Facilities
Requirements and planning
Warm Up Activity
• In your notebook list areas of pre-production that you would need
to consider for a games production
Learning Outcomes
• MUST be able explain the facilities required for
planning a games production.
• SHOULD be able to give examples of the types of
facilities you would require for your games
production.
• COULD distinguish differences between the types
of facilities required for different types of
production.
What is a facility?
“a place, or piece of equipment provided for a particular purpose”
In small groups- mind map and discuss
10 minutes
• What production/ post-production facilities
do you already have access to for your
FMP?
• What sort of planning would you need to do
for the production facilities for your FMP?
Production and Post-production Equipment
Here are some examples of the types of equipment you might need
for a games production:
• Motion capture software
• Sound production equipment
• Design software (Photoshop, 3Ds Max)
• Distribution authoring equipment
• Programming software (Unreal engine, Unity)
• Graphics tablets
• High specification computers and monitors
• Would different types of games companies require different
production facilities?
• If you didn’t plan out your post-production equipment properly
what sort of problems might you have? Why?
Office space
• Your production would need to take
place somewhere suitable, to house
all of your equipment and allow for
meetings with clients.
• Sometimes games companies book
out other facilities such as studio
space elsewhere if they don’t have
access to these at their own
production house.
• What sort of planning and liaising
with people would you need to do
to gain access to office space?
Outsourcing
• Outsourcing is when a part of the game
development process is sub contracted out to
another company.
• For instance a small games company might
outsource the programming of the game to a
larger company.
• Why do companies do this?
• What are the benefits and drawbacks of this?
Planning for availability
Use the Moodle Forum to discuss
• What sort of planning would you need to
do to ensure that facilities are available
during your FMP production?
• Who would you need to liaise with to
check availability?
• What considerations would you need to
make when using facilities abroad?
Follow the Moodle Lesson to learn about the
costs involved in facilities planning
TASK- Write about Facilities in your “professional
practice in the gaming industry report”
write about these areas:
• Your facilities planning for FMP/ for your type of game
• Office space
• Production equipment
• Manipulation of time
• Booking and planning availability
• Costs
• Outsourcing
English Target- Use the key terms and discuss costing of
facilities.
MUST be able explain the facilities
required for planning a games
production.
SHOULD be able to give examples of
the types of facilities you would
require for your games production.
COULD distinguish differences
between the types of facilities
required for different types of
production.
