3. WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?
Management is the process involving planning, organizing,
staffing, directing and controlling human efforts to achieve
stated objective in an organization.
To manage is to forecast and plan,
to organize, to command,
to co-ordinate and to control.
4. FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT
Henri Fayol was one of the theorist to define
functions of management in his book
“Administration Industrielle et Generale”.
Henri Fayol identified functions of
management which he labelled as:
Planning
Organizing
Staffing
Directing
Co-ordinating
Reporting
Budgeting
5. PLANNING:
Managers must plan for future conditions,
develop strategic objectives and secure the
achievement of future goals. Therefore,
managers must evaluate future contingencies
affecting the organization, and shape the future
operational and strategic landscape of the
company.
6. ORGANIZING:
Managers must organize the workforce in an
efficient manner and structure and align the
activities of the organization. Managers must
also train and recruit the right people for the
job, and always secure a sufficiently skilled and
educated workforce.
7. STAFFING:
The whole personnel function of bringing in
and training the staff and maintaining
favourable conditions of work:
• HR Planning
• Recruitment
• Selection
• Orientation
• Training and Development
• Performance Appraisal
• Transfer, Promotion, Demotion
• Separation, Termination, Retirement
8. DIRECTING
Continuous task of
making decision and
embodying them in
specific and general
orders and
instruction and
serving as the leader
of enterprise
9. CO-ORDINATING:
Managers must harmonize the
procedures and activities performed by
the company, meaning that every
activity of each organizational unit
should complement and enrich the
work of another.
10. REPORTING:
Reporting is keeping those to whom the executive is responsible
informed as to what is going on, which thus includes keeping himself
and his sub-ordinates informed through records, research and
inspections.
11. BUDGETING:
• Mean fiscal planning, control and
accounting
• Quantification of plans
• Financial planning
• Monitoring & controlling scarce
resources through performance
measurement
12. CONCLUSION:
The functions put forth by Henri Fayol may not entirely represent the complexities
encountered by the managers and the normative proposition is too stiff to illustrate
what functions the managers need to perform in the contemporary organizations.
Nonetheless, the functions illustrated by him present a structural overview of
several tasks needed to be performed by all managers. This gives managers an
initial overview of the main functions to focus on their everyday routine. Each of
these functions is about solving potential problems creatively. It begins with an
environmental analysis of the organization and ends with evaluating the results of
the solution that is implemented.
