The student proposes creating an educational animation about mental illness to help people understand and sympathize with those experiencing mental health issues. They plan to research specific illnesses and conduct interviews to accurately portray the experiences. The animation will be aimed at 14-16 year olds to educate them without being too sensitive. To evaluate the project, the student will compare it to similar works and consider audience and critical reception to identify areas for improvement in the future.

Project proposal title and date:
Educational Animation
Main area of activity:
Animation
Rationale: 150 words approx.
In the first year, I learnt basic pixel style animation and in my first year FMP I managed to make
speech in an animation look realistic to a decent standard. In the second year, I have improved a
lot. By starting to get to grasps with animation in After Effects I think I could use some of those new
skills in this project. I have also been improving my skills in Illustrator over the whole year which I
could use to make the project look more personal. I have also just learnt in my last project that I
enjoy working on pieces I would like to get taken more seriously. I also had practice writing a story
for my last year’s FMP where I got a distinction so I will be able to transfer my writing and planning
skills into this FMP but even better. I want the story of my piece to be similar to stories by Pixar but
with a totally different animation style something more like Adventure Time or the work of Masaaki
Yuasa.
Project Concept: 200 words approx.
I would like to create a serious and emotional animation that will help inform and educate people
on some types of mental illness. I would like to create an animation that will allow people without
these illnesses to still be able to sympathise with the characters and I want to educate them on
ways they can help etc. I also think that most people with these mental illnesses may find it hard to
cope alone and hopefully my animation will inspire people to speak out about their feelings or
current situation. I would like all viewers to learn something about mental illness’ and people with
these mental illness’ who watch to feel more comfortable as themselves. To make my project I will
need to not only research the target audience and existing products but also into the mental
illness’ I decide to use so I can get the correct representation. I could also conduct interviews with
people who have these certain mental illnesses with their permission or even people who
specialise in these areas. I would aim my product at 14-16 year olds. I have chosen this age
because I think it will be a good age to educate people on this subject and be able to talk about the
good and bad things whereas if I aimed it at years 4,5 and 6 I would have to make it more toned
down and be more sensitive when I’m creating my animation.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed: 150 words approx.
I will evaluate my project by comparing it to similar animations that have had different levels of
success. I would compare to some better and worse animations is so I can speak about how mine
could be improved and compare the context. I would also talk about strong points in my animation
compared to others and say why I think this works well. I will also evaluate the reception my
product gets or could theoretically get and speak about how I would change my project to get
better reception by the public and also my target audience. By doing this in my evaluation, in the
future I will know the specific places that I need to work on the achieve the best possible outcome
from my work. It will also allow myself and others to be critical about my work. I will also be doing
weekly diaries throughout my whole project and daily ones throughout my project where I will do
some evaluating and why I picked or changed certain areas.
