RESTRICTING FLUID INTAKE
Fluid restriction means limiting
the amount of fluid a person is
consuming as a liquid or as a
solitary content of his solid and
semisolid food items.
INDICATIONS
Heart problems including congestive
heart failure
Kidney-related disease conditions
Adrenal gland disorder
SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate
antidiuretic hormone)
Corticosteroids therapy
Hyponatremia
SIGNS OF FLUID RETENTION
Swelling in
extremities
Jugular vein
distention
Weight gain
Increased urination
Limited activity
tolerance
Dyspnea
Anorexia
Hypertension
Palpitations
Dizziness, fatigue
Weakness and
confusion
FLUID RESTRICTION STRATEGIES
Use measuring cup for intake.
Strictly monitor and record intake and
output.
Follow low sodium diet.
Suck on hard candies.
Avoid juicy foods.
Ice cubes, ice and Freezy drinks are
recommended.
ENHANCING FLUID INTAKE
When net loss of body water exceeds input,
dehydration occurs.
Enhancing fluid intake includes replacing
increased insensible fluid losses, correcting
dehydration.
STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING FLUID
INTAKE
Water intake must be 2-4 liters per day.
Alternate caffeinated beverages by decaffeinated
beverages, caffeine act as diuretics.
Calorie free fruit flavored waters increases the intake
Use cube soda and diluted juices for flavored beverages in
minimum calories.
Eat water. (such as celery, curries, tomato, melons)
Carry water bottles. (BPA free)
Add citrus (limelemon)
Track water intake to stay motivated to consume required
