How could Hollywood lie to me like that?! Films like Gladiator, Hercules and Pompeii all lead
me to believe that arenas contained things like animals, pits that warriors could fall into at
anytime, and even were able to house full armies fighting each other to the death, but instead the

helmets, armour and tunics. They would wear these things for protection because, contrary to the
movies, gladiators did not fight to the death. They were actually highly valuable for
entertainment, and cost a lot of money to train, so their lives mattered to the sponsors, therefore
it was rare that they were killed in combat. Finding out this information really has changed my

Jean Paul Sartre in his book Being and Nothingness provided us with a new interpretation of

She cut her hair and bought a men s jacket and trousers. She also wore her right arm in a sling to
hide the fact that she did not know how to write. The Crafts had several close calls along the
way, as neither could read or write. William Craft notes in his story, They are particularly
watchful in Baltimore to prevent slaves from escaping into Pennsylvania, which was a free state
. Somehow they got on that train and headed to the Happy State . On December 21, 1848 they
were able to board a steamship for Philadelphia, where they arrived on Christmas day. The Craft s
did not have it so easy and in 1850 the fugitive slave act was passed. They were threatened by
slave catchers in Boston and with the help of supporters they escaped to England. While in
England they were aided by English anti slave abolishers. They attended school there and were
taught to read and write. The Crafts also participated in many reform organizations and earned

established to abolish slavery. Some of the organizations were the London Emancipation

article. Mrs. Lipman gives good insight to tough teachers getting good results from their
students by using her experience with her music teacher Mr. Kupchynsky. She provides many
references to case studies performed on students in classrooms by doctors and graduate students
to support her point. Mrs. Lipman explains that her Mr. Kupchynsky was a strict teacher, but
because of his strictness when he passed away all of his past students that came to pay their
respects were all successful people in life some were doctors and lawyers. Mrs. Lipman then
continues to use her personal story to explain some of the conceptions of present day educators
and how they are false. She uses eleven ways to prove that today s educational system as become
soft on present day children. The fear, of course, is that failure will traumatize our kids, sapping
their self esteem. Wrong again. A 2006 study, a Bowling Green State University graduate student
followed 31 Ohio band students who were required to audition for placement and found that even
students who placed lowest did not decrease in their motivation and self esteem in the long term.
The study concluded that educators need not be as concerned about the negative effects of picking
