Fear Depicted In Steven Spielberg s Film Jaws
Swimming in the ocean on a beautiful beach, the sun shining, the water is the perfect temperature, you
have zero worries in the world. Until you feel a bump on your leg and notice someone on shore
screaming and pointing in your direction, duh dum. You bring yourself out of your reverie and notice a
very large fin protruding from the water moving towards you, duhh dumm. Your heart starts racing as
you frantically think of your chances of being able to swim away from this monster coming your
direction with increasing speed, duh dum dum dum dum. With simple notes of a tuba, John Williams
could amplify the fear portrayed in Steven Spielberg s movie Jaws (1975). These simple notes would

John Towner Williams was born in New York City on February 8, 1932. He acquired his love of music
from his father who was a musician in the city. His passion for music took a three year hiatus when
Williams was drafted in the U.S. Airforce in 1951, after which he returned to New York City to work
as a jazz pianist while attending the Julliard School of Music. It was during his studies in Julliard
where Williams decided to become a composer, humorously because he thought the competition for
concert pianists was too high. After graduating from Julliard he moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s
and began working as a movie studio musician. He worked as a pianist for a few years before given
the opportunity to start composing his own music: Gilligan s Island and Lost in Space were some he
had a part in composing. This was also around the same time that he started working with the big
screen movies as well. He received an Academy Award nomination for Valley of the Dolls (1967),
then went on to win an Academy Award for his music in Fiddler on the Roof (1972). This was when
things got interesting for Williams, the meeting and future collaboration with directors Steven

The Evolution Of Allergies On Homo Sapiens

The evolution of allergies in Homo sapiens
As of 2008, approximately 25% of people in the developed world suffer from allergic disorders (Galli,
Tsai, Piliponsky, 2008). These disorders can be mild, but they can also be severe. Hay fever, asthma,
eczema, and anaphylaxis are a few examples of what can be categorized as allergic disorders. The
morbidity rates among school aged children in the industrialized world is even higher than in the
general population with 40 50% of children susceptible to one or more type of allergy (Pawankar et
al., 2011). The pervasiveness of allergies worldwide has risen in the developed world for over 50
years. Many people take medication for their allergies but it can often take years to find a completely
effective regime, if ever. For some, allergic disorders can severely disrupt everyday life. With so many
suffering from allergies it is no surprise that this area of health has been thoroughly studied.
Interestingly enough though, while we do know what happens in the human body during an allergy
attack there is still debate as to why we as humans evolved allergic disorders in the first place.
On a biological level, when an allergen enters your system it triggers a Type 2 immune response
(Pulendran, Artis, 2012). Th2 cells and IgE antibodies control this type of immune response as
opposed to the Th1 and IgM, IgA and IgG used a Type 1 immune response (Palm, Rosenstein,
Medzhitov, 2012). Type 2 immune response is

Persuasive Speech On Tablets Vs Textbooks
In Colby High School, there have been recent studies whether the school should use tablets or
textbooks. In one instance, the teacher is up in front of the class teaching. Half the students are
absorbing the information and giving the teacher all of their attention. The other half just got a
notifications on a game. What choice will the students choose? Listening to the teacher talk about
plant cells or play minecraft. The urge to play a game is more likely of a high school student. A school
is a learning environment with the access to information on textbooks, not tablets. Therefore, Colby
High School should not change to tablets because they may cause students to behave badly, contribute
to injuries, and create a distraction. To begin, Colby High School should not use tablets because they
cause students to behave badly. Disrespect is not a quality or something a student should wish for in
life. Tablets make students feel as though they are higher up than their other classmates and even
teachers. Nearly ⅔ of teachers feel students comprehend and are more engaged when they use paper
and absorb more when they are on paper textbooks (Should tablets). Having a book in a student s hand
allows them to participate more in discussions and actively engages their minds in the subject manner.

The Works Of Rembrandt And Rubens
The Works of Rembrandt and Rubens
During the 17th century, especially after their break from Spain, The United Provinces of the
Netherlands became the most prosperous nation in Europe by leading the world in trade, science, and
art. Through the huge and one of the first art markets, art became a common household possession and
allowed artists to freely express themselves, which is one of the evidential factors in three of the most
universally admired artists of the baroque art era. Rubens, an influential Flemish artist of the Italian
baroque scene, focused more on the works of the counter reformation while the masters of the Dutch
baroque art, such as Rembrandt, were in the heart of the protestant Dutch Republic. These three artists
share similar artistic styles but yet have extremely evident differences and influences. The artists work
also have a great portrayal of the historical and social impacts of the 17th century.
This dynamic century shaped much of the modern world of today. With all the great scientific
discoveries and the recent protestant reformation, the world no longer revolved around religious
devotion and mysticism but had a stronger focus on individuality. The laws of nature and observation
by reasoning proved that everyone is capable of observing the world through mathematics, logic, and
experimentation. Another major characteristic of the 17th century is the major political decisions and
the international struggle for colonial domination. Colonialism was

Identity Theft And Its Impact On The State Of Florida
Identity theft is a negative issue in the entire United States, but the state of Florida is where it is most
common and where there is the most cases. Due to Florida having the most identity theft complaints, it
is important to question just how vulnerable the state is to this form of fraud. However, it is evident
that Florida needs to find more efficient ways to limit identity theft drastically, since it has led the
nation in identity theft for the past three years. This paper will examine the steps that are involved in
identity theft and the areas that are most negatively affected by this crime, in the state, In addition, this
paper will examine the best strategies that individuals can utilize to prevent identity theft and protect
their personal information, such as shredding paperwork that contain sensitive information before
throwing it away and not carrying a Social Security card with them. The paper will make the readers
understand how serious of a crime identity theft is and why it happens in Florida more often than any
other state in the United States.
Identity Theft: Florida Leads the Nation
Identity theft is when someone, without the consent of the owner, dishonestly uses, or intends to
fraudulently use another individual s personal identity. Personal identifying information can consist of

