The document discusses the planning and design choices for a magazine, including:
- Choosing a three-color scheme of hot pink, yellow, and grey for consistency.
- Including teasers, callouts, and buzzwords on the cover to link to interior content.
- Using the same fonts ("Georgia" for body text, "Broadway" for headings) throughout for continuity.
- Arranging elements like masthead, headlines, images, and text boxes on sample pages.
- Reflecting on the challenges of planning such as organizing photo shoots and choosing an appealing magazine name.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

2. Colour Scheme;
I have decided to use a colour scheme that contains three
colours. The reason I have chosen this number is because it
is conventional, professional and it looks the part. I will use
the colours hot pink, yellow and grey. These colours, I
believe, will give a good vibe to the magazine as they yellow
and pink will stand out on the grey and the grey will keep
things less chaotic on the magazine.
Here is a preview of the colours that I
have picked. They weren’t my only
choice as I also thought about: blue,
black, yellow and red, black, blue. But I
decided on the yellow and grey, for the
reasons above.

4. What I Will Include;
My front cover will have one single image to make
sure the audience know that it is important. The
image I use will portray the magazine. I will
however include ‘teasers’, ‘callouts’ and ‘buzz-
words’ so that the front cover and link and flow
nicely with the rest of the magazine. The master
head will be very dominant (probably the most
important thing on the page) – the next slide will
show some duplicates of what font it may be…
6. …
I got my masthead designs from the website
www.dafont.com I have decided to use this font for
my magazines master head;
I chose this one as I believe that it will stand out
and also it is quite different because of all of the
lines, so it will be easily noticed.
7. Modes of Address
For my magazine I want to write it in an informal
manner as I think that my target audience would
prefer a more chilled out magazine than
anything else, especially as they are mostly read
whilst travelling and on breaks in college or at
home. I shall also make sure I direct the
audience by using words such as ‘you’ so that
they feel a part of the magazine and important –
hopefully making them want to buy the
magazine again.
8.
9. Contents Page;
I will be using the same colour scheme – hot
pink, yellow and grey for my contents page
so that the magazine is the same throughout.
I will however write the body copy in black,
as it will be easier for the audience to read.
Again there is another image of
the colours I will use.

11. Which Fronts Will I Use;
For the body copy of the contents page I shall use the
font I am using now ‘Georgia’ because it is easy to
read but it isn’t a boring font either. If I mention the
name of the magazine I will use the font for the
masthead which is, . For the headlines I
shall still use ‘Georgia’ however, I will CAPITALISE
all of the letters (to meet conventions) and I shall
also use the effect of bold so that it stands out much
more. Then for the heading I will use the same font
I’m using for the headings of this, which is
‘Broadway’. I think that ‘Georgia’ and ‘Broadway’ are
well suited together and that the fonts work nicely
with one another.
13. Colour Scheme;
Again I will use the same colour scheme as I wanted
to use the same colour scheme all the way through
the magazine so that the audience can tell it’s the
same magazine and that it isn’t mismatched or
anything. And I shall also have the body copy in the
colour black, again for the same reasons, so that the
audience are able to read the magazine easily. Also it
is a typical convention of magazines and if I’m
looking at a mainstream audience I need to ensure
that I follow as many conventions as possible. Here,
again, is a picture of the colours I shall use; (hot
pink, yellow and grey)

15. Which Fonts Will I Use;
I shall use the same fonts as I am using
throughout the magazine. So I will use
‘Georgia’ for the body copy of the text. I will
also continue to use the same font for the
heading as I did on the contents page which
will be ‘Broadway’ I feel that this is a strong
font for the headings whilst at the same time
being quite fun.
16. Reflection
Overall I found that the planning task did take a lot of organisation
skills. For deciding the fonts/colours/modes of address that I would
use, I needed to plan ahead so that I could ensure that I was doing the
planning for my magazine as well as I could as all of this determines
how my magazine will actually turn out. The hardest thing I found
was organising the photo shoot because not everybody could do the
same dates which ended up it being a very last minute thing on the
Saturday (when originally I planned for the photo shoot to be finished
by the Friday) I feel that with picking the name for the magazine that
was hard as you have to chose a name that you think that the
audience will agree with, which can be difficult – I went from
thinking should I just use one singular letter like ‘M’ (representing
both the words music or/and magazine) or do I use an oxymoron like
‘Bitter Sweet’ and just one word like ‘echo’ or ‘loud’. You have to be
fairly decisive whilst planning a magazine because otherwise you
could spend forever on it. I feel that all of the outfits that had been
worn in my shoots were very stereotypical for the genre of ‘trendie. I
also think that they would be likely to be in a mainstream magazine
like ‘NME’ or ‘Q’.
