Introduction
01
OBSERVATION
It was first observed by Ampere in
1820 that two parallel straight
conductors carrying currents in the
same direction attract each other
and those carrying currents in the
opposite directions repel each
other.
CASES
02
CASE 1 :
when both current are in the same
direction
Let us consider two wires, wire (1) and wire (2) having current
Ia and Ib respectively.
The second wire (2) is placed in the magnetic field of the first
wire(1), therefore it will experience a force,
Force per
unit length
Similarly, Force on wire 1 due to wire 2 will be
Force per
unit length
CASE 2 :
when both current are in the opposite direction
Again, consider wire (1) and wire (2) having current Ia
and Ib respectively.
Force on wire 2 due to wire 1 :
d
Similarly, Force on wire 1 due to wire 2 :
THEREFORE,

AMPERE:
1 Ampere is that current
which when flows in
two parallel wires kept
at 1 m apart, produces a
force of attraction per
unit length between
them of 2 x 10^-7 N/m
Q : FIND net force per unit length on wire B.
