This evaluation form provides guidance for evaluating student projects at Level 3. It outlines sections for an evaluation including an overview of the project, research undertaken, development of ideas, outcomes, personal reflection, and critical evaluation. The student used the form to evaluate their animation project on mental health awareness. They faced challenges with their interview not providing desired answers and forgetting to include planned text. However, they were pleased to complete the project on time and felt it effectively conveyed its message about panic attacks.
2. Evaluation Overview
This evaluation form is designed to assist you in the evaluation of your projects.
When using this form, it is good practice to:
⢠Use appropriate terminology.
⢠Stay concise and focus on key points.
⢠Evaluate and analyse your statements.
⢠Focus on judgements about work rather than telling a story of how it was made.
Please find the grading matrix here to help you assess you are working at the right level.

3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
The theme of my project is mental health awareness, more specifically
anxiety and panic attacks, I chose this theme because it something that
close to my heart, I suffer from panic attacks as well and I felt there
needed to be more awareness for them as they effect a lot of the
population. My original idea was to make a basic video game, but I
soon realized that isnât feasible and decided to keep it as a concept and
make an animation for how the game would look, I originally had this
idea because there isnât a lot of videogames that talk about mental
health and even if there is theyâre not very mainstream or AAA games
and I felt I should help fill the gap.
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
For my research I started by looking at video games that talk about
mental health and animations, I found an animation by the BBC and a
game called when the darkness comes and the beginners guide. I chose
these as they related most to my topic and made similar elements to
what I wanted to create, like for example the use of colour in the
animation inspired me to use the different colours in the shapes I drew.
I was also going to use a bit of text like in when the darkness comes but
forgot to add it and then it realized it was too late to add it into the
animation as id gone too far forward in the animation to be able to edit
it. These products also gave me more insight into people's struggles
and into how they feel so they were good thing to review either way.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
Throughout my project I didnât really change a lot from the initial idea because I felt I had a
solid idea to work with, I did however have a few problems with the interview, I didnât get
the answers I wanted from who I interviewed which was fine and I managed to work around
it, it just set me back on bit on my initial idea, the issue was that the interviewee didnât have
any colours or shapes they related to their panic attacks which posed a problem as id said I
was going to personalize the colours and shapes to their words, I persevered through and
decided I would use the colours id initially come up with as they looked good and worked
together. I also had to change the characters design, originally the character had big eyes
with pupils and had a defined head shape, after trying to animate this I realized it wasnât
going to work and I opted for the simpler design you see in the final product. Another idea
that developed was the name, I spent quite a bit of time thinking of names, I went from
Mind to The panic project, I eventually decided on The Mind Project: Mind. Although I
managed it still make my project, I think had I developed my idea more and done more
research into how to do my original idea and looked into more people I could have
interviewed I wouldnât have had to reroute the project so much and it would have come out
as id actually wanted, looking back I really wish I'd done that I sort of left it and thought I
would get the answers I wanted no problem and when I didnât it threw me off a bit and
made me worry about how the project was going to go, so in the future I will definitely look
at all my options and pick the best one.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
My final product came out really good in my opinion, I got pretty much everything I
wanted done with it aside form the text and I think considering its the first time I've
heavily animated something it looks good. When it comes to the interview/voiceover
I'm not so happy with it, it sounds fine and I've pronounced everything right I just donât like
the way I sound, I recorded it around 3 times in order to get it right and I think it sounds ok,
again I just donât like the way I sound. I was given feedback from my peers one of them
said âI'd firstly like to clarify that I'm assuming your work was animation and not
audio-visual piece (I only mention this as I couldn't hear anything on the video link
you sent to me). I think your animation does well on the basis that it gives a clear and
readable message even without words. The use of the speech bubbles and other
symbols behind the stick person's back I thought was an emotionally-charged image,
something quite relatable to me at least, and does very well even without needing to
say anything. Also a good idea to include the helpline numbers at the end of the
piece. If I had to make one improvement to it, I'd maybe say I'd like to see it done in a
16:9 aspect ratio instead of the 4:6, but it's a very minor thing. It's very good.â Reading
this feedback, you can see that its overwhelmingly positive.
