This document provides an overview of the principles of diffraction and how to use diffraction patterns to measure various properties. It begins by explaining what diffraction is and how it creates patterns of light and dark fringes. Examples are given of typical diffraction patterns produced by different objects like slits, wires, and gratings. The relationship between diffraction pattern minimums/maximums and properties of the obstructing object like thickness are also derived. Methods are described for using diffraction of laser light through slits, wires, or CD grooves to measure thickness or wavelength.
