What is forensic anthropology ?
 Forensic anthropologyis the application of anatomical science
of anthropologyand its various subfields.
 A forensicanthropologist can assist in the identificationof
deceasedindividuals whose remains are decomposed, burned,
mutilatedor otherwise unrecognizable.
History
 Today, forensic anthropology is a well established
discipline within the forensic field.
 Forensic anthropologists work in conjunction with
forensic pathologists to identify remains based on
their skeletal characteristics
 Exhumed bodies of victims of the 1995 Srebrenica
Genocide in a mass grave found in 2007.
 During the 194a0s, Krogman was the first anthropologist to actively
publicize anthropologists' potential forensic value.
Early
history
Growthof forensic
anthropology
Sub types
1. The growth of forensic anthropology
 The professionalization of the field began soon after, during the
1950s and 1960s.
Early history
 Thomas Dwight (1843-1911) is credited with being the father of
forensic anthropology in the United states.
 He was the first to write articles and essays and give lectures on
human skeleton identification ,the original designation of forensic
anthropology.
Methods
1) Determination of sex
2) Determination of stature
3) Determination of age
4) Determination of ancestry
Types of methods
How does this work?????
 Forensic anthropologists use regression equations to determine sex,
age ,stature, and race of skeletal remains.
 Regressions equations are mathematical equations developed from
studies of bones of individuals of known sex , age , race and stature
,and are used to predict such things of even fragmentary skeletal
remains.
Scope of forensic anthropology
1) The routine scope of this discipline is the identification of:
 Skeleton zed remains
 Badly decomposed cadaver
 Unidentified human remains
 Ageing of individuals
 Mass disaster and homicide victims
 Discrimination of commingled
Skeletons or bones
7.Modern uses
 Alternative light photography.
 High speed ballistics photography .
 Video spectral comparator 2000.
 Digital surveillance for xbox (XFT device).
 3d forensic facial reconstruction.
 DNA sequencer.
 Forensic carbon -14 dating.
 Link analysis software for forensic accountants.
 Magnetic finger printing and auto mated finger
print identification .(AFIS)
 Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma
mass specrometry(LA-ICP-MS).
Role of forensic anthropologist
 The role a forensic anthropologist plays in a death investigations
crucial to the field o forensic science as a whole .
 Forensic anthropologist understand the forms and variations of
various forms of skeletal properties , and apply their knowledge to
their work in order to obtain reasonable conclusions.
Forensic study used in solving murder cases
Determined cop who was the original investigator into the murder
of Krystal Beslanowitch 18 years ago in Utah helped bring
resolution to this case
The Disappearance of Sherri Miller and Pam Jackson, 1971
Death of Pamela Shelley, 2001
 Murder of Sara Lynn Wineski, 2005
Murder of Ranya Rison, 1993
The murders of three prostitutes, 1990
The murder of Anna Palmer, 1998
The Shooting Death of Roy McCaleb, 1985
The murder of Patricia Beard, 1987
