This essay will explicate a section of Beryl Satter s book Family Properties. This section argues that
the white population of Chicago took part in restrictive covenants or legally binding contracts that
prevented the sale of properties to colored people in an effort to confine Chicago s colored population
to specific sections in the city. The purpose of this paper is to explicate a section of Family Properties
through analysis of structure, tone, and imagery. It will then identify how the evidence relate to one
another, and possibilities of meaning. Lastly this essay will conclude with summarizing my results and
examining how using explication as a textual tool affects my approach to a reading. The selected
passage I chose to explicate is composed of two paragraphs from the second chapter of Family

The artist Louise Bourgeois was a French American who was born in Paris on December 25th, 1911,

Antibiotic Stewardship Antibiotics continue to be powerful weapons to fight infection, but
inappropriate use makes the treatment of microbial infections increasingly challenging. Successful
antibiotic stewardship can help mitigate the development of antimicrobial resistance and lead to better
outcomes (MLO, 2016). The first antibiotic introduced and produced in the United States was
penicillin in the 1940 s. From 1940 to 1960 more than 20 new classes of antibiotics were introduced,
and resistant strains developed within five years of each new class. Although the research for new
antibiotics has stalled, the use and distribution of antibiotics has increased (Smith, 2015). The Joint
Commission recently introduced a new Medicine Management standard to implement antibiotic
stewardship programs, stating that current scientific literature emphasizes the need to reduce the use of
inappropriate antimicrobials in all health care settings due to antimicrobial resistance (JCO, 2016).

Abstract (Kaley Barnes and Isabelle Cunis): Using an electric motor, an experiment was performed to
test the efficiency of the motor when the mass being lifted was increased in increments of ten grams.
As the mass increased by each increment of ten grams, the motor efficiency decreased by an average
of 7.439%. Our results were found by using the equation: efficiency=gain in potential

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of different masses hoisted by an electric
motor from ground level to a height of 1.29 m. The main purpose was to look how a change in mass
affected the efficiency of our motor, but it did affect other variables such as power, current, force, etc.
For this experiment, our hypnosis is that as mass increases, the efficiency increases. Because in the
equation for efficiency, efficiency=gain in potential differenceelectrical energy used, gain in potential
difference = mgh, the mass of an object has a direct relationship with the efficiency of the motor. In
this equation, we see that efficiency is affected by the mass that is lifted, gravity, the height the mass is
being lifted, and the amount of energy that is put into the system. We can see that mass, gravity, and
