2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. The masthead is bold which
immediately catches the
audiences attention. Also, the
masthead is effective as its bright
red. Whilst looking at other NME
magazines I noticed that the
masthead is always in the same
position but the colour may
change to suit the layout of the
magazine.
The magazine colour scheme works well as there is only four colours that have
been used – yellow, red, black and white. These colours complement each
other and is not too overpowering.
There are images that are bleeding
off the cover which shows who else
will be featuring in the magazine.
The slogan is placed
underneath the
masthead, which is
telling the audience what
NME stands for – New
Musical Express.
Pull quotes are used to
make the magazine seem
interesting and also give a
flavour of what the e
magazine will include.
This graphic is used to make
the magazine more
“glamorous”. It also hold
information about what will
be in the magazine. The
colours also match with the
colour scheme of the
magazine.
The cover image is the
main focus of the
magazine. This is because
the image is in black and
white and I find that black
and white is more
effective than the image
being in colour.
The bar code enables the shop owner to
scan the magazine so that the customer
can then pay for it.
The name of the artist who is on the cover is
bold and in red which catches the readers
attention. It is also placed on his chest which
so we know that the cover image is Jake
Bugg.
The subheading informs the audience what will be
in the magazine and it is also linked to the name
Jake Bugg. Also, the name Noel Gallagher has
nothing to do with Jake Bugg but it is highlighted
which shows that there will be something in the
magazine to do with Noel Gallagher.
3. The fonts are bold which catches the readers attention. The use of
colours also complement each other.
This whole row is categorised
so that the reader can read
the heading of each category
and see what the magazine
includes. By having headings,
it makes it easier for the
reading to turn to a certain
page.
The band index allows the
reader to turn to their
favourite artist on a certain
page.
A main image is used to
inform the reader that the
magazine will include a
certain band.
There is an introduction
to an article that is
linked to the image
above so that the
reader knows the text is
about the band above.
Also, the fact that the
article isn't all there
pulls the reader in to
turn to that page and
finish reading it.
The use of red breaks up
the dullness as black is used
a lot, however the colour
also links to the title NME as
well as other texts on the
contents page.
A graphic is used to make
the contents page seem a
bit more infesting.
This encourages the reader to subscribe to the
magazine and the images of the magazines shows
the reader what types of artists will be included.
This can attract a reader as the next magazine could
be their favourite artist.
4. The title is bold and which catches the readers attention. It is
also something witty which makes the reader want to read the
article.
A graphic box is used to
put some information in
about Jake Bugg.
The colours work
well together and
give the double
page spread a
“natural” feel to it.
The colours are
also minimal as
there is a lot going
on the double page
spread.
Images are used to attract the reader.
The picture of Jake Bugg on the left is
quite plain as there is a lot of writing
going on where as the image on the right
is not as plain.
Columns – The positioning of the
columns are quite compacted
and tight. This is because there is
a lot of writing going on
A pull quote is used to draw the reader into
the article. It is also bigger compared to the
other fonts and by reading it I can tell that
Jake Bugg is quite young.
