3. INTRODUCTION OF GEAR
Gear is a round or cylindrical mechanical
component with teeth, used to transmit
power.
Gears are designed to mesh with one
another and can alter the speed, torque,
or direction of mechanical energy.
4. OBJECTIVES
1) Identify the types and design of gear.
2) Identify the functions and its applications.
3) The example of where each gear is used.
4) Understanding the types motion and speed
motion.
5) To exposed advantages and disadvantages
of gear drive.
5. TYPES OF GEAR
Spur Gear
Straight
Bevel Gear
Planetary

Helical GearWorm Gear
Herringbone

of Gear 1
Application
of Gear 2
6. Spur Gear
• Parallel and co-planer shafts
connected by gears are called spur
gears. The arrangement is called spur
gearing.
Function : Spur gears have straight teeth
and are parallel to the axis of
the wheel.
Application : Remote control.
Speed motion : Depends on the gear
diameter and the
number of teeth.
Advantages : They are compact and
easy to install.
Disadvantages : Spur gear drives are
costly when compared
to belt drives.
7. Straight Bevel Gear
• The teeth of straight bevel gear are curved
lengthwise.
Function : Can be used on shafts at any
angle, but right angle is the most
common.
Application : Hand drill, Machine tools,
printing press.
Speed Motion : Changing from horizontal to
vertical.
Advantages : Easy to manufacture.
Disadvantages : Need proper lubrication
system which involve high
cost.
8. Worm Gear
Function : Used to transmit power at 90° and
where high reductions are required.
Application : Music instruments such as guitar,
violin.
Speed motion : Same speed with different
direction.
Advantages : Quiet, vibration free and give a
smooth output.
Disadvantages : Misaligned gear mesh or lack of
lubrication will make noise and
vibration.
9. Planetary Gear
Function : Similarly to conventional transmission
gear.
Application : Gearbox.
Speed Motion : High speed.
Advantages : Compact machine train in
limited space.
Disadvantages : Need proper lubrication
system which involve high
cost.
10. Herringbone Gear
• Herringbone gears resemble two helical
gears that have been placed side by side.
Function : These gear generally functions on
non-intersecting parallel shafts.
Application : External gear pumps, heavy
industrial machine.
Speed Motion : High speed and smooth.
Advantages : Quiet and suitable for low-thrust
applications where heavier loads
are applied.
Disadvantages : High cost due to special gear
shaping equipment and special
cutting.
11. Helical Gear
• Helical gears have their teeth inclined to
the axis of the shafts in the form of a helix,
hence the name helical gears.
Function : Transmit power.
Application : Motor, blowers, conveyors.
Speed Motion : High speed and smoother
motion.
Advantages : Quieter and can take higher
loads than similarly sized spur
gears.
Disadvantages : Spare gear is costly and
proper replacement gear is
difficult to procure in many
cases.
13. Application of Gear

Guitar
Herringbone Gear

Machine
Helical Gear
Motor
14. CONCLUSION
At the end of this topic, we can
conclude that each type of gear has
similar function, which is to transmit
power from horizontal to vertical and
changing the speed motion of an
object. We also can learn about the
various types and designs of the
gear, the application of gears, the
advantages and disadvantages of
the gear.
