2. Process
My first production experiment
consisted of me attempting to make a
basic map tile in Piskel. I decided to
make a forest. I made the tile a
hexagon so that it could tessellate
with other map tiles creating a
“Settlers of Catan” style map and
allowing for the maps to potentially
be randomly generated yet still
detailed. I have included two images
one of which has a slightly different
colour scheme, this could also be
done randomly in the actual game.
The dirt path that I drew here looks
okay on it’s own however when the
map is put together it looks weird
having so many random paths. I think
I will remove this in my final design

3. Process
I continued my map idea by
making another hexagon based
tile in Piskel, this time a mountain
range, I did make a small mistake
with the size of the hexagon base
which became a problem later. I
fixed it in the second image and
will make sure I don’t make the
same error again. Although I
haven’t demonstrated this here I
could potentially flip the
mountain tiles to create some
variation. Also in the final product
each biome could have two or
more tiles such as a dense forest
and a sparse forest or mountains
and mountains edge.

4. Process
Here I demonstrated how the tiles
might fit together; the tiles closer to
the front of the map would be on
higher layers than those behind to
create a sense of depth. I did come
across several issues while doing this
however this was all based in my own
inexperience with the Piskel and not
designs. In putting the tiles together I
learnt a lot about how I should lay the
tiles out in the future. I think I should
do more stuff towards the edges of
the tile to help smooth out the
transition between them. The map
looks very repetitive at the moment
but with some variation it could look
significantly less repetitive in the final
product.

5. Process
I decided I would try my
hand at making a dense
boreal forest, although I
did try to keep it in the
style of everything else I
have done so far it quite
quickly proved difficult. The
thick lines don’t work well
with how slender the trees
are. I think that in the final
product I will do something
more like this art style.

6. Process
Finally I updated the
older tiles to be more
inline with the new
one. although I prefer
the look of the new
designs, to fit properly
the mountain and the
forest would probably
have to be fully
redesigned.

7. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
I will use the map idea for the map in my final
product. I will also use the knowledge gained
from the mistakes I have made and documented
to make sure that I make less mistakes in the
future
