Meaning of silvicultural characteristics:
Silvicultural Characteristics refer to the different features of the trees including its tolerance,
sensitivity, nature of growth and survival.
Light, Frost, Drought, Fire, Coppice, Browsing, Nature of Treers, Soil type, Root
System, Associated Species are the silvicultural characteristics.

 Its local name is dabdabe.
 Garuga pinnata is a tree growing at elevations up to 1300 m. It is a deciduous tree
associated with Sal and Teak.
 Grows in slightly acidic soil.
 Trees are able to tolerate a moderate growth of grass and low weeds.
 Bark is greyish brown, exfoliating in large irregular fibres.
 Light: It is strong light demander.
 Frost: It is frost tender species.
 Drought: It is drought sensitive.
 Fire: It also resists fire too.
 Coppice: Coppices well and produces root suckers.
 Browsing: Young plants are liable to damage by browsing animals.
 Tree nature: It is medium sized deciduous tree with straight cylindrical bole.
 Soil PH: Best grow in acidic soil.
 Root system: Consists strong tap root system, which can withstand flooding.
 Associate species: Shorea robusta and Tectona grandis.
 It is used as timber for planking, canoes, boxes, drums, cabinet work and house
building.
 Used as fuelwood and gives charcoal of fair quality.
 Leaves and shoots are used as fodder.
 Drupes are eaten raw, cooked and pickled.
 Bark and leaf galls are used for tanning.
 Tree yields a greenish-yellow gum resin of no particular economic value.
 Its juice of the stem is used as remedy for the opacity of conjunctiva. Leaf juice along
with honey and other ingredients is given for asthma.
 Pulp is suitable for brown wrapping paper.
