Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. MASTHEAD.
Masthead- The masthead on the
front cover of a magazine always has
a unique font and is also always the
largest font on the whole page, this
makes the title of the magazine stand
out and make it more eye catching for
the audience to easily identify the
name of that magazine and what they
are looking for. This particular
masthead is a very basic but effective
one due to it having a very easily
recognisable font and the colour of
the letter ‘Q’ and the red background
work very well together and
complement each other to stand out.

3. MAIN IMAGE.
• Main image- The main image is a
medium shot of the subject
looking away from the camera to
express attitude through facial
expressions and sort of
incorporating the audience a bit
more through the use of facial
expressions. In this case the main
image has been put behind all text
and the main cover line has been
placed on the body of the subject,
however, no text at all has been
placed over the subjects face to
fully grab the attention off the
audience and to concentrate on
the expressions from the subject
and the attitude that is being
portrayed.
4. MAIN HEADLINE.
Main headline- The main
headline has been positioned
over the top of the subjects
chest, this is done to help the
audience realised that the cover
line that is attached to the main
image, is linked to the subject.
Gives the audience a clear
understanding of what the main
headline is about and who is
involved due to the main image
and the main headline being
heavily linked with each other,
visually and internally. (mojo)
5. BARCODE.
Barcode- Like most
magazines the barcode can
be found on the front cover,
on this magazine it has
been placed in the bottom
right hand corner. The
barcode is also usually
accompanied with the price
and the issue date. The
price has been made really
small as they want it to be
the last thing the audience.
This is because the price
could discourage/ put the
reader off from buying it.
6. SKYLINE.
Skyline- The skyline is
positioned at the top of the
page, above the masthead.
The band name, All Time
Low, has been put in a bold
font to stand out from the
rest of the skyline. This has
been done to first attract the
readers attention and then
entice them to read the
article. It gives the page
number for the reader to
turn to so they can continue

7. POSITIONING STATEMENT.
Positioning statement- The
positioning statement is
located at the very bottom
of the front cover. It is a list
of some of the bands and
artists that have been
featured in the magazine.
This shows the reader that
this magazine is full of
interesting articles,
tempting them to buy it.

8. COVER LINES.
Cover lines- Cover lines are used by
the publisher to give the audience a
kind of summary as to what is going
to be included within the magazine,
and a brief idea as to what the
readers are going to be indulging
into as they read the magazine.
Artist’s and band’s names will be
included In the cover line to grab
the attention of the audience once
more, and that they are also
highlighted to basically inform the
reader as to who the smaller article
is about and a very very short
introduction to the article. (q)
