Fixed appliances are attached directly to teeth through banding or bonding. They are capable of producing a wide range of tooth movement compared to removable appliances. Fixed appliances can be used to correct mild to moderate skeletal issues, intrude/extrude teeth, correct rotations, reduce overbites and close open bites. Edward Angle developed early fixed appliances in the early 1900s using bands and wires. Modern fixed appliances include brackets, wires, tubes and auxiliaries. Accurate placement of brackets and bands is important for optimal tooth positioning and occlusion. A variety of arch wire materials have been developed including stainless steel, nickel-titanium, and fiber-reinforced composites.
