2. Origins
Rock and roll (often written as rock & roll or rock 'n' roll) is a genre of popular
music that originated and evolved in the United States during the late 1940s and
early 1950s, from African-American musical styles such as gospel, jazz, boogie
woogie, and rhythm and blues, with country.
The main instrument most associated with rock music is the electric guitar and
usually accompanied by other instruments such as electric bass guitar and drums.
3. History
The 1960’s were referred to as the ‘golden age’ of classic rock and a period where
the genre of rock developed into various other subgenres such as country rock
and folk rock. The 1960’s was also a time where the genre of rock developed and
expanded around the world in its popularity.
Back then, it was a very white male dominated music genre but has since become
much more diverse.
4. Key rock artists – Queen
Queen are one of the most iconic and famous rock bands ever and
were active during the 1970’s/1980’s. Along with Elvis, they are
credited with being one of the most influential artists in
revolutionising music as it was known and often used creative ideas in
their music videos including the infamous Bohemian Rhapsody Music
video where the quartet are singing up at the camera, one of the
most recognisable clips from a music video.
5. Other influential rock musicians
Other significant artists over the last few decades who have attracted
more followers to the genre of rock music are David Bowie, Elvis and Mick
Jagger. All the afore mentioned artists had a great influence in
progressively popularising Rock Music, most notably the song from Elvis
with ‘Jailhouse Rock’ from 1957 which attracted a great number of people
to get into Rock Music and discover and influence other future artists.