The Importance Of Bioscience In Everyday Life
The Importance of Bioscience in Everyday Life
Bioscience, also called biology and life science, is the study of living organisms, whether it is a
microorganism or a blue whale. The study and application of bioscience affect almost every aspect of
life from health, to agriculture and food to industry and energy. They are at the heart of many
innovations that result in products to cure diseases, create new fuels and ensure that people on Earth
have safe and abundant food and water. Entrepreneurs and scientists like Bruce Eaton have been
working with commercial applications of bioscience for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and
diagnostics.

using living and artificial materials for implantations.
Biochemistry studies the chemical reactions that are the basis of the life processes as well as the
substances that are found in living organisms. Its aim is to understand the behavior and structure of

Digitally Tracking and Monitoring People
We are being digitally tracked and monitored today more than ever before. In Minneapolis, a father
walked into Target and demanded to see the manager. He had discovered that her daughter had been
receiving coupons for baby clothes and cribs, and accused the manager at Target of encouraging his
daughter to get pregnant. A few days later the manager called to apologize, but it was the father who
apologized, as he had found out that his daughter was actually pregnant. Target, with the use of
prediction models, formulas and collected data from the girl s past purchases, knew that the girl was
pregnant before her own father did. Technology today is so advanced that everything we do is
collected by computers and processed.
Today stores have infrared cameras to watch your eyes and what you look at in the store, machines
pour coffee when they sense you yawning, and laser based scanners that can tell what you ate for
breakfast are being developed. These sorts of technologies are developed by companies mostly to
make better business decisions and by governments for surveillance, and are being implemented all
everywhere, including the University of Maryland Campus. The university police are using student s
phones as tools of surveillance for emergencies explained Captain Marc Limansky, former University

Adivasi In India
Adivasis are the indigenous population of India who predominantly depend on forests for their
livelihood and identity (references). India has the largest Adivasi (indigenous) population in the world
accounting to 104 million (8.2% of the national population), yet it took government of India nearly 60
years to acknowledge the historical relevance of forests for Adivasi communities through Forest
Rights Act,2006 (references). The disregard for Adivasi societies is sometimes reflective even on
community name assigned by the mainstream non Adivasis. For example, one of the tribal groups in
Kerala are known by the name Adiyas (ആദിമ root word which in Malayalam means slave).
Assigning such community names by the non Adivasis were some of the linguistic illustrations of
Adivasi subjugation and dominance (references). Adivasi are primarily forest dwellers, grazers,
agriculturists, laborers and reside mountain and hilly areas adjoining forest areas (references).
Contrary to the mainstream Hindu communities, Adivasi are egalitarian group however, they are
known to have strict gender roles and responsibilities. Women in Adivasi communities share accounts
of a mutualistic relationship with forests and natural resources developed through their material and
non material pursuits (references). However, colonial exploitation and historical alienation from
ancestral land has impacted the socio economic balance of the community with many of the human
development indicators spiraling downward

The Magna Carte, The Declaration Of Independence, And But...
Throughout out the history of the world many documents have had profound influences upon
humanity. The Magna Carte, The Declaration of Independence, and even the Communist Manifesto by
Karl Marx are examples of some of the documents that have helped to shape humanity. The Bible has
had perhaps more impact on humanity than any other Document ever written. Many people read the
Bible, but know little of the history of the Bible itself. The history of the Bible is a fascinating story of
the creation of the Bible versions seen today. Many people are familiar with at least some of the
contents of the Bible, but the average person knows little of the people, processes, and events involved
in its creation and translations.
The Bible is a collection of texts sacred to Jews and Christians. Judaism and Christianity may both use
the word Bible, however the texts included in their respective collections differ. The Bible canons of
other religions may contain other books. These books may sometimes have different divisions or
combinations. Other religious groups may include additional materials in their respective Bible canon.
The Bible is not a singluar work. In fact, many Bibles exist each with differing contents.
The history of the Bible begins with the Ten Commandments given to Moses. Some Years later God
gave Moses the written and oral Torah.
The Torah consists of the Pentateuch and the other twenty books of the Tanakh. The Tanakh contains

African American Contributions to American History
Many blacks contributed to the success of our country in every war that we as a people have ever
fought. In order to properly thank them for their heroic effort, I as a Hispanic Caucasian must give
credit where credit is due. In order to properly do so, I must begin with the contributions of Black
America beginning with the American Revolution and continue up until the World War II. Make no
mistake blacks made contributions well past World War II, but in the interest of time and accuracy I
must stay within the confines of our earlier history. One main aspect that should be analyzed is the fact
that no matter how hard the struggle, blacks have always overcome adversity no matter what the cost.
Of course, contributions made by blacks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some became the founders of the British colony of Sierra Leone in West Africa. Even though the
British offered slaves a better deal, many blacks served on the American side. They made up a
sizeable share of the men in the Continental navy, state navies and the large force of American
privateers. Blacks had long been in the labor force on ships and at seaports. On the water, then as now,
skill counted for more than politics. The precise role of blacks in the revolution is difficult to quantify.
Blacks in those days generally did not write. The people who did write early histories of the revolution
were whites and concentrated on the efforts of white men. Also, many participants in the revolution
were not specifically identified by race in the documents of the time and historians now have no way
of knowing whether they were black. When blacks were allowed to serve in the American military,
they often did work as laborers, sometimes in addition to regular soldier duties. Usually they were
privates, though a few rose to command small groups of men. The words of the Declaration of
Independence were taken literally by blacks and some whites. In, 1780, Pennsylvania became the first