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
Before I stared the project, I felt really excited to start working, I had a
lot of ideas and was struggling to decide which one id use, I came to
settling on the idea id did because it was something I believed in and its
something I cared about I also knew I could do the topic justice and
create something that reached people and shed light on their issues.
Through all this I was nervous as I wasnât sure how in was going to go
about creating it as I initially wanted to make a game, I download
unreal engine and gave it once over, I had never made a game before
so it was inevitable that I would have to switch to a different media.
Other than that, though I was looking forward to what I had to do and
looking forward to animating the animation.
10. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
For my project development I used a mood board to get inspiration for the colours I was going to
use for the shapes, I looked at mainly abstract art that had lots of colour in it, I felt that abstract art
would be the best to study as it obviously has lots of colour and it can also have hidden meanings
like mental health behind them which ties them into my projects theme, I took inspiration from the
art as it had the same motive as my animation when it came to colour, I liked the way the art flowed
and implemented that in my animation. When I began thinking about my interview, I took what I'd
done from my experiment interview and used it in my actual interview, I took questioned I had
asked Tom and reworded them to fit my topic, I asked about my topic and the persons personal
experience with panic attacks, after doing the interview I wrote up a script of the answers in order
to organize them and refine them like for example the interview was done over text message and
was over multiple texts so I took what I felt what was most important and wrote it into the script, an
example of what I left out was about my friends allergies, I didnât feel it related to the message I was
saying so I decided to leave it out. I wrote a paragraph and then recorded me saying it around 3
times so I could get it right. My interview with tom went well and I got the answers I expected but
when it came to my actual interview it didnât go so well and I didnât get the answers I needed and
looking back I really should have asked more direct questions and I shouldnât have just taken the
answers I got, I also really should have asked around a bit more for people willing to do an interview
because as much I appreciate my friend doing it for me I should've had backups, it mainly my fault
anyway for not asking more people and the future I will definitely do that.
11. Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
For my interview I interviewed my friend who suffers from anxiety and
panic attacks as I felt they fit my topic well and I thought they would be
the most comfortable doing it, they answered the questioned I asked
really well, and I would absolutely interview them again. I didnât really
have any input from others other than my friends giving feedback
which didnât include any criticisms, I did have input from my tutor also
but that was just when I asked for help with certain things like the
adobe programs, we were using to create the products.
12. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
When I completed my project, I felt really relived as it had taken over 3
weeks of being in college to complete and nonstop animating, I did
enjoy doing it though, it was a good learning experience and I now
have the knowledge to do something similar in the future. I can use this
also in my portfolio for university which will be helpful. I was also glad
to have finished it because in the past I've always had to go over the
deadline and then I've been stressed but this time I finished earlier
than I expected which was good have done and really lowered mt
stress.
13. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
14. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
⢠Finishing the product itself, it was a big relief to have finished it as in the last projects I've done
I've never been able to finish it on time and that has caused my grade to suffer. I've learnt how to
manage work more; this was probably down to my production schedule that I had planned out,
sticking to it gave me the ability to finish on time.
⢠When I added everything together in Premiere Pro the whole animation became seamless and it
looked amazing, I was just so happy to see 3 weeks of work finally put together, I was worried it
might not flow as well because they were all separate animations, but it worked and looks good. I
didnât learn anything from this, but it was just a really good moment in the process of making the
project.
⢠Another good point in the process was when I started the initial animation, I started with the
walking cycle and slowly got to the point where I started adding the shapes, this was good
because I had started the process of strong and was going to continue at this pace and be finished
in time.
⢠The last thing that went well was including the helpline numbers and websites, this is because the
whole project is about raising awareness for panic attacks and the people who relate to it might
need a website to look at, for these reasons I felt it was important to add.
15. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
⢠The first thing that didnât go well was the interview, I didnât get what I wanted out of it, I got answers but not
specifically what I wanted, I know in hindsight I should have asked my questions more directly, but I was
afraid I was going to pry at my friend, and I didnât want to upset them. In the future I need to be more
honest and look past my fears otherwise I might miss something important or miss out on an opportunity.
⢠The next thing that went wrong was forgetting that I wanted to put text in the animation, I had a plan, there
was a certain point in the voice over where I say breathe and I was going to wait 3 seconds and have 1,2,3
appear in order on the screen, I didnât end up doing this because I realized to late that I needed to add it, I
couldnât add it because the way the animation was done was in way in which once it's done it couldnât be
edited or it would look weird. For next time I will definitely make sure that I have all the elements as I do
them, I will also have my storyboard in front of me.
⢠Another thing that didnât go as planned was doing the walk cycle for the animation, I had no idea how
animate someone walking coming into the project, so it was challenge learning how to do it. I ended up
following a tutorial I found on YouTube, https://youtu.be/nK-WQVcY7X8 this video allowed me to create the
basis of my animation and had also helped me skill wise, it was difficult to start with but I copied what was in
the video onto my iPad and made adjustments to make it fit my animation more like I didnât use as many
frames to make the character move. Now I've learnt how to do it I can implement it into future projects like
if I need a character to run, I can just use the cycle but exaggerate the limb movements and speed up the
frames per second of the animation.
16. What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
⢠The first thing that was negative was my interview. I interviewed my friend as
they seemed like the best person to ask about this topic, the problem was that I
didnât ask the right questions and then didnât ask what I wanted in case I was
prying at my friend, I know that mental health can be bad topic for some people
and I already felt bad asking in the first place, this is no fault of my interviewee
but my own, in the future I'm going to be more honest and ask for what I actually
want rather than trying not be rude and prying because in the future this might
actually effect my work and cause me to get in situations I donât want to be in.
⢠The next thing that didnât go as planned was not being able to add in the text I
wanted. Because I got carried with animating, I didnât think about my voiceover
and what would come when, my plan was to have a 3 second pause when I say
breathe in the voiceover and then have 1, 2, 3 appear in order in the animation,
because I didnât have the voiceover at that point, and I got carried away with
animating I forgot about it and only realized later that I hadnât added it in. In the
future I will try and be more organized and have things that are important to my
project when I actually need them rather than after.
17. What were the negative points about
the experience, and what could you have done
to improve them?
⢠The last thing that didnât go the way I wanted was the voiceover. I had
trouble being abele to say script, saying words wrong, skipping words
and taking accidental breaks, I ending up recording around 3 times,
all of them not sounding amazing, I ending up having to edit them to
make them sound good and even now the one that I have over my
animation I'm not happy with. I also had trouble adding it to my
animation, one day I had it and brought it in only to realize
it wasnât right and another time I had forgotten my headphones
and just had to wing putting it over my animation, which turned out
fine, but it was still a nuisance to have it deal with, in the
future I'm going to take more time to record things and make sure I
have enough time.
18. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
In my opinion I think my project is satisfactory, I think I could have
added more here and there to make it follow the story but again that
was my fault for not asking the right questions in my interview. I also
think I couldâve improved my voiceover, in my feedback that one thing
people have said it that the voiceover could be clearer, and I agree I
wasnât that happy with it in the first place. Despite all this I am proud of
what I've done, I've never animated something like this before and for a
first attempt I donât think its half bad, there definitely improvements to
made for the future but for my first go at it I'm proud of myself.
19. What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
I think there were a few successful elements, like for example the flow of the
animation is good and it all fits together well, the art I did looks god in my opinion,
and I think the content of the voiceover relates to what I was trying to say with the
animation, and it also gives good points and gets across its message. I also think
it's clear what the message is from watching the animation, someone is becoming
overwhelmed by something and at the end they walk away from it smiling, it's
clear it's about overcoming something. I think it was successful because it gets
across the message it needs and it sheds light on mental health and gives
awareness like I wanted it to.

20. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
I did an animation, so I tried to make it as animated as I could, I added things that
wouldnât usually be there like the shapes and colours in the background, also the
way the character walks, they start off walking and actually moving and then when
they get to about the centre they stop actually moving and move on the spot and
then the same when they leave, this is used a lot in animation to make it seem like
the character is moving but, they arenât. I also used elements id taken from the
animation I'd done research on, the one from the BBC about living with severe
anxiety. I was inspired by the use of colour in the animation, it used it in so many
ways like for example they used it differentiate the narrators, I didnât use this in
my project as I only interviewed one person, but had I interviewed multiple people
I would have definitely used this. One thing the colours used did inspire me to do
was add colour to my own animation, I had already had the idea to add use colours
and shapes etc but this solidified it as I saw how good it look, even though I
wouldnât be able to do it at the level of the video I still liked how it looked and
wanted to implement it somehow.
21. How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
I didnât really think about audience when I designed it, I just went off of
my concept and what I thought would look good, in hindsight I
probably should have done of its audience appeal and will take this into
account for the future, a lot of media is about appealing to an audience
so this will be an important factor to learn and keep up with. I think in
the future I will conduct surveys to get my research as they're most
effective ways of getting information quickly and they're easy for
people to do. I contemplated doing that this time but didnât feel it
necessary, I do regret not doing this as it may have hindered how my
project would've turned out.
22. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
23. In what ways was the overall project a
success?
⢠It was successful in the fact that it got across a point that matters and
should be talked about more especially in the media.
⢠It looks visually good, and the art is good looking.
⢠It flows well and keeps at a steady pace
⢠It talks about issues that need to addressed more
⢠It relates to my chosen topic
⢠I did a fair bit of research that contributed to my project
⢠The content itself is good and conveys what I wanted it to.
24. What elements did not go well and why?
⢠The voiceover isnât the best and is a bit choppy and unclear, this is
because I left it late to do it and I donât have the proper equipment to
be able to do a proper voiceover, I also kept messing up so its edited a
bit.
⢠I didnât get the answers I wanted from my interview but thatâs my
own fault because I didnât want to pry at my friend and make them
upset as talking about mental health can be distressing for some
people.
⢠Not adding in the 1, 2, 3 in the animation because I left it to late and
couldnât add it in without messing up the animation.
25. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
I developed my skills in animation a lot, before I could only do eyes
blinking or a circle appearing and disappearing, basic stuff but know I
can animate a walk cycle and that can translate into running a cycle etc.
I also developed my communication skills by doing interviews, my
experiment interview with Tom and my actual one, I can know
confidently do an interview and know what to ask and what not to ask.
I also improved my time management skills because in the past I've not
been good at keeping to deadline and have often gone over the time
we had but this time by keeping to my production schedule I was able
to get everything done in time. I was expecting to still be doing it in
evaluation week as I had no idea how the animation would go but
thankfully it when well and I was able to finish it.
26. What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
I wanted to get across the message that having panic attacks and
anxiety is a common thing, I wanted to shed light on it by showing
someone's struggles and how they cope with it and think I did that, and
I think I did it well, in my feedback my peers have said it has a clear
message and, in some cases, made them a bit emotional.
27. What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
Amazing animation, I really enjoyed it and it felt very immersive. To improve I would say the audio voiceover could be slightly clearer,
but other than that its great. â Shanice
So so good animation, very proud of you! Your drawings are done well, I really enjoyed it, very emotional when watching.
