George I was the first Hanoverian King of Great Britain, reigning from 1714 until his death in 1727. During his reign, the power of the monarchy diminished as Robert Walpole became Britain's first de facto Prime Minister, effectively controlling government. George was not well-liked and faced two Jacobite rebellions seeking to replace him with James Francis Edward Stuart. He was also implicated in the South Sea Bubble financial scandal of 1720 that ruined many investors. Walpole helped restore financial stability through debt restructuring and compensation.