X-Ray Powder Diffraction Patterns
X ray powder diffraction patterns of good quality were obtained for the samples using CuKα radiation
of wavelength 1.5406A0 at room temperature. The obtained X ray diffraction patterns confirmed the
formation of a single phase cubic spinel structure for the ferrite samples with a crystallite size ranging
from 25 34nm as reported earlier [16]. The X ray diffraction patterns were fitted using a Rietveld
refinement procedure as shown in Fig 2 [17,18]. The fitted patterns were observed for eight peaks
indexed by miller indices (220), (311), (222), (400), (422), (511) and (440), evident from the normal
XRD patterns as reported earlier [16]. From the Fig 2 it is observed that sharpness in the peak is
increased with an observed decrease in the width of the peak, which is the indication of the increase in
particle size of the ferrite with the increase in Indium content. From the Fig 2 it is evident that
observed patterns were exactly coinciding with the calculated values and the difference is very
negligible. In comparison with the normal XRD patterns Rietveld patterns have shown some extra
peaks of (331), (531), (422), (620), (533) and (622) which correspond to the second order impurity
phase. The intensities of the impurity peaks reflect that the percentage of the impurity is negligible.

group Fd3m with lattice parameter values ranging from 8.3106A0 to 8.3648A0. The values are in

Summary Of The Overcoat By Nikolai Gogol
In a time of large, corrupt, and ineffective bureaucracy, Nikolai Gogol looks provide a humorous
perspective on life in Tsarist Russia. Through both The Nose and The Overcoat, Gogol reveals his true
nature as a comical humorist with the intention of giving readers a laugh but also of mocking human
vanity. From the very beginning of The Overcoat, it becomes clear the story has a comedic nature.
While explaining to the reader the touchiness of departments in Russia, Gogol gives the district police
chief as an example: He plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs,
and that the Czar s sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complain a
romance, in which the district chief of police is made to appear about once in every ten pages, and
sometimes in a downright drunken condition (Gogol 1). The scenario Gogol describes is one of
absurdity. How could someone get so worked up over a book that has no intent of offending them? No
normal person would ever become so hysterical over a piece of literature that indirectly offends them.
Claiming that the whole political system of Russia is being destroyed and that royalty had been
disgraced because of a simple character in a book that resembles oneself is preposterous. To a rational
mind, the police chief s over emotional reaction is clearly insane, as a normal person does not have the
narcissism to take minute details personally. This laughable situation

Using Raw Data From Oil Fields
Problem Statement
We want to try and develop a material balance equation that tries to give an accurate estimate of the
original gas in place in a coalbed methane reservoir considering the absorbed gases, free gases, rock
compressibility and certain factors that have strong effect on the original gas in place.
Considering so many MBE equations that have been presented by different researchers, we are going
to be using raw data from oil fields to with researchers developed material balance equation to
calculate the OGIP in the reservoir and compare the results to various simulation results to see the
similarities and differences between them.
Methodology
We will be considering G.R king (1993) MBE and E. Firanda Material balance equations and doing
our calculations based on their developed equations. We would be comparing these results with the
result gotten from the finite difference simulator mentioned in king s paper so validate and see the
viability of applying this MBE s to actual reservoirs.
We used the parameters for a 6ft coalbed reservoir stated in kings (1993) and E. Firanda (2011) paper.

The relationship and interaction between XML and databases
ECET610 UMUC
Abstract
This paper will explore the relationship between XML and databases and the way that they can be
leveraged to provide data exchange on the internet. As XML gains popularity as the format for
exchanging information via the internet and has become the language of choice for use in database
development for Internet use.Introduction
XML is a universal data standard and thereby does not need to be translated for use in different
database systems. This is very important with large corporate data systems. In companies that have
web presence this is a vital concern where some of the data base systems are handled by external
companies that use an entirely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This presents a scalability problem in that when the system contains a few thousand documents the
performance tends to degrade and become a management issue. Synchronization is also a problem
between the non database code and the database. If changes are made to the database structure the
XML pointers need to be updated as well and the system is not very portable.
The XML mapping style of data storage is used by web sites that map user inputs into XML schema
that manages the storage and retrieval of the data as shown in the example Figure 1. This is an
effective method when the existing data is in XML format.
Using XML to simplify processes
The flexibility of XML has made it the standard for the formatting and sharing of data via the web.
XML data is easily transferable across machines and applications and is not constrained by the
operating system of the host machine. This ease of translation enables XML to be transformed into
non XML formats for use with databases and their associated applications.
An XML database is a database that stores the data fields in XML format. This allows for cross
platform transferability and web page presentation. A web application is typically done in three layers
the back office code in Java or a

It is said that most of the decisions that we make in our lifetime are made unconsciously. Whether we

have shaped who we are and how we look at the world today. These characters have impacted our

As a result, oftentimes young girls strongly identify with princess culture and even into adulthood we
not only blindly seek our own happily ever after but we assume that girls innately love princesses,
dress up, and anything magical, making children even more susceptible to gender stereotypes. Many
of the classic Disney movies spend a great portion of their screen time painting its leading female
character as a damsel in distress. This princess culture suggests that despite other defining
characteristics, a females most valuable asset is her beauty above all else. These Disney movies also
imply that girls should be sweet despite the lousy hand they were dealt.
Sleeping Beauty is indeed beautiful and sweet, but spends most her movie hiding, and as a result, ends
up waiting hand and foot on seven dwarfs who aren t always kind instead of fighting for her kingdom.
Cinderella was so set on getting away from her evil step mother that she swans off with a prince she
barely knows who was amazed by her beauty, with the assumption that freedom from the life she once

several times that Belle s appeal is not only her beauty but her intelligence as well. Yet despite how
smart she is, she falls in love with a Beast who held her hostage against her will. It is not until Ariel in

Lifestyle magazine are magazines that tells the audience about the lifestyle they live and can have an
impact on their lives as their views can be subverted by the ideology of the magazine. This ideology
comes from the creators of the magazine; they put what they think instead of what the public thinks
about a certain topic. In this writing i am going to talk about what the lifestyle magazines do in order
to attract specific audience and how they achieve in targeting specific audience.
The two lifestyle magazines that i am going to talk about are FHM and Cosmopolitan magazine.
These magazines were released on november 2013 and the target audience between the two has links
and oppositions. On both magazines, the central image is the image of females; which suggests that
these magazines are targeted at female. But, on the front of these magazines it is a picture of seductive
females which implies that the audience is different and possibly males as they would get attracted.
I am going to start by analysing how FHM targets their audience and keep their loyalty so that they
would not look for another magazine to replace the FHM magazine they currently hold. This magazine
is promoting anti feminism as the main central image is of a woman with a seductive look which is
representing woman in a negative manner. Also, further connotes objectification of woman as the
clothes signifiers shows

