States of matter can be solids, liquids, or gases depending on how close or far apart the molecules are. Solids have molecules close together and do not change shape, liquids take the shape of their container but molecules are not as close as solids, and gases have molecules far apart like air. Matter can change states by freezing, melting, or heating which changes how close the molecules are.
