English Name- Indian
Rosewood
Distribution:
• Common from Terai to 1000m.
• Terai, Bhabar and Duns
• Occurs in northern tropical most
mixed deciduous forest
1.Light It is a moderate light demander.
2.Frost It is frost sensitive, so shouldnot be planted where
regular frost occur.
3.Drought It is drought resistant.
4.Fire It is moderately fire hardy(once established it can
withstand annual ground fire,but killed by crown fire.
5.Coppice It coppices well and produces root suckers.
6.Browsing Leaves are palatable so seedlings are severely
damaged by browsing animals.
7.Tree nature It is a large deciduous tree.
8.Soil It grows best on well-drained, deep, moist, loamy soil.
9.Root system It has well developed deep tap roots.
10.Associates It is commonly found in Dalbergia sissoo forest.

Uses
1.Timber Heartwood is used for furniture, interior
boards, planks,carvings and cigar boxes.
2.Fuelwood It gives a good fuelwood.
3.Fodder Leaves are lopped for fodder. Leaves contain
about 15%crude protein.
4.Tannin Sulfur colored dye is extracted from the
flowers.
5.Ecological value Popular avenue tree is planted along
roadsides, canals and in gardens.
6.Medicinal value Bark is astringent and anti-periodic.
7.Paper and pulp Stem bark yields a cordage fibre.

Local Name: Lali Gurans
Distribution
It occurs between 1500m and 3300m
but is common above 2300m.

4.Fire It is fire resistant species.
5.Coppice It coppices well.
6.Browsing Leaves are unpalatable to browsing animals.

moderate sized tree.
8.Soil It thrives best on moist loam without lime.
9.Root system It has fibrous roots.
10.Associates It is common in western Himalayas and occurs in
association with Quercus incana, Lyonia ovalifolia
and Pinus roxburghii.