Emily Dickinson Syntax
Poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful that which is distorted. Percy Shelley, an English poet
(brainyquote.org). If anyone can make the distorted subject of death beautiful, it is Emily Dickinson.
One of America s greatest poets of all time, Dickinson makes depressing topics into works of art. Her
poem I heard a Fly buzz when I died is one of Dickinson s many poems that embraces the topic of
death. This poem describes the stillness of the atmosphere at the moment someone dies, but with an
interesting twist; a fly interrupts the solemn scene of people standing around the dying person. Just
when the moment seems calm and peaceful, the fly intrudes in the room as the speaker slips away.
Throughout the poem, Dickinson includes many details ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dickinson uses similes and onomatopoeia to present the two opposing subjects in the poem. For
example, lines two, three, and four of the first stanza contain a simile comparing the stillness of the
room to the stillness between a storm. Within the first stanza, it says The Stillness in the Room Was
like the Stillness in the Air Between the Heaves of Storm (Dickinson). By comparing the room to the
breaks between a storm, it creates in the poem a heavy and thick atmosphere, building tension as if
something was about to happen. In contrast, the use of onomatopoeia in the poem interrupts the
stillness of the room with a buzzing fly. In the first line of the fourth stanza it says, With Blue
uncertain stumbling Buzz (Dickinson), the word Buzz acting as onomatopoeia. Throughout the poem,
Dickinson uses similes and onomatopoeia to contrast two important parts of her

The Revolutionary War And The Declaration Of Independence
Decades following the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence, America continued to
face challenges in their young country. Tensions with the British, as well as Native Americans, led to
more struggles for America. The British failed to recognize the United States of America as a separate
and free country, and by enlisting the help of frustrated Native Americans they continued to be a sore
within America. They believed they had rights to some parts of land in western Florida, they joined
forces with Native Americans when Americans decide to move westward, and worst of all they
continued to impress Americans onto British ships because of problems with trade.
Tensions with the British continued to rise and a factor for the War of 1812 was the problem with
British West Florida. The War Hawks, who were a group of men who had a strong hatred towards the
British, were irate with the British over territorial issues. Among these men were John C. Calhoun and
Henry Clay, who brimmed with the cocky belligerence of youth and were super nationalists (Conlin
217). These men were wanting to conquer Canada, and the idea of doing so was not implausible.
Great Britain had an army in Canada, but it had slowly been reduced and Americans thought it would
be a perfect time to try and conquer the land. However, America unfortunately was not able to conquer
the lands in Canada, and the land remained the property of the British.
There were also territorial issues with western

Changes Between Civil War And Reconstruction In Indian...
Essay A 1 Although the horrors of the American Civil War and Reconstruction within Indian Territory
were fresh. Yet, the presence of Indian Territory changed drastically between 1865 and 1889, because
of the Second Trail of Tears , the unrest of the Southern Plains tribes of western Indian Territory, and
the impact of U.S. Polices on Indian Territory.
The Indian Nations lost nearly half their land due to the Reconstruction treaties of 1866, which
required the land lost to be used for resettlement of more Indian tribes. Indian populations within
Indian Territory did not change much from 1865 to 1900, but the non Indian populations soon
outnumbered the Indian populations six to one (Baird and Goble, p 126). Lane Pomeroy Plan pushed
by the Kansas representatives, James Lane and Samuel Pomeroy, to pressure the Federal government
to remove more Indians to Indian Territory (Baird and Goble, p 131). The Homesteading movement
increased pressure to relocate Indians to Indian Territory to open up more lands in surrounding states
for settlement. Upwards to 15,000 Indians were relocated to Indian Territory during the Second Trail
of Tears (Baird and Goble, p 131). The increased diversity between Indian tribes and the growing non
Indian population created a tension for Indians to maintain control of Indian Territory, which grew
worse as the territory edged closer to statehood.
The Second Trail of Tears, like the first, were done in a series of waves of forced and voluntary

Patient Safety Culture Analysis
The culture of patient safety is a multifaceted and multivariate variable in health care systems
management that is often misapprehended. A definition that is used for a culture of safety speaks to a
summary of organizational values views, capabilities, and thoughts that define how organizations
respond to health and safety issues in organization (Sammer, Lykens, Singh, Mains, Lackan, 2010).
My experience in patient safety working at the Mandeville Regional Hospital in Jamaica as a medical

precautions to safeguard the health and well being of patients and I have also observed other instances
where the safety of patients have been put at risk due

Functionalism Paradigm
Sociologists use the three major paradigms of sociology to define social problems considering that
they are complex in nature. Functionalism focuses on the entire social system and how well it is
unified. It deals with how society offset issues when problems occur, nevertheless other components
help to restore balance. On the contrary, Conflict Theory corresponds to functionalism due to the fact
that it targets the entire social system. Its only difference is conflict theory centers multiple groups
fighting to gain power, furthermore it just shows inequality. Symbolic Interactionism focal point are
how the interactions of individuals between people influence their behavior and how society is

The first step is choosing a topic, that is easily done by deciding what you need the answers to. The
next step would be to conduct a literature review or study to help assist in better researching the topic.
The literature review sustains other viewpoints from writers that can be evaluated for your research.
Thirdly you are to form a hypothesis to develop your theory, it establishes the evidence of events that
creates testable predictions. Collecting data is your fourth step to carry out, that fact is getting the
information together. Two types of studies that are being used are longitudinal studies, meaning using
the same group of individuals for data from observations over time. Focusing on a single event is
referred to as cross sectional studies, more so, surveys and field research is used to collect data too.
The fifth step is to analyse the results, this step requires understanding statistics thoroughly; so
interpreting data is seriously vital in this stage. Central tendacy are the numbers inside the group of
numbers, it has three measures including, the mean, median, and mode. Finally the last step for
completion is share and publish the results, the end result should reflect back on every step that was
done. The American Sociological Association style guide can be used as a guide since everyone is

