Spits, tombolos, and bars are coastal landforms created by the deposition of material through longshore drift. Spits project from the coastline into the sea, tombolos join mainland to islands, and bars connect two headlands and cut off a bay. They form in areas of reduced wave energy where deposited material builds up over time through the processes of longshore drift and deposition.
