Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United States
in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later,
particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s' and
1950s' rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by blues, rhythm and blues and country music.
Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as electric blues and folk,
and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.
Because rock is such a diverse genre there are many subgenres that sound similar to the
original but in my opinion the best rock artists include bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who,
Pink Floyd, The Doors, Queen and Fleetwood Mac.
Awards for rock music include the Grammy’s, MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video,
ARIA Award for Best Rock Album.
Rock music traditionally uses instruments such as guitars, bass guitars, drums, and
occasionally piano or brass bands. The vocals are normally loud and sometimes unclear for
example the Ramones and will almost always have a guitar solo or instrumental solo of
some sort.
The style of the clothes are normally dark and obscene for example torn denim jackets and
ripped jeans. But there are some artists that dress in bright colours, for example Jimi
Hendrix, and that relates to the “hippy” audience. Rock artists display attitudes that show
that they don’t really care and that they will do things the way they want it not really
following the rules and sometimes creating chaos for example Ozzy Osbourne biting thing
heads off bats on stage and Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at the end of the Monterey
music festival in 1967.