Also, the author based the legend in the story off of a real sailor s tale. As previously stated, the legend
this uses features the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman, a name that people have used over and over
again. Although Jacques changed parts of the legend a bit to fit the series, it introduces the reader to a
whole new world of stories. Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth to the story, as it makes the
narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend before, but the first novel actually
made me want to learn more about that time period and the legends mariners would tell of the
mysteries of the sea. Known for his skill in writing the Redwall books, Brian Jacques carried this style
over into the Castaways series. He uses vivid figurative language, exquisite vocabulary, exceptional
dialogue techniques, and creates memorable characters all throughout the whole series. In The Angel s
Command, the very first sentence of the book reads, Great and golden, like an enormous, newly
minted doubloon, the Caribbean sun presided over the waterfront. From merely the first sentence, the
reader can see how amazing Jacques writes, using similes and excellent vocabulary. Yet he doesn t
write with words that no one can even read, let alone understand. Jacques does a fine job writing with
words that are the slightest bit complex that it increases the reader s vocabulary, yet they know what

Isotonic Point
Definitions and Preliminary Observations: Finding the Isotonic Point of Potato Cells In this lab we
will be doing an experiment to find the isotonic point of potato cells by placing potato cores in solutes
with varied and measured concentrations of urea. Other solutes will be tested by other groups
following the same procedure. We will track the change in weight by removing the cores and
weighing them at timed intervals.
In order to understand how and why we will be following this protocol, it will be necessary to go over
some definitions and processes that are foundational to this approach.
The plasma membrane is barrier between a cell and its surroundings, composed of a phospholipid
bilayer and various proteins. Phospholipids are amphipathic lipids with hydrophobic fatty acid tails,
and hydrophilic heads composed of glycerol, choline, and a phosphate group. When phospholipids
come into contact with water they form a bilayer with the hydrophilic heads in contact with the water,
and the hydrophobic tails together and kept separate from the water.
Selective permeability due to this bilayer and its various proteins regulates what can and cannot enter

Minimum Wage Should Be Increased

Minimum Wage Should Be Increased
Congress enacted the federal minimum wage in 1938, during the Great Depression. Congress had two
goals; keeping workers away from poverty and boosting consumer spending for economic recovery.
Today, there is a debate, whether we should increase the minimum wage again. Increasing the
minimum wage is useful for several reasons. First, the current minimum wage has failed to keep up
with inflation. Second, a higher income level reduces employee turnover and increases efficiency and
ultimately, raising the minimum wage does not reduce employment. Even with high unemployment
rates, the minimum wage is useful for the economy.
Today the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour since July 24, 2009. It has failed to keep up with
inflation. The real value of the minimum wage rose steadily from 1938 until its value reached a peak
in 1968. Thereafter, it suffered severe erosion as Congress failed to adjust for the inflation over time.
The minimum wage of $1.60 an hour in 1968 would be $10.47 today when adjusted for inflation. This
means that the purchasing power of the minimum wage has decreased significantly over time. The
current minimum wage is no longer enough to protect workers out of poverty. A person who earns the
minimum wage and works full time (40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year) only earns about $12,000 in a
year. This is almost $7,000 below the poverty line for a family of three ($19,090)

How Did Roman Music Influence Ancient Greek Culture
When a person hears Ancient Greece or Ancient Rome he probably envisions great military battles or
grand columns that adorn every structure. However, music, while not as equally honored as the
Colosseum, still deserves recognition for playing an integral part in citizens lives during ancient times.
While knowledge of ancient Greek and Roman music is limited to fragments of old music scores from
the era, literary references, and the actual remains of musical instruments, society will still benefit
from studying these rich ancient cultures. Obviously, music from both these civilizations are
extremely similar to each other in the role it plays in society and the instruments used due to the
influence of ancient Greece on Rome.

This high regard for music in life stemmed from Greek mythology itself. For example, Amphion
learned music from the Greek god Hermes and then with a golden lyre, he built Thebes by moving
stones into place with the sound of his playing. There also many references to indicate that music
played an important role in the Greek perception of how their race had come into existence and how
their destinies were controlled by the Gods. Other artistic forms, such as literature, praise music as
well: most of the known Greek poetry and dramas today were sung or accompanied by music in
ancient times. Professional musicians were well respected and people who achieved small
accomplishments in music were regarded as cultural and tasteful.

Ain T Language Analysis
The word ain t is one of the most commonly overlooked mistake in the English dictionary. It is used
very often in TV, books, movies, media, and music, so we shouldn t be surprised it is now in our real
life. Even though our English teachers and grammar books label the word ain t as incorrect the use of
the word has not been banished just yet.
One writer on the topic, Linda Eve Diamond, starts off her article by asking her audience is it true
what they say, that ain t ain t a word (or at least a proper one)? And if it is, why is it so unacceptable
now when in the eighteenth century it was just as respectable as any other contraction? (par 1). Some
individuals believe the person who studies and writes about grammar made a big mistake by banishing
the word. However, everyone knows that ain t is not proper. Diamond goes on to explain that,

To clarify the distinction, consider the expression ain t. Unless used intentionally to add colloquial
flavor, ain t is unacceptable because its use is considered nonstandard. (par 2). Colloquial tone is a

Nordquist goes on to mention, ain t is used by many speakers in certain fixed expressions and to
convey a certain rhetorical effect. (par 4). Using ain t can help persuade or influence some people.
However, Nordquist says, As linguistic scholars have frequently pointed out, it is unfortunate that ain t

Archetypes In Big Fish
Big Fish For many years, in novels and storytelling there has always been context that is not seen nor
heard, only implied; which plays an important role in the story being told. In the case of Big Fish ,
archetypal patterns can easily be applied and seen during the story being told. I am not normally a
believer of archetypes, or symbolism, but in the case of this movie I can clearly see that messages
were shown. To clarify, these points are based mainly off of the character Edward Bloom claims to be
through his stories, for we do not know which of these stories are true or false. The first big indication
that Edward s stories were, at the least, a little over exaggerated was when he said he grew at alarming
rates. This simply isn t real, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The spice works because it contains curcumin, an antibacterial and anti inflammatory agent. In

