Chapter 2 ( Part 1 ) - Nutrition
2.1 – The importance oftaking good nutrition & practising goodeating habits
The different classes of food shown in Photograph 2.1 contain different amounts of stored chemical energy.
The amount of chemical energy stored in food is called its calorific value.
Calorific value is usually measured in calories (cal) or kilocalories (kcal)
The calorific value of food is determined by measuring the amount of energy released when 1 g of the food is completely burnt.
An instrument which is commonly used to measure the calorific value of food is the bomb calorimeter shown in Photograph 2.2 and Figure 2.1.
Factors that Affect Our Calorie Requirementsdepend - physical activities
body size
age
sex
state of health
temperature of the surroundings
The body size of a person depends on the number of cells in the person's body. When the number of cells in the body increases, the body size gets bigger. As every body cell requires energy to function properly and stay alive, a person with a larger body size will have a higher calorie requirement.
Children and teenagers need more energy than adults.
This is because children and teenagers undergo rapid growth and have high metabolic rates.
When adults get older, they stop growing and their metabolic rates drop.