You did such a good job illustrating what anxiety is and panic attacks are. The only thing I would improve on is clearer/louder voiceover. - Dodoh
I like the concept of the video and I think doing a simpler animation gives a greater impact for the message. The random shapes are a good
way to show how your brain goes crazy when you are anxious and that they are larger than the character to make them look overpowering. I
would say that there could have been a couple more extra pieces of animation to go with the story and the wording could flow better in some
places, but I know it's hard to find the right wording. - Jack
I'd firstly like to clarify that I'm assuming your work was animation and not audio-visual piece (I only mention this as I couldn't hear anything
on the video link you sent to me). I think your animation does well on the basis that it gives a clear and readable message even without words.
The use of the speech bubbles and other symbols behind the stick person's back I thought was an emotionally-charged image, something
quite relatable to me at least, and does very well even without needing to say anything. Also a good idea to include the helpline numbers at
the end of the piece. If I had to make one improvement to it, I'd maybe say I'd like to see it done in a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of the 4:6, but
it's a very minor thing. It's very good. â Kieran
28. What would you do differently in the future
and why?
In the future I would like to have actually made it game because it think
the concept, I have for it is good and could really help people who
suffer from and want to understand mental health. I'd also like to have
made it more about the persons experience having a panic rather than
what they experience when they have one. I feel this could have made
for a better insight into the topic but either way I think it gets its point
across. Another thing I'd do differently is maybe get different peoples
experiences (interviewing more people) to make to it more diverse and
so more people can relate to it. I would definitely make the voiceover
better, I'm not happy with it, it's not as good as it could be in my
opinion.
29. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
Iâve definitely gained a knowledge in animation; I know more about the
topic and how to make animations , Iâve learnt how to make things
come to life pretty much, I know how to make someone walk, how to
make things appear and grow. I gained a bit more knowledge when it
comes to audio as I've had to edit my voiceover, it was a new thing for
me as I'm not at all experienced with audio and I think I'll be doing
more of it in the future as id lie to learn more about it. I didnât really
read into any professionals as I didnât feel I need to, I had already
gotten the information I needed from research, in the future I will
consider doing this though so I can further my knowledge in the topic.
30. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
31. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
In the future I would probably make sure my story its down, so I donât
miss things like I did in this project, the part I missed isnât massively
important, but it think it would have helped to flesh it out a lot more. I
would also make sure I know my medium before creating an idea, I
think I got too invested in the idea of making a game when I have no
idea how to make one, I felt like I had let people down when I realized I
couldnât do what id wanted as id hyped it up so much and people got
excited only for me to let them down so in the future, I will make sure
I'm well versed in my medium and know what I'm doing. Next time I
will also research more into people I can interview; my interviewee was
great and I have nothing against them I just think I should give myself
more options if something doesnât go how its supposed to.
32. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
For the future I will develop my skills in animation as I think I have a
good shot at doing well at it considering what I've done so far, to do
this I will watch tutorials on YouTube and look at a website called
Skillshare for help with certain parts of animating like a running cycle or
making someone shake hands. I also want to improve my drawing skills
as I donât think I'm there yet, Iâm not the best I can be at all aspects of
art so to improve I will use references from Pinterest and YouTube
tutorials, I may also reference art book if it feel it necessary. In the
future I want to make games so I think it would be appropriate for me
to begin to learn code, to do this I will again use Skillshare as it's been
advertised a lot and it seems to have the right courses I need to start
learning it.
33. What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
For my future job I think I need to work on my communication skills as when
I interviewed my friend, I didnât really say what I wanted and because of that
I didnât get the answers I wanted, I also at my current job am not the best
with communicating with people, I tend to say a lot at once and that makes
it confusing or I donât say enough, and they things go wrong, and an order
gets missed. To do this I will think about what I'm going to say before I say it
and I will also ask for things to be corrected when theyâre given to me wrong.
I also think I need to be more honest; I donât really like upsetting people and
telling them how it is, but I think that can do more harm than damage for
example with the interview, I didnât say what I wanted explicitly so I didnât
get my answer, another example is not asking for help when I wanted to
make my game, I couldâve asked if there was a way for me to still do it, I
might have been able to do it with assistance from my tutor.