This is just one example of the many nuclear weapons in the world. Nuclear warfare is caused by a
military conflict or a political strategy in which one uses nuclear weaponry to inflict damage upon the
opponent. Some believe that politicians and military personnel only want to possess nuclear weapons
because of the heightened sense of power and feeling of security. It s scary to think that the human
race is in the hands of the people who own these weapons. The effects of nuclear use can be divided
into four categories: instantaneous, near immediate, short term, and long term. The heart of a nuclear
explosion reaches temperatures over a several million degree centigrade resulting in a heat flash over a
wide area that vaporizes all human tissue. At Hiroshima, within a radius of half a mile, the only
remains of most of the people caught in the open were their shadows burnt into stone. The near
immediate effects are the people inside buildings or otherwise shielded, will be indirectly killed by the
blast and heat effects as buildings collapse and all inflammable materials burst into flames. The
immediate death rate will be over 90%. Outside the area of total destruction will be survivors.

The Image of Medieval Western Europe Essay
The image of medieval western Europe can be attributed to political, religious, economic, and cultural
factors. The impulse of expansion, unity under Christianity, trade, and education were key
developments within the factors. Ultimetly, these developments contributed to the advancement of
medieval western Europe in the postclassical period.
The medieval government in western Europe exercised feudalism which also established the structure
of political powers. Kings held the most authority while lords and knights were above peasants. These
relationships were able to continue since government was local rather than centralized. Though the
government remained local in a majority of kingdoms, leaders wanted to expand their land. Wars

The Christian religion was incorporated into political matters. However, it was considered a separate
entity with power of its own.
The economy of Western Europe relied on differences between social classes for local agriculture and
international trade. Manorialism did institute a social system, but more importantly, it defined the
economic roles of a regional kingdom. Peasants cultivated land and paid rent while knights and lords
provided military service plus paid homage to the king. Though this system supported life in the early
Middle Ages, new agricultural improvements loosened ties between landlords and peasants. Despite
the change in peasant obligations to a landlord, agriculture remained vital in markets since its
production increased beyond local needs. The growth of urban areas led to specialized manufacturing
and other commercial activities such as trade. Also, another aspect of medieval European economic
activity was the guild. This gave people the opportunity to specialize in other jobs or crafts that
influenced trade productivity. As a result of trade, the use of money across long distance routes
introduced banks into western Europe. A large portion of medieval Europe s economic stability relied
upon agriculture and local and international trade.
The culture of Medieval Western Europe focused on education and logical reasoning with faith.

Definition Essay About Evil
Evil is the big bad wolf. It s the old witch offering a poisonous apple. At least that s how they tell our
bedtime stories. Parents tell their children about an evil force and the good that eventually overcomes
it. Children always like to cheer on the good and wish the bad away. A story s evil does bad things and
hurts people, there s no reason to not side against it. There s usually no problem distinguishing evil in
a story, but evil in our world gets messier. Some might call a thing someone did evil, but others don t
see it the same way. Everyone has a basic idea that evil is something bad, so where does it go from
there? To start off, evil should be classified as a concept. Evil at its outermost layer is just an abstract
idea. There is a definition, and some might say that the definition of evil changes from person to
person, but truthfully it s their perspective. The waitress of a restaurant may not see evil in something
that the boy next door does despite the fact that they do have the same definition of evil. They might

Jazz Music And The Musicians Essay
Jazz music and the musicians played a pivotal role in World War II. During the war there were a lot of
patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor, and religion written in the Jazz genre.
There were also numerous artists that went overseas to perform. One of these artists was Glen Miller,
who raised soldier s morale by modernizing the army band. Jazz was also used as a type of weapon in
the war. During the war there were a lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor,
and religion written in the jazz genre. A few patriotic songs are The House I Live In (That s America

written for a military show in 1918, but was put aside when they decided that they did not want to use
it for the show. It was later pulled out of storage in 1939 by Kate Smith. Kate s version of the song
became the standard version that was used by everyone. Another one of Iviring Berlin s songs that was
written for the military show but never used was This Is The Army, Mister Jones. This song was

