A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

I decided to use the oxen crossbow font with the name Cosplay HQ as I thought
it was easy to read but also had a futuristic sort of look that my existing cosplay
products seemed to have. I wanted to make certain that I liked how the font
looked on my website so that I changes some of the example text I had into the
font. Luckily I thought that the font worked well and so I decided that I would
use this font for my products. I could use the font for the titles I’ll have on my
pages and on the navigation pages. Since it will probably be different to the
font for my main text content, it will be good for drawing attention to each part
of my websites and on the heading of my magazine.

3. Style sheet
When it came to making my magazine font cover, it came to my attention
that I would probably have to widen the types of fonts that I used. It would
mean I could use them to draw attention to certain aspects more easily. I
thought that adding in the new font to draw the attention to the cosplayer of
the month was a good idea but it would need to reflect the costume of the
cosplayer. And since the cosplay I’m using is of Red Riding Hood, I wanted to
use a font in a woodland style. I found two fonts that I thought would work
well on the cover, the ‘wood god’ font ( left ) and the ‘wild wood’ font ( right
). While I thought that the wood god font was nice as it was simple, I decided
that the wild wood font worked best, especially with the colour scheme I
used for the cover.
4. Style sheet
I tried out a lot of different colour schemes
because I wasn’t sure which style would
look best. I tried out the different ones with
one of the background pages of my website
to see which ones still made the text
readable but wasn’t just a plain white.
Some of the brighter colours I felt were too
harsh and it made the text difficult to read
and changing the colour of the text didn’t
help much either. The colour schemes with
several colours didn’t look right either since
a lot of the page involves images and the
colours being too bright I thought it would
distract from the photographs. I then tried
looking at lighter versions of the existing
colours I had tried. Eventually I found a pale
blue-green colour that didn’t distract from
any images or font colours but that also
wasn’t just plain white that I thought would
be a good background colour.

able to get to the page they want to look at without having to go to the home page each

Most pictures will have the cosplayer not looking at the

them after is to bring them all into photoshop and use
the lomo effect and colour balancing for all images and

Foxwood Park is the place I’ve chosen for one of my photo shoots as I thought would be
good for the Borderlands photographs. Since I don’t have anywhere I could easily get to
that resembles a typical Borderlands scene. So I decided that a forest would look quite
effective as it is local and can look remote. However, there is still the option to edit it to
make it look like the Borderlands art style with colour corrections and using art filters to
create a cel-shaded effect.

For my other photoshoots, I decided to do two at the same time to mean that I didn’t
have to come back on a different date when the weather might not be appropriate. With
the Scarlet Witch photos, I was a bit more ranged with my options since she appears in
various situations throughout the movies. With Tracer, recreating the maps that a player
can play on would be difficult, but the woods would a good place for colour balancing
and it would be mostly uninterrupted by other people.

25. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Memory stick is lost or stolen. Have back ups in different places, e.g. on the
Mac and my computer at home.
Camera is dropped/broken. Be careful with the camera and don’t risk
breaking it.
The battery runs out of the camera. Make sure the battery is fully charged before
using.
The memory card is damaged/full and doesn’t
store pictures/video.
Ensure it is functioning properly and not already
full of memory.
Weather means travelling to college isn’t
possible.
Try to complete work at home where possible.
Weather means can’t get to any out of college
location.
Try getting some different pictures or use a
green screen back at college.
26. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
Travel to a needed location isn’t possible. Find another way to get there or go another
day.
Friend(s) can’t make it See if someone else can help at short
notice/manage on my own/wait for them to be
available and do other work until then.
Out of college location is crowded of other
people.
Wait for them to move or come back later when
there is less people unless working around
them is possible.
Wobbly tripod so the footage is shaky of blurry. If it is noticed early then the footage can be
re-shot. If not then it will have to be filmed
again another time unless there is a way to sort
out the shots.
27. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Tree branches falling when in wooded area. Be aware of the trees and don’t go near areas
that don’t seem safe.
Eye strain. Take regular breaks and don’t look at the screen
too intensely.
Falling over and sustaining injury. Be careful when walking around, especially on
uneven ground.
Electrocution from broken electrical equipment. Don’t touch anything that appears faulty and
get help from a tutor or technician.
Personal safety on location Don’t go to remote areas alone and make sure
one or more people has a phone on them at all
times.
Heat stroke In the situation of exceptionally warm weather,
use sun cream and stay in shade where
possible.
Hypothermia Bring coats and other methods of keeping
warm and don’t stay out in the cold too long.
