This document discusses fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. FTTH involves running optical fiber directly from a telephone switch into a subscriber's home to provide high-speed internet, phone, and TV services. The advantages of FTTH include a passive network with no active components from the central office to end users, minimizing maintenance costs. FTTH also provides a future-proof network architecture capable of high-speed data and video. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, India's state-run telecom company, has plans to install FTTH networks in 98 cities by 2009 and make it available across all Indian states by 2015-2016.

4. What is FTTH?
• Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) is the installation
of optical fiber from a telephone switch
directly into the subscriber’s home.
• It is one of the latest access technologies.
• FTTH is also referred to as fiber-to-the-building
(FTTB).

• Broadband Internet/data access, with speeds in
excess of 10 Mbps to the subscriber, and if
required, speeds in excess of 100 Mbps to 1
Gbps.
• Enhanced video services supporting analog
and digital programming, interactive features,
Video on Demand, Pay per View and High
Definition TV.

(POTS) as well as next generation voice
services such as Voice over IP and IP
telephony.

• BSNL FTTH PLAN
• Phase-I (2008-09): In phase-I overlay
access network is planned in 98 cities
where the number of Direct Exchange
Lines are more than 3 lakhs i.e 30
millions, therefore Ethernet in the first
mile using the FTTB, FTTH is
proposed to be deployed.

• 7 lakh customers are targeting in the first year.
• By 2015-2016,will be installed in all states.

• It is a passive network. There are no active
components from the CO to the end user. This
minimizes the network maintenance cost and
requirements, as well as eliminating the need
for a DC power network.
• The FTTH network is a future-proof
architecture.

consumption.

learning, motion picture–quality
videoconferencing, and videophones is
expected to continuously increase. As a result,
demand for fiber technologies such as FTTH
are on the rise.