  • 4. Fear Depicted In Steven Spielberg s Film Jaws Swimming in the ocean on a beautiful beach, the sun shining, the water is the perfect temperature, you have zero worries in the world. Until you feel a bump on your leg and notice someone on shore screaming and pointing in your direction, duh dum. You bring yourself out of your reverie and notice a very large fin protruding from the water moving towards you, duhh dumm. Your heart starts racing as you frantically think of your chances of being able to swim away from this monster coming your direction with increasing speed, duh dum dum dum dum. He acquired his love of music from his father who was a musician in the city. His passion for music took a three year hiatus when Williams was drafted in the U.S. Airforce in 1951, after which he returned to New York City to work as a jazz pianist while attending the Julliard School of Music. It was during his studies in Julliard where Williams decided to become a composer, humorously because he thought the competition for concert pianists was too high. After graduating from Julliard he moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and began working as a movie studio musician. He worked as a pianist for a few years before given the opportunity to start composing his own music: Gilligan s Island and Lost in Space were some he had a part in composing. This was also around the same time that he started working with the big screen movies as well. He received an Academy Award nomination for Valley of the Dolls (1967), then went on to win an Academy Award for his music in Fiddler on the Roof (1972). This was when things got interesting for Williams, the meeting and future collaboration with directors Steven Spielberg and George ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Evolution Of Allergies On Homo Sapiens Sarah Husted Anth 423 The evolution of allergies in Homo sapiens As of 2008, approximately 25% of people in the developed world suffer from allergic disorders (Galli, Tsai, Piliponsky, 2008). These disorders can be mild, but they can also be severe. Hay fever, asthma, eczema, and anaphylaxis are a few examples of what can be categorized as allergic disorders. The morbidity rates among school aged children in the industrialized world is even higher than in the general population with 40 50% of children susceptible to one or more type of allergy (Pawankar et al., 2011). The pervasiveness of allergies worldwide has risen in the developed world for over 50 years. Many people take medication for their allergies but it can often take years to find a completely effective regime, if ever. For some, allergic disorders can severely disrupt everyday life. With so many suffering from allergies it is no surprise that this area of health has been thoroughly studied. Interestingly enough though, while we do know what happens in the human body during an allergy attack there is still debate as to why we as humans evolved allergic disorders in the first place. On a biological level, when an allergen enters your system it triggers a Type 2 immune response (Pulendran, Artis, 2012). Th2 cells and IgE antibodies control this type of immune response as opposed to the Th1 and IgM, IgA and IgG used a Type 1 immune response (Palm, Rosenstein, Medzhitov, 2012). Type 2 immune response is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The other half just got a notifications on a game. What choice will the students choose? Listening to the teacher talk about plant cells or play minecraft. The urge to play a game is more likely of a high school student. A school is a learning environment with the access to information on textbooks, not tablets. Therefore, Colby High School should not change to tablets because they may cause students to behave badly, contribute to injuries, and create a distraction. To begin, Colby High School should not use tablets because they cause students to behave badly. Disrespect is not a quality or something a student should wish for in life. Tablets make students feel as though they are higher up than their other classmates and even teachers. Nearly ⅔ of teachers feel students comprehend and are more engaged when they use paper and absorb more when they are on paper textbooks (Should tablets). Having a book in a student s hand allows them to participate more in discussions and actively engages their minds in the subject manner. • 7. The Works Of Rembrandt And Rubens The Works of Rembrandt and Rubens During the 17th century, especially after their break from Spain, The United Provinces of the Netherlands became the most prosperous nation in Europe by leading the world in trade, science, and art. Through the huge and one of the first art markets, art became a common household possession and allowed artists to freely express themselves, which is one of the evidential factors in three of the most universally admired artists of the baroque art era. Rubens, an influential Flemish artist of the Italian baroque scene, focused more on the works of the counter reformation while the masters of the Dutch baroque art, such as Rembrandt, were in the heart of the protestant Dutch Republic. These three artists share similar artistic styles but yet have extremely evident differences and influences. The artists work also have a great portrayal of the historical and social impacts of the 17th century. This dynamic century shaped much of the modern world of today. With all the great scientific discoveries and the recent protestant reformation, the world no longer revolved around religious devotion and mysticism but had a stronger focus on individuality. The laws of nature and observation by reasoning proved that everyone is capable of observing the world through mathematics, logic, and experimentation. Another major characteristic of the 17th century is the major political decisions and the international struggle for colonial domination. Colonialism was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the water, then as now, skill counted for more than politics. The precise role of blacks in the revolution is difficult to quantify. Blacks in those days generally did not write. The people who did write early histories of the revolution were whites and concentrated on the efforts of white men. Also, many participants in the revolution were not specifically identified by race in the documents of the time and historians now have no way of knowing whether they were black. The obtained X ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of a single phase cubic spinel structure for the ferrite samples with a crystallite size ranging from 25 34nm as reported earlier [16]. The X ray diffraction patterns were fitted using a Rietveld refinement procedure as shown in Fig 2 [17,18]. The fitted patterns were observed for eight peaks indexed by miller indices (220), (311), (222), (400), (422), (511) and (440), evident from the normal XRD patterns as reported earlier [16]. From the Fig 2 it is observed that sharpness in the peak is increased with an observed decrease in the width of the peak, which is the indication of the increase in particle size of the ferrite with the increase in Indium content. From the Fig 2 it is evident that observed patterns were exactly coinciding with the calculated values and the difference is very negligible. In comparison with the normal XRD patterns Rietveld patterns have shown some extra peaks of (331), (531), (422), (620), (533) and (622) which correspond to the second order impurity phase. The intensities of the impurity peaks reflect that the percentage of the impurity is negligible. Through both The Nose and The Overcoat, Gogol reveals his true nature as a comical humorist with the intention of giving readers a laugh but also of mocking human vanity. From the very beginning of The Overcoat, it becomes clear the story has a comedic nature. While explaining to the reader the touchiness of departments in Russia, Gogol gives the district police chief as an example: He plainly demonstrated that all the imperial institutions were going to the dogs, and that the Czar s sacred name was being taken in vain; and in proof he appended to the complain a romance, in which the district chief of police is made to appear about once in every ten pages, and sometimes in a downright drunken condition (Gogol 1). The scenario Gogol describes is one of absurdity. How could someone get so worked up over a book that has no intent of offending them? No normal person would ever become so hysterical over a piece of literature that indirectly offends them. Claiming that the whole political system of Russia is being destroyed and that royalty had been disgraced because of a simple character in a book that resembles oneself is preposterous. The XML mapping style of data storage is used by web sites that map user inputs into XML schema that manages the storage and retrieval of the data as shown in the example Figure 1. This is an effective method when the existing data is in XML format. Using XML to simplify processes The flexibility of XML has made it the standard for the formatting