This document summarizes a presentation given by Dr. Barry Goodell on the future of the FPS organization. It discusses FPS membership declines since 1981 and weak financial position. 2. FPS MEMBERSHIP 1947 – 2011
Membership has declined since 1981 – coincident with a double-dip
recession – but recovery from recessions has never been adequate.

Throughout the process, feedback was sought through personal dialogue, meetings, the Shaping the Future Website,
LinkedIn discussion group, FPS eUpdate announcements, and discussion with leaders from within and outside FPS.

5. A NEW VISION AND MISSION
There is strong consensus that adoption of the new mission and vision will build a more
vibrant membership base. The new vision and mission continues FPS focus on traditional
forest products, but uses contemporary language to embrace new science and
technologies for the use of renewable cellulosic materials, while also capturing
business/industry interests and expansion into new area of cellulosic products and
energy.
VISION
To be the international leader for advancing
the sustainable use of renewable cellulosic
resources through science and technology.
MISSION
Contribute to global stewardship by
encouraging the social, economic, and
environmentally sustainable use of wood
and other renewable cellulosic materials.

6. STRATEGY
Implement the Mission and provide value to
members and partners by:
oLeading the international exchange of
scientific discoveries, innovation and technical
knowledge,
oFacilitating innovative and intelligent,
contemporary use of renewable materials
within architectural, engineering,
manufacturing, construction, and bioenergy
communities,
oEducating and shaping public opinion and
policy about renewable materials through
science-based knowledge,
oProviding services to build the scientific
knowledge base, ultimately resulting in
technological advancements for end-users.

8. BEYOND MISSION, VISION & STRATEGY
We wish to initiate discussion on the need for a New Name
for the Society to best reflect important themes in the proposed
Mission and Vision statements.
WHY?
FPS needs a new contemporary name, that
does not conjure images of “Lumberjacks”
or negative stereotypes.
The Board is committed to retaining the
“FPS” designation, but would like to explore
with members and non-members whether a
new name would better serve the Society
and help to revitalize the organization given:
1) The urgent need highlighted by the
weak financial condition of FPS, and
2) Our 30-year decline in membership to
less than ¼ of what FPS used to be.
