris Harry 10 C RBD 14/03/2006 1 Christopher Harry, Prince Alfred College, South Australia PAC Year 10 History Essay on Gallipoli and the ANZAC Legend Question: Courage, mateship, determination, resourcefulness, and a sense of humour are identified as characteristics of the NAZAC tradition and spirit. Select any one or more of these characteristics and explore its/their significance to Gallipoli and in more recent times. To endure hardships special qualities are needed to help keep going and succeed through adversity. On the 25th April 1915 the ANZAC Legend was born and two qualities emerged, characteristics that would set the Anzacs apart from other soldiers. As they charged steep cliffs these soldiers found something in themselves to succeed, to triumph over the enemy that was raining fire down upon them. Mateship and determination became strengths that no one could take away from the soldiers that fought, and these two distinguishing qualities are still at the forefront of today s society, carrying on the traditions and spirit of the past into present time. These distinctly Australian qualities of mateship and determination not only exist, but thrive in a modern Australian society. These are prevalent in our armed forces but also in everyone in society, with Anzac Day a celebration of all these ideals have come to mean. The determination that was showed throughout the Gallipoli campaign gave the soldiers goals to achieve and strength to fight through the bleakest hours. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Contradictory Spectatorial Address Of Some Like It Hot The Contradictory Spectatorial Address of Some Like It Hot A film of the fifties, Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder, USA, 1959) provides insight into the state of the film industry, recently wracked by legislation and censorship, the implementation of pre existing technology in part to combat the new limitations, the importance of the star system, and the two sided response to the social norms, both contradicting and reinforcing the status quo. Billy Wilder seemingly celebrates disregard for moral values of the time as a source of humor, referencing cross dressing, sex, homosexuality, and lesbianism through leading men who execute cons without suffering negative consequences; and expects his spectator to do the same. Overall, the film appears ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the period, the newly implemented technological elements and unique stylistic choices present the context of moviegoing as [a] special event, which contributed to the cultivation of an aggressive relationship with the spectator. Wilder also spectacularizes his film through its genre subversion and bawdy humor. However, in his references to more serious themes, such as gender, he engages the newly developing sophisticated spectator, capable of distinguishing and appreciating the technological features of films, the issues tackled within narratives, and the implied breeches of the Production Code, such as when Osgood pinche[s] Jerry/Daphne (Jack Lemmon) behind the closed doors of an elevator. The spectacularity of the star system in this period and particularly in Some Like It Hot directly connect with its gender issues. Steven Cohen argues that the fifties star system presents actors as both gender models and sexual objects, and Wilder s film reinforces his conclusions. Cohen goes on to call Monroe the most spectacularized female star of the decade, a fact Wilder openly uses to his advantage. In the character of Sugar Kane, Wilder includes extratextual references to two of Monroe s popular roles, Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Howard Hawkes, USA, 1953) and Pola Debevoise in How to Marry a Millionaire (Jean Negulesco, USA, 1953), both in search of rich men, like Kane. ... • 15. I ve Lost My Faith in Organized Religion Essay I ve Lost My Faith in Organized Religion When I was four years old, I used to stand on top of the pews and sing my heart out. I had what my mother still refers to as a heart for Jesus, and I loved to sing. I sang so loudly and with so much enthusiasm that I was an embarrassment to my incredibly introverted parents and a blessing to the adults around me. I loved church. From belting Father Abraham to watching Gospel Bill videos to coloring pictures of David and Goliath, it was endless fun. It further seeks to control its members and every aspect of their lives. The church wants carbon copies of sin free, squeaky clean, productive citizens. Mormans are expected to spend two years of their lives volunteering as missionaries ( Oxtoby 319 ). The Catholic religion uses guilt to get its members to abstain from the use of birth control ( Oxtoby 329 ). The Catholic Church also tries to increase church attendance by making it a mortal sin to not attend church. Many Christian religions try to get their young people to remain innocent and pure by teaching them that sex is a dirty and sinful act outside of marriage. Baptists are taught to feel guilty about dancing, and Jews are forbidden from even touching ham or pork ( Oxtoby 75 ). Whether the church needs money, mass numbers of people, or specific behaviors from its followers, it can always be sure to achieve the desired results with a little bit of good old fashioned guilt. One of the things that bothers me the most about religion is that it is extremely judgmental. • 16. Poetry Compare And Contrast Essay In the history of literature, different aspects are prevalent during the different time periods. The Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote in the nineteenth century in England, which was a time when the literature reacted against science. During this era, most people in England believed in God being the creator. Conversely, Robert Frost is a modern poet that wrote in America during the twentieth century. He has been described as the purest classical poet of America (Browning and Cousin 243). Many authors throughout this time period rebelled against religion in their writing. The poems Pied Beauty by Hopkins and Design by Frost are both characteristic of the time periods in which the authors wrote them. These two poems have distinguishable similarities and differences, and the main aspects of these poems that have similarities and differences is their imagery and theme. The two poems Pied Beauty and Design have many similarities in their imagery. Both of these poems contain natural imagery in great detail, and the imagery focuses on the unusual things about nature. A vivid example from Beauty is I found a dimpled spider, fat and white (Frost 1). ¹ This quote describes the appearance of the spider that is one of the characters that Frost includes in this poem. Porter s five force model demonstrates that the Threat of New Entrant, the Threat of Substitute Products or services, the Bargaining Power of Buyers, the Bargaining Power of Suppliers and the Rivalry among the Existing Competitors are the forces that shape the industry competition. Throughout the investigation of GM Korea, factors from the five forces model except for the Bargaining Power of Suppliers, will be discussed briefly regarding the failure of GM Korea. Research tells us that, GM Korea sold in total of 780,518 vehicles during the year 2013; 629,478 of the total productions were exported to the world, the remaining 151,040 vehicles were managed to sell within Korea. Compared to the sales in 2012, the domestic performance was actually raised by 25%, though oversea orders reduced 13.2% and lead to a 6.2% reduction in total sales. The research implicates that, GM Korea is actually heavily relied on global trading instead of domestic demand. People who plan to adopt or have kids in the future can benefit from this. It is an awesome way to have a child at any stage of life. I know that many people are looking to have children but cannot because of one reason or another. The problem is, some people say that one parent isn t enough to raise a child. With more issues happening in the world, people tend to worry more about how each child will be when they grow up. Equally, I get where people are coming from if they believe that. Some citizens totally disagree that a person can adopt alone. They argue that every child needs two people to look out for them. According to that mindset, mentally a parent cannot raise a child on their own. Raising children is also physically tough too. It is felt to be that way because the energy, money, and love that they need to give the child. The use of allegories help its readers seek a hidden meaning of an object or character to help them understand their significance to the story. In 1835, Hawthorne wrote the short story of Young Goodman Brown where the reader is introduced to an innocent and pure couple who are all about religion and against any evil worshippers. Faith and Goodman Brown will face a diabolic journey to hell, and fight against the will of the evil which is nearly impossible for everyone in town has walked through sin. I am writing about Young Goodman Brown because I am trying to show you how Hawthorne relies on the allegorical figures of Faith, the old man, and Goodman Brown to explain that everyone has evil within their own nature. Faith plays an important role that functions as an allegorical figure throughout Goodman Brown s diabolic journey. For example, at the beginning of the story, young Goodman Brown comes late to his meeting with the old man. As a result, he excused himself by stating Faith kept me back (Hawthorne pg. 387). Besides Faith being his wife s name, it is an allegory for religious faith. It is emphasized at the beginning of the story that this couple comes from a Puritan s society.