and sharing of data via the web. This ease of translation enables XML to be transformed into non XML formats for use with databases and their associated applications. Tensions with the British, as well as Native Americans, led to more struggles for America. They believed they had rights to some parts of land in western Florida, they joined forces with Native Americans when Americans decide to move westward, and worst of all they continued to impress Americans onto British ships because of problems with trade. Yet, the presence of Indian Territory changed drastically between 1865 and 1889, because of the Second Trail of Tears , the unrest of the Southern Plains tribes of western Indian Territory, and the impact of U.S. Polices on Indian Territory. The Indian Nations lost nearly half their land due to the Reconstruction treaties of 1866, which required the land lost to be used for resettlement of more Indian tribes. Indian populations within Indian Territory did not change much from 1865 to 1900, but the non Indian populations soon outnumbered the Indian populations six to one (Baird and Goble, p 126). Lane Pomeroy Plan pushed by the Kansas representatives, James Lane and Samuel Pomeroy, to pressure the Federal government to remove more Indians to Indian Territory (Baird and Goble, p 131). The Homesteading movement increased pressure to relocate Indians to Indian Territory to open up more lands in surrounding states for settlement. Upwards to 15,000 Indians were relocated to Indian Territory during the Second Trail of Tears (Baird and Goble, p 131). Two types of studies that are being used are longitudinal studies, meaning using the same group of individuals for data from observations over time. Focusing on a single event is referred to as cross sectional studies, more so, surveys and field research is used to collect data too. The fifth step is to analyse the results, this step requires understanding statistics thoroughly; so interpreting data is seriously vital in this stage. Central tendacy are the numbers inside the group of numbers, it has three measures including, the mean, median, and mode. Finally the last step for completion is share and publish the results, the end result should reflect back on every step that was done. • 30. Lovers Of Fantasy A Series for All Lovers of Fantasy For centuries, humans have loved stories, particularly ones they can either relate to, or ones that are plain exciting. A story of adventure, mystery, and the honest against the malevolent... the book series The Castaways of the Flying Dutchman had all of this. Brian Jacques wrote the series, with the first book published in 2001 and the last one in 2006, spanning over a three book series. The first one is the one that named the series, the second book called The Angel s Command, and the author named the final installment The Voyage of Slaves. The series follows two characters, a boy named Ben and his dog, Ned, as they travel through the world on land and sea, facing diabolical people and plans. The two ... As previously stated, the legend this uses features the ghost ship The Flying Dutchman, a name that people have used over and over again. Although Jacques changed parts of the legend a bit to fit the series, it introduces the reader to a whole new world of stories. Adapting a legend adds a whole new depth to the story, as it makes the narrative so appealing. Personally, I had never heard of this legend before, but the first novel actually made me want to learn more about that time period and the legends mariners would tell of the mysteries of the sea. Known for his skill in writing the Redwall books, Brian Jacques carried this style over into the Castaways series. He uses vivid figurative language, exquisite vocabulary, exceptional dialogue techniques, and creates memorable characters all throughout the whole series. In The Angel s Command, the very first sentence of the book reads, Great and golden, like an enormous, newly minted doubloon, the Caribbean sun presided over the waterfront. From merely the first sentence, the reader can see how amazing Jacques writes, using similes and excellent vocabulary. Yet he doesn t write with words that no one can even read, let alone understand. Jacques does a fine job writing with words that are the slightest bit complex that it increases the reader s vocabulary, yet they know what they are reading. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Isotonic Point Definitions and Preliminary Observations: Finding the Isotonic Point of Potato Cells In this lab we will be doing an experiment to find the isotonic point of potato cells by placing potato cores in solutes with varied and measured concentrations of urea. Other solutes will be tested by other groups following the same procedure. We will track the change in weight by removing the cores and weighing them at timed intervals. In order to understand how and why we will be following this protocol, it will be necessary to go over some definitions and processes that are foundational to this approach. The plasma membrane is barrier between a cell and its surroundings, composed of a phospholipid bilayer and various proteins. Phospholipids are amphipathic lipids with hydrophobic fatty acid tails, and hydrophilic heads composed of glycerol, choline, and a phosphate group. When phospholipids come into contact with water they form a bilayer with the hydrophilic heads in contact with the water, and the hydrophobic tails together and kept separate from the water. Selective permeability due to this bilayer and its various proteins regulates what can and cannot enter cells. Some molecules need help to enter the cell, but many enter the cell through passive ... • 33. Minimum Wage Should Be Increased Rebecca Nevins Meredith Sides English 101 16 November 2015 Minimum Wage Should Be Increased Congress enacted the federal minimum wage in 1938, during the Great Depression. Congress had two goals; keeping workers away from poverty and boosting consumer spending for economic recovery. Today, there is a debate, whether we should increase the minimum wage again. Increasing the minimum wage is useful for several reasons. First, the current minimum wage has failed to keep up with inflation. Second, a higher income level reduces employee turnover and increases efficiency and ultimately, raising the minimum wage does not reduce employment. Even with high unemployment rates, the minimum wage is useful for the economy. Today the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour since July 24, 2009. It has failed to keep up with inflation. The real value of the minimum wage rose steadily from 1938 until its value reached a peak in 1968. Thereafter, it suffered severe erosion as Congress failed to adjust for the inflation over time. The minimum wage of $1.60 an hour in 1968 would be $10.47 today when adjusted for inflation. This means that the purchasing power of the minimum wage has decreased significantly over time. The current minimum wage is no longer enough to protect workers out of poverty. A person who earns the minimum wage and works full time (40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year) only earns about $12,000 in a year. This is almost $7,000 below the poverty line for a family of three ($19,090) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is used very often in TV, books, movies, media, and music, so we shouldn t be surprised it is now in our real life. And if it is, why is it so unacceptable now when in the eighteenth century it was just as respectable as any other contraction? (par 1). Some individuals believe the person who studies and writes about grammar made a big mistake by banishing the word. However, everyone knows that ain t is not proper. Archetypes In Big Fish Big Fish For many years, in novels and storytelling there has always been context that is not seen nor heard, only implied; which plays an important role in the story being told. In the case of Big Fish , archetypal patterns can easily be applied and seen during the story being told. I am not normally a believer of archetypes, or symbolism, but in the case of this movie I can clearly see that messages were shown. To clarify, these points are based mainly off of the character Edward Bloom claims to be through his stories, for we do not know which of these stories are true or false. The first big indication that Edward s stories were, at the least, a little over exaggerated was when he said he grew at alarming rates. This simply isn t real, ... Peasants cultivated land and paid rent while knights and lords provided military service plus paid homage to the king. Though this system supported life in the early Middle Ages, new agricultural improvements loosened ties between landlords and peasants. Despite the change in peasant obligations to a landlord, agriculture remained vital in markets since its production increased beyond local needs. The growth of urban areas led to specialized manufacturing and other commercial activities such as trade. Also, another aspect of medieval European economic activity was the guild.
