This document summarizes a chapter that models supercapacitors for use as an energy buffer in cyber-physical systems. It begins with background on supercapacitor construction and properties. It then introduces a three-branch equivalent circuit model to simulate supercapacitor behavior, accounting for energy losses. The model parameters can be measured from physical devices. Simulations using the model show that supercapacitor efficiency depends on power consumption levels, voltage levels, and supercapacitor size, with larger supercapacitors maintaining higher efficiency over a wider range of operating conditions. The model allows determining efficient operating regions for different supercapacitor sizes to realize their benefits over batteries for energy storage applications.
