The Roaring Twenties-
Content Standard: SS5H4 The student will describe U.S. involvement in World War I
and post-World War I America.
b. Describe the cultural developments and individual contributions in the 1920s of
the Jazz Age (Louis Armstrong), the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes),
baseball (Babe Ruth).
21st Century Learner Standards:
1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.
1.1.5 Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity,
and appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context.
3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge
and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess.
3.1.6 Use information and technology ethically and responsibly.
Goals:
Students will describe culture and cultural changes of the time.
Students will be able to identify individuals from the 1920s.
Objectives:
-Presentation of the 1920s
a. Include facts from the unit
b. Include event or person/people from the era
-Assessment of the 1920s
a. Must be able to identify Harlem Renaissance and Culture
b. Must be able to identify people of the era- Louis Armstrong, Babe Ruth, and
Langston Hughes.
Technology- Students will research events and/or people to create a presentation.
Ethical Citizenship: Students will understand the importance of citing information found
for use in the presentations.
Scenario: 5th grade students will learn about the importance of plagiarism and what it is
through a collaborative lesson with the social studies teachers and the media specialist.
5th grade is beginning a unit on The Roaring Twenties in which they will create a
presentation on either an event or person during the era. Before beginning the unit the
teachers and media specialist will work with the students to learn what plagiarism is and
how to prevent it when completing their presentations.

Resources used for Presentations:
Roaring Twenties notes and information-The Roaring Twenties
Technology Tools for Presentation-The Roaring Twenties Presentation
Students along with the teacher will come to the Learning Commons to work with the
media specialist to begin this unit. The media specialist will explain what plagiarism is
and why it is important to understand. Mrs. West will explain that plagiarism is the same
as stealing or cheating off someone. Any source that you use must be cited. Mrs. West
will show students how to use google docs within their google drive to copy and paste
information, for example the name of the article, author, where they found it and the
date so that it will be in one location for them while they are working on the
presentations. If they are looking at a website they will need to copy the link of the
website and add the date they found it on the google doc. Using google docs will allow
the students to have all the information they need in order to cite the references they
found.
Day 1: Students will come to the Learning Commons to learn about the new unit they
will be starting, The Roaring Twenties. As Mrs. Blankenship and Mrs. Templeton are
discussing with students some of the things they will be covering during this unit,
students are told that they will be creating a presentation over an event or person during
this era. For this presentation they will be using resources that have been provided for
them and any additional resources they find. Mrs. West will talk with the students about
citing the information they use and what plagiarism is. For the exit ticket students will
take a quiz to see how much they already know. Plagiarism Quizziz
Day 2: Students will return to the Learning Commons, Mrs. West will share a video
about plagiarism with the students and show them a checklist that they can use to make
sure they are citing everything the way they should. Students will have a chance to ask
any questions that they may have. Mrs. West along with Mrs. Blankenship and Mrs.
Templeton will describe the project that the students will be completing. Mrs. West will
share with students the technology tools that they can use to create their presentation.
Day 3: Students will take the Quizziz quiz again to see how the results have changed
based off of what they have learned. Students will have the opportunity to research and
work on their projects.
Day 4 and Day 5: Students will continue to work on research and finalizing their
presentations.
Day 6: Students will share their presentations with the rest of the class.

Media Specialist: Rebecca West Collaborating Teachers: Alix Blankenship and Moira Templeton Grade Level: 5th The Roaring Twenties- Content Standard: SS5H4 The student will describe U.S. involvement in World War I and post-World War I America. b. Describe the cultural developments and individual contributions in the 1920s of the Jazz Age (Louis Armstrong), the Harlem Renaissance (Langston Hughes), baseball (Babe Ruth). 21st Century Learner Standards: 1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions. 1.1.5 Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, and appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. 3.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to organize and display knowledge and understanding in ways that others can view, use, and assess. 3.1.6 Use information and technology ethically and responsibly. Goals: Students will describe culture and cultural changes of the time. Students will be able to identify individuals from the 1920s. Objectives: -Presentation of the 1920s a. Include facts from the unit b. Include event or person/people from the era -Assessment of the 1920s a. Must be able to identify Harlem Renaissance and Culture
  • 2. b. Must be able to identify people of the era- Louis Armstrong, Babe Ruth, and Langston Hughes. Technology- Students will research events and/or people to create a presentation. Ethical Citizenship: Students will understand the importance of citing information found for use in the presentations. Scenario: 5th grade students will learn about the importance of plagiarism and what it is through a collaborative lesson with the social studies teachers and the media specialist. 5th grade is beginning a unit on The Roaring Twenties in which they will create a presentation on either an event or person during the era. Before beginning the unit the teachers and media specialist will work with the students to learn what plagiarism is and how to prevent it when completing their presentations. Resources on Plagiarism: Plagiarism Resources used for Presentations: Roaring Twenties notes and information-The Roaring Twenties Technology Tools for Presentation-The Roaring Twenties Presentation Students along with the teacher will come to the Learning Commons to work with the media specialist to begin this unit. The media specialist will explain what plagiarism is and why it is important to understand. Mrs. West will explain that plagiarism is the same as stealing or cheating off someone. Any source that you use must be cited. Mrs. West will show students how to use google docs within their google drive to copy and paste information, for example the name of the article, author, where they found it and the date so that it will be in one location for them while they are working on the presentations. If they are looking at a website they will need to copy the link of the website and add the date they found it on the google doc. Using google docs will allow the students to have all the information they need in order to cite the references they found. Day 1: Students will come to the Learning Commons to learn about the new unit they will be starting, The Roaring Twenties. As Mrs. Blankenship and Mrs. Templeton are discussing with students some of the things they will be covering during this unit, students are told that they will be creating a presentation over an event or person during this era. For this presentation they will be using resources that have been provided for them and any additional resources they find. Mrs. West will talk with the students about citing the information they use and what plagiarism is. For the exit ticket students will take a quiz to see how much they already know. Plagiarism Quizziz

Day 2: Students will return to the Learning Commons, Mrs. West will share a video about plagiarism with the students and show them a checklist that they can use to make sure they are citing everything the way they should. Students will have a chance to ask any questions that they may have. Mrs. West along with Mrs. Blankenship and Mrs. Templeton will describe the project that the students will be completing. Mrs. West will share with students the technology tools that they can use to create their presentation. Day 3: Students will take the Quizziz quiz again to see how the results have changed based off of what they have learned. Students will have the opportunity to research and work on their projects. Day 4 and Day 5: Students will continue to work on research and finalizing their presentations. Day 6: Students will share their presentations with the rest of the class.
